In the mortuary, several electric lights cast flickering shadows on the walls. Fang Zigui donned a pair of cotton gloves and bent down to examine the first corpse.
“Xiaoshuang,” he called softly, pointing to the inner side of Zhou Zijun's left ear. “Can you take a shot here?”
Xiaoshuang nodded, adjusted the focus, and captured several close-ups of the ear's puncture marks.
Zigui turned to the other two bodies, methodically inspecting the deceased's ears. He gently pressed on the edges of the puncture marks in their left ear canals, his brow furrowing deeper with each examination.
“What’s wrong, Zigui? Did you find something?” Lin Mingchang leaned in to ask.
“These three puncture marks are in exactly the same position, and…” Fang Zigui looked up at Captain Lu and Lin Mingchang. “They are all precisely located at the same acupoint—Ear Heart Point.”
“Ear Heart Point?” Captain Lu frowned and asked, “What is that acupoint? Is there any significance?”
“In traditional Chinese medicine, there are many acupoints on the ear that correspond to various parts of the body. The Ear Heart Point is located at the edge of the ear canal,” Fang Zigui pointed to his own left ear. “This acupoint can directly influence mental state and cardiac function.”
Lin Mingchang immediately grasped the key point and pressed further, “Are you saying that this murderer might understand traditional Chinese medicine? Did they intentionally target this acupoint?”
Fang Zigui nodded. “It’s very likely some sort of special toxin was injected at this acupoint, which could instantly affect heart function and cause death while leaving the victim in a state of mental confusion. I need to take some blood samples back for research.”
As he spoke, he retrieved three small syringes from his bag and drew a small amount of blood from each of the three deceased individuals. Meanwhile, Xiaoshuang had completed photographing all the tattoo patterns on the bodies.
Captain Lu glanced at his watch and urged, “It’s about time; we need to hurry. If the chief finds out I’m still investigating this case privately, my time as captain will be over.”
The four quickly packed their things and quietly followed Captain Lu out through the back door of the mortuary. He dropped them off at the inn's entrance and whispered, “I have some matters to attend to. You all should study today’s findings thoroughly. If there’s any news, Lin Mingchang can call the police station and say he wants to treat me to a meal before leaving; I’ll come as soon as I can.”
With that, Captain Lu hurried away. The four had a simple lunch before returning to their rooms to get busy.
Fang Zigui locked himself in his room, carefully dropping blood samples onto porcelain dishes before retrieving several small bottles from his luggage. He added different reagents to each blood sample, observing their reactions. His desk was spread with several volumes of ancient medical texts, which he compared against his observations of the various drug reactions.
In the adjacent room, Xiaoshuang cleared out a corner that held a wall lamp.
With the help of Lin Mingchang and Shen Tong, a makeshift darkroom was set up using curtains and bed sheets. She quickly replaced the regular light bulb in the wall lamp with her red bulb for the darkroom and began developing the photographs.
Lin Mingchang and Shen Tong did not disturb Xiaoshuang; instead, they returned to Lin Mingchang's room to examine the jade pendant that Professor Yang Guangming had given them earlier. Lin Mingchang borrowed a magnifying glass from Xiaoshuang and carefully scrutinized every inch of the jade.
"The quality of this jade, to be honest, isn't particularly high," Lin Mingchang said, rubbing the surface of the jade with some confusion. "Moreover, it looks quite new, not at all like ancient jade excavated from a Warring States tomb. What could it possibly have to do with The Whisper of the Yellow Swan?"
