Lin Mingchang opened the door to find a man in his fifties standing outside. The man had short gray hair and wore tortoiseshell round glasses, looking extremely anxious and fatigued.
"Excuse me, are you Mr. Lin?"
"And you are?" Lin Mingchang had a metaphorical guess in his mind.
"I am Yang Guangming, working with Zhou Zijun and Wang Licheng on the Chu Jian research." Yang Guangming glanced around the corridor, lowered his voice, and said, "I have urgent matters to discuss, matters of life and death."
In fact, Lin Mingchang had already guessed his identity at first sight. He immediately opened the door and invited Professor Yang inside.
Seeing Shen Tong also present, especially her right eye covered with an eye patch, Yang Guangming was momentarily taken aback. Shen Tong smiled and nodded before turning to brew tea.
After sitting down, Yang Guangming trembled as he accepted the teacup Shen Tong handed him.
"Thank you both for agreeing to meet me. In fact, I noticed you yesterday and quietly followed you to this inn, but there were police officers around you at the time. Out of caution, I didn’t reveal myself. I truly don’t know who to trust anymore..." he said with a bitter smile. "Two members of our trio are already dead; I feel like I’m the next target."
Lin Mingchang got straight to the point without any pleasantries. "Professor Yang, do you believe that the deaths of Zhou Zijun and Wang Licheng are related to your Chu Jian research? What exactly is The Whisper of the Yellow Swan?"
Yang Guangming took a sip of hot tea and began, "Zhou Zijun, Wang Licheng, and I each handled a part of the Chu Jian research, working together to decipher a type of secret script from the State of Chu known as The Whisper of the Yellow Swan. This script is rather sinister; it is said to contain techniques used by Chu sorcerers to manipulate people's hearts."
"So you mean someone murdered Zhou Zijun and Wang Licheng to obtain or conceal this technique?" Lin Mingchang pressed further.
"Exactly." Yang Guangming nodded heavily. "We’ve made significant discoveries in our research, but for safety reasons, we only know parts of it..." He paused. "Now I don’t trust the police; I don’t know who in the museum can be trusted either."
As he spoke, Yang Guangming took out a small wooden box from his pocket and pushed it toward Shen Tong. "You two are outsiders to this incident and have no vested interest in it. Also... while I may not understand fortune-telling or similar disciplines, I can tell that both of you are people of integrity. Inside this box is a key that can unlock the complete cipher. It’s not safe for me to keep it on me; I hope you will agree to take care of it!"
Shen Tong opened the wooden box to reveal a jade pendant with a warm luster, engraved with peculiar patterns that resembled characters but were not quite words.
"What is this...?"
"Keep it safe." Yang Guangming stood up. "I have other matters to attend to and must leave quickly. If I have time tomorrow, I will explain everything in detail."
Lin Mingchang urged Shen Tong to secure the jade pendant before standing up himself. "Professor Yang, let me see you back."
"No need," Yang Guangming shook his head. "If someone is following me, it could endanger you both; then this key wouldn’t be safe either."
With that, he firmly shook Lin Mingchang's hand without saying another word and turned to leave the inn.
As soon as Yang Guangming stepped out, Lin Mingchang followed closely behind him.
Before exiting, he told Shen Tong, "Shen Tong, stay at the inn. I'll follow Professor Yang discreetly to ensure his safety."
