Lin Mingchang continued to flip through the pages, noting that "The Whisper of the Yellow Swan" was a special script used by the wizards and nobles of the State of Chu to convey secret messages, possessing some unusual power. However, as he progressed through the notes, the content became increasingly hurried, and the handwriting was less neat than before. It seemed that Zhou Zijun had written in a state of extreme excitement or tension.
When he reached the end, he discovered that several pages had been neatly torn out. "The last few pages are missing," he remarked.
Captain Lu squatted beside him, running his fingers along the edges of the torn paper. "These tears are very clean; they must have been cut with a small knife, not hastily ripped out."
Lin Mingchang found a pencil on the desk and gently rubbed it sideways over the last page, gradually revealing blurred text:
【Finally understood the 'Three People' mystery.】
【Heaven, Earth, and Man; none can be missing.】
【Together they live, apart they die.】
Beneath the text were a series of peculiar symbols, but due to shallow indentations, they could not be fully deciphered.
"'Three People' mystery?" Captain Lu looked at the lines in confusion. "What does that mean?"
"This 'Whisper of the Yellow Swan' and the 'Three People' mystery..." Lin Mingchang rubbed his temples. "We are not experts in this area and lack even basic background knowledge; it's hard to judge how it relates to the case..."
Shen Tong pondered for a moment before turning to Mrs. Zhou. "Madam, how many colleagues worked with Mr. Zhou?"
"Mainly Professors Wang Licheng and Yang Guangming," Mrs. Zhou replied. "The three of them formed a research group specifically responsible for interpreting and studying this batch of Chu Jian."
At that moment, both Lin Mingchang and Captain Lu realized the crux of the issue and exchanged appreciative glances towards Shen Tong. However, Shen Tong remained focused on her thoughts, completely unaware of their gaze.
She turned to Captain Lu and asked, "Captain Lu, could you arrange for us to meet with Mr. Zhou's two colleagues?"
After leaving the Zhou residence, Captain Lu started the car and said to Lin Mingchang and Shen Tong in the backseat, "Zhou Zijun worked at the Hubei Provincial Public Science Laboratory before his death. The director is Xu Wenyin, an old acquaintance of mine. Let's see if we can meet with the other two researchers."
About twenty minutes later, they arrived at the entrance of the Public Science Laboratory, a brick structure built in the early years of the Republic. In the reception area, an elderly man with reading glasses was perusing a newspaper.
After Captain Lu showed his credentials, the old man asked them to wait briefly before picking up an internal phone to contact the director's secretary. Soon after, a middle-aged man dressed in a dark blue long gown walked out briskly, smiling as he greeted Captain Lu. "Captain Lu, it's good to see you."
Captain Lu introduced him to Lin Mingchang and Shen Tong. "This is Secretary Huang, Director Xu's capable assistant."
Secretary Huang led the three of them through the hall and up the wooden staircase to the second floor.
On either side of the corridor were glass display cases showcasing various unearthed artifacts, primarily bronze wares, lacquerware, and jade products from the Chu state period.
"The Experimental Institute has been primarily responsible for organizing and researching the Chu artifacts unearthed from the Jianghan Plain in recent years," Secretary Huang explained as they walked. "Professor Zhou was our most senior expert on Chu Jian, and his passing has been a significant blow to our research efforts."
As they passed through the long corridor, Secretary Huang stopped in front of an intricately carved wooden door and gently knocked.
"Director, Captain Lu and his team have arrived."
"Please come in," came the voice of an elderly man from inside.
