Shen Tong immediately pulled the kidnapped child to a safe spot, cradling him in his arms.
Hans Schulman still wanted to struggle, but his wrists were already pinned behind his back by Lin Mingchang, who let out a suppressed groan of pain.
"Hans Schulman, you are under arrest for kidnapping and imprisoning children, illegal drug injection, armed threats, and intent to harm minors," Lin Mingchang gasped as he skillfully cuffed Hans Schulman.
Shen Tong gently patted the child's back. "It's okay now, you're safe."
Although the child remained expressionless, Shen Tong could feel his breathing starting to stabilize; the stagnant energy around him began to flow slowly.
Meanwhile, backstage at the theater, Fang Zigui had already checked each child's pulse.
"This drug is quite malicious. It can paralyze the central nervous system and is mixed with some kind of hypnotic agent. If used long-term, it could cause permanent brain damage. Fortunately, these children have not been exposed for long; they should be able to recover."
He took out several small bottles from his medical kit and prepared the antidote.
"I need your help," Fang Zigui looked up at Ruan Xiaoshuang. "I need to inject first to slow down the blood flow before administering the antidote. Please hold the child gently so he doesn't panic when he wakes up suddenly."
Ruan Xiaoshuang nodded and leaned down to grasp the wrist of the first child as Fang Zigui instructed.
"Why did you choose to become a doctor?" Xiaoshuang suddenly asked.
Fang Zigui continued with the silver needle in hand, replying softly, "Partly because it's a family tradition; my ancestors have been doctors for generations. Also, given the current turbulent times, while my abilities may not be enough to save the country, I can at least do my part to heal and save people."
He glanced at Ruan Xiaoshuang. "What about you? Why did you choose to be a journalist and photographer?"
Xiaoshuang didn’t answer immediately; she focused on helping Fang Zigui with the injection before speaking up. "Because there are too many truths in this world that are ignored. I may not be able to change the world, but at least I can document the truth."
Upon hearing Xiaoshuang's response, they exchanged a smile.
At that moment, the first child who received the antidote gently moved his fingers and let out a faint groan.
Fang Zigui quickly stepped forward and gently held the child's hand. "Don't be afraid, child. I'm a doctor; you're safe now."
The child's gaze gradually focused as he looked at the unfamiliar face before him, his expression revealing clear fear and confusion—as if waking from a long nightmare.
Xiaoshuang softly held the child's other hand and said gently, "Brave little one, you did very well. You're okay now; soon you'll be able to go home and reunite with your parents."
While Fang Zigui continued caring for the other children, he couldn't help but glance at Ruan Xiaoshuang's profile, his eyes revealing a tenderness he himself was unaware of.
Less than twenty-four hours after Hans Schulman was arrested, Spring City Police Station welcomed an unexpected visitor. Lin Mingchang was organizing case files, archiving the last few witness statements when a hurried Little Officer rushed in.
"Officer Lin, please go to his office immediately."
As Lin Mingchang pushed open the door to the Police Chief's office, he sensed that the atmosphere was off. The Police Chief sat behind his desk, his face dark and stern, while two foreigners in suits sat across from him. One was tall, with his chin slightly raised and an expression that was all business; the other was short and stout, wearing gold-rimmed glasses and sporting a disingenuous smile on his face.
