Shen Tong followed Lin Mingchang into the back of the clinic and immediately spotted Xiaoshuang there. She was sitting across from Fang Zigui at a table, with leftover dishes and bowls still scattered around.
"Hey, Xiaoshuang, I thought you were at Miss Li's wedding today? What are you doing here with Zigui?" Shen Tong asked as she took a seat next to Xiaoshuang.
Xiaoshuang's ears turned slightly red, and she absentmindedly twirled a strand of hair around her finger. "Oh, the wedding ended early. I... I heard some strange things and came over to talk to Zigui. It's just... I ended up having dinner here."
"Oh, just happened to drop by..." Shen Tong repeated meaningfully.
Fang Zigui cleared his throat awkwardly and approached with a teapot. "Lin Mingchang just mentioned he wanted to show me something?"
He poured tea for Shen Tong and Lin Mingchang, but his eyes kept drifting toward Xiaoshuang.
Lin Mingchang noticed the subtle atmosphere between them and exchanged a knowing glance with Shen Tong. It seemed these two had already developed a mutual understanding.
Lin Mingchang took out the Paper Man from his pocket and handed it to Fang Zigui, briefly explaining Zhang Jingzhai's suicide and Shen Tong's observations.
Fang Zigui set down the teapot and examined the Paper Man closely. He then held it to his nose and sniffed. "It has a faint but distinctive fragrance."
He stood up and walked over to the medicine cabinet, retrieving a small vial. He dropped a single drop of liquid onto the edge of the Paper Man, which instantly turned a pale purple and began to spread.
"What’s wrong?" Shen Tong asked, noticing Fang Zigui's expression grow serious.
"This Paper Man must have been soaked in a special potion," Fang Zigui said with a frown. "The ingredients in this potion... have a paralyzing effect on the mind."
"Wait!" Xiaoshuang suddenly sat up straight. "At the wedding banquet today, I overheard some ladies chatting in a corner about several prominent figures who recently committed suicide. They mentioned that all these individuals had attended Mo Wen's concert before returning home acting strangely, as if possessed... Could it be...?"
"Mo Wen?" Lin Mingchang's eyes lit up. "The Finance Director Zhang Jingzhai who jumped today had an invitation to Mo Wen's concert in his study!"
Shen Tong confirmed her suspicions, saying, "If this is related to Mo Wen, then it must also involve the Gui Xu Society."
Fang Zigui found a piece of white cloth and wrapped up the Paper Man. "The formula of the potion used on this Paper Man does indeed resemble Mo Wen's fragrance but is more potent and direct in its effects. Although it's already faded significantly, we should still be cautious; it's best not to touch it directly."
Lin Mingchang took the wrapped Paper Man and thanked Zigui before continuing, "Combining Shen Tong's observations about Controlling Qi with this potion, we can basically conclude that these suicides are man-made. Someone is using this Paper Man to control high-ranking officials into committing suicide?"
"Very likely," Shen Tong added. "This method is extremely insidious; if it truly is the Gui Xu Society behind this, their intentions are probably not limited to just these few lives."
In the following days, Lin Mingchang was busier than ever. He confirmed two more suicide cases at their scenes, both involving similar Paper Men, prompting him to request a joint investigation.
The three bizarre suicides began with the Tang Family Young Master hanging himself, followed by Chen Yuanfu drowning after jumping from the docks, and finally Zhang Jingzhai's mysterious fall from his building.
On the surface, the deceased appeared unrelated, but intuition told him there must be some connection among them that he had yet to uncover.
Shen Tong recognized that the paper used to make the Paper Man was high-quality funeral paper, so Lin Mingchang decided to approach the situation from these two angles.
