Shen Tong led Lin Mingchang and Xiaoshuang back to the counter of the shop. She pointed to a corner and said, "Here, there's a buildup of malevolent energy. It's not very strong, but it has an eerie feeling to it."
Lin Mingchang crouched down for a closer look and noticed a gap beneath the counter. He immediately called over two Little Officers to help him move the counter slightly, reaching in to pick something up.
Shen Tong, Xiaoshuang, and Fang Zigui gathered around to see what it was. They discovered a small piece of exquisite lacquered wood, adorned with intricate patterns and featuring irregular breakage along the edges. When Lin Mingchang turned the piece over, all four held their breath. Xiaoshuang couldn't help but gasp softly, "It's them again!"
On the back of the broken piece was a mark that was only half intact. Despite its incomplete state, all four recognized it at once—it was a Triple Spiral Pattern.
After leaving the scene, the four of them went to a nearby teahouse and chose a secluded corner by the window to sit down. Lin Mingchang summoned Xiao Zhou over and quietly instructed, "Go back and report the situation to the Police Chief. Remember, don't mention the case to anyone else for now to avoid causing panic."
Fang Zigui poured tea for everyone. As steam rose from the cups, he unusually took the initiative to speak first. "The paralyzing drug that obstructs blood flow found on the victim is very complex in its formulation and requires someone well-versed in ancient medical practices to create. If it's an organization like the Gui Xu Society, it's not surprising they might have some extraordinary individuals."
Seeing Shen Tong and Lin Mingchang deep in thought, Xiaoshuang cleared her throat and tentatively shared her thoughts. "Sister Tong mentioned that the victim's Death Qi had a distinct rhythm, like a musical beat. When I was taking photos of the wound earlier, I noticed that the arrangement of the wounds resembled musical notation... Could this be some ancient form of musical notation?"
"Have you all noticed?" Shen Tong cradled her teacup with both hands and squinted slightly. "The actions we've encountered from the Gui Xu Society seem to have a common thread—they're researching ways to influence people's hearts through different means."
Her words struck like a heavy stone thrown into a lake, causing the other three to suddenly realize this connection, sending chills down their spines.
Lin Mingchang spoke softly, "Shen Tong is right. In the Yongtai Photography Studio case, they added neurotoxins to the developing solution so that photos could induce hallucinations and manipulate wealthy individuals into transferring their inheritance."
"And in that Zhangqi Gu Chong incident," Fang Zigui interjected, "they attempted to create panic through an outbreak of plague, making it easier to control the populace."
"Now there's a murder method related to musical rhythm..." Ruan Xiaoshuang gently covered her mouth, feeling her hair stand on end.
Shen Tong nodded slightly. "Drugs, images, and now music. Each method used by the Gui Xu Society is more subtle and harder to detect than the last. I have this nagging feeling they're gradually perfecting some larger plan."
Lin Mingchang set his teacup down and pulled out his pocket watch to check the time. "We don't have much time left; we need to split up and investigate relevant clues. Let's reconvene at Shen Tong's house tonight. By the way, Zigui, you’ll handle that peculiar drug!"
Fang Zigui nodded as they all sipped their tea before dispersing.
Back at the Police Station, Lin Mingchang avoided unnecessary personnel and headed straight for the archives room. The duty officer, Old Li, merely nodded at him without asking questions.
Lin Mingchang skillfully navigated through rows of filing cabinets, searching for recent case files related to similar homicides. Soon enough, he found two cases marked as "General Burglary." Both victims were antique dealers who had died around midnight—one half a month ago and another one month ago.
Lin Mingchang spread out the files on the table and examined them closely under the light. The crime scene photos showed both victims had similar wounds resembling musical notes; however, these two victims had not used any coagulating anesthetics—there was a significant amount of blood at both scenes.
Why were these two cases simply classified as burglary?
