In the dead of night, the four of them were feeling a bit tipsy. Shen Tong quickly tidied up the nearby guest room, allowing Lin Mingchang and Fang Zigui to rest for the night. Xiaoshuang followed Shen Tong into the main room, where they lay side by side on the bed. Xiaoshuang turned over and quietly asked, "Sister Tongtong, do you and Brother Lin have something going on?"
"What do you mean something going on?" Shen Tong feigned ignorance, giving her a playful glare.
"Stop pretending," Xiaoshuang laughed as she poked Shen Tong's arm. "During dinner, Brother Lin's eyes were practically glued to you."
Shen Tong quickly covered her mouth. "Don't say such things; we're just friends. But you, it seems like you and Zigui have a good rapport?"
Xiaoshuang giggled for a long time, covering her face. "Honestly, he's a nice guy; if only he could tell fewer corny jokes..."
The two laughed and teased for a while before Xiaoshuang soon fell into a deep sleep. Shen Tong lay in bed, wide awake. A year ago, she would never have imagined that she would have such a group of friends—people who did not fear her abilities or disdain her reclusiveness; they respected and cared for her, accompanying her uninvited like this.
After drifting through her thoughts for a long time, Shen Tong finally fell into a deep slumber.
In the middle of the night, she suddenly woke up, her Right Eye sensing strange fluctuations in the air from afar, rhythmic like some kind of melody. She furrowed her brow but quickly relaxed again. "Must be from drinking too much."
She turned over, trying to dismiss the strange sensation from her mind, closed her eyes, and fell back into a deep sleep.
On the first day of the New Year, just as dawn broke, Shen Tong snuggled in her warm blanket, reluctant to open her eyes. Last night they had stayed up late for New Year's Eve, drinking and chatting until the sound of firecrackers gradually faded before they returned to their rooms to sleep; everyone was still sound asleep now.
Just as she planned to doze off for a little longer, there came a sudden urgent knocking at the courtyard door.
"Officer Lin! Officer Lin! Are you there? Something happened!"
A young man's anxious voice came from outside. Shen Tong frowned as she threw on some clothes and opened the door just a crack, only to see Lin Mingchang rushing out from the guest room wrapped in an outer coat.
Xiaoshuang was also awakened by the noise; she poked her head out from under a thick quilt with sleepy eyes and asked, "Who is it? So early in the morning..."
"I don't know," Shen Tong replied softly as she put on her cotton jacket. "I'll go check."
"Who is it?" Lin Mingchang asked hoarsely as he pulled open the door latch.
Standing outside was a Little Officer who quickly saluted upon seeing Lin Mingchang. "Officer Lin! Something... something happened!"
"...Xiao Zhou?" Lin Mingchang squinted to recognize the visitor, clearly surprised to see his colleague from the Police Station at Shen Tong's house. "How did you know I was here?"
Xiao Zhou panted, speaking rapidly, "I went to your house first, but you weren't there. Brother Zhang told me that you might come last night..."
"Get to the point. What’s the emergency?" Lin Mingchang said impatiently, scratching his head.
"It's the owner of Han's Antique Shop, Han Mingshan. He died last night!" Xiao Zhou swallowed hard. "The circumstances of his death are particularly strange!"
"Han? How did he die?" Lin Mingchang frowned and glanced back at Shen Tong, who was approaching.
"It's hard to explain," Xiao Zhou said, swallowing again. "The scene was really bizarre. The Police Chief and Officer Li have both been there and said the case is very peculiar... The Police Chief sent me to ask you to come take a look."
Lin Mingchang clearly hesitated. "Me? Don't you know I'm on leave for reflection?"
