Captain Lu sat weakly across from them, loosening his collar. "It seems the investigation into this case has come to an end. I was called in for a reprimand this morning, and the chief berated me thoroughly. He ordered me to close the case as soon as possible, labeling these three deaths as a 'Chain Suicide caused by Academic Pressure.' He also warned me not to interfere any further."
For a moment, the three of them were silent. Shen Tong spoke softly, "I really wish Zigui and Xiaoshuang were here."
No sooner had she finished speaking than a voice from outside the inn called out, "Mr. Lin, there are guests looking for you and Miss Shen downstairs."
Lin Mingchang and Shen Tong exchanged a glance, their expressions turning wary as they approached the door. Captain Lu also stood up, placing his hand on the gun at his waist.
"Guests? What kind of guests?" Lin Mingchang asked through the door.
"A man and a woman. The gentleman looks to be in his thirties, and the lady is in her twenties, carrying a camera..."
"A camera?"
Lin Mingchang suddenly flung open the door and rushed toward the stairs with Shen Tong almost simultaneously.
Captain Lu was momentarily taken aback but quickly followed suit.
Lin Mingchang and Shen Tong raced down the stairs, and in the inn's lobby, two familiar figures stood at the front desk.
"Zigui! Xiaoshuang!" Lin Mingchang exclaimed in surprise.
Ruan Xiaoshuang turned at the sound and immediately recognized Shen Tong running toward her. She rushed forward, exclaiming, "Sister Tong!"
She sprinted over with open arms and hugged Shen Tong tightly. For once, Shen Tong wore a genuinely happy smile as she gently patted Xiaoshuang's back.
Lin Mingchang strode over to Fang Zigui, laughing as he shook hands and embraced him.
Zigui quickly noticed the bandage on Lin Mingchang's arm and frowned. "What happened? How did you get hurt?"
"Oh! Just a minor injury! You two arrived just in time; it was almost like you timed it perfectly." Lin Mingchang waved his hand dismissively as he picked up Xiaoshuang's luggage and beckoned them upstairs to talk.
Once back in the room, Lin Mingchang first introduced Captain Lu to Zigui and Xiaoshuang before calling for an attendant to prepare two more rooms and brew a pot of good tea.
After everything was settled, they finally sat down to have a proper conversation.
Zigui took a few sips of tea, glancing at Captain Lu and then at Lin Mingchang's injury before diving straight into the topic. "Lin Mingchang, you mentioned that Xiaoshuang and I arrived just in time—what do you mean by that? Looking at your injury, does it mean you've encountered some case?"
Lin Mingchang nodded and began recounting Zhou Zijun's fall from height, Wang Licheng's drowning, and finally Yang Guangming's hanging suicide. He emphasized the common features among the three deceased: identical ear punctures, peculiar tattoos, and their shared research on The Whisper of the Yellow Swan.
Captain Lu concluded, "The Wuhan Police Station is now demanding we put this matter to rest by classifying it as suicide..."
Fang Zigui furrowed his brow and turned to Captain Lu. "Can I see those tattoos and punctures on the deceased?"
"Of course! Today is your last chance! Zhou Zijun's and Wang Licheng's bodies will be buried tomorrow." Captain Lu stood up abruptly but then paused as if remembering something. "Oh dear, you two just arrived; you must be tired. Would you like to... rest for a while first?"
"Rest?" Xiaoshuang exclaimed, her eyes wide. "At a time like this, who has the mind to rest!"
Fang Zigui also stood up. "The case won't wait for us. Captain Lu, let's go now."
A few hours later, under Captain Lu's discreet arrangements, the four were able to privately examine the three corpses in the Mortuary.
