After the shadow ascended the stairs, Shen Tong quietly approached outside the building and blew into a bamboo bird whistle.
"Whoo—whoo—"
A few calls resembling that of an owl pierced the darkness, quickly fading into the night. The shadow showed no suspicion and soon arrived at the fourth floor's scripture repository, turning on a flashlight and heading straight for a row of ancient book shelves.
Hidden in the shadows, Lin Mingchang signaled to Captain Lu and Fang Zigui, and the three of them silently approached the shadow from different directions. Captain Lu and Lin Mingchang lunged at the same time, but the shadow seemed to sense something; it suddenly crouched low and swiftly sidestepped, evading their grasp just before being tackled, causing the flashlight to clatter to the ground.
The shadow moved with incredible speed, rolling away and drawing a dagger from its waist, turning to face the three who had surrounded it. It was then that Lin Mingchang and Captain Lu finally recognized the person before them—Xu Guangyao!
"Xu Guangyao, put down the knife! You are surrounded!" Captain Lu shouted in a deep voice, aiming his gun at Xu Guangyao's chest.
Xu Guangyao panted heavily, his previously refined demeanor vanished. His expression twisted into one of madness. Suddenly, disregarding everything, he swung the sharp knife and charged at Fang Zigui, who appeared to be the weakest.
Unbeknownst to him, Fang Zigui was no delicate scholar; he had been prepared. He deftly stepped aside to avoid the blade and quickly advanced, engaging Xu Guangyao in a struggle.
Seizing the opportunity, Lin Mingchang joined the fray, executing a perfect joint lock that firmly seized Xu Guangyao's wrist and brought him crashing down to the ground. Xu Guangyao let out a muffled groan as the dagger slipped from his grasp and skidded across the wooden floor.
Lin Mingchang swiftly rolled over him, pressing his knee against Xu Guangyao's back while twisting his arms behind him. Xu Guangyao attempted to resist, but Captain Lu moved in quickly and efficiently cuffed him.
"Xu Guangyao, you are under arrest for the murder of Professors Zhou Zijun, Wang Licheng, and Yang Guangming!"
At that moment, Shen Tong also arrived on the upper floor and reminded Zigui, "Zigui, check his mouth; we can't let him poison himself."
Zigui immediately crouched down to inspect Xu Guangyao's molars and under his tongue for any hidden poison. Just as he confirmed there was nothing wrong and prepared to stand up, his gaze inadvertently swept across Xu Guangyao's torn collar, causing his pupils to constrict suddenly.
"What is this..." Fang Zigui's voice faltered as he looked in shock at his three companions.
Sensing something unusual, they all leaned in closer to investigate.
Zigui pulled down Xu Guangyao's collar, revealing his collarbone, where a tattoo was visible. They were all too familiar with this tattoo—it was a Triple Spiral Pattern!
"Gui Xu Society!" Lin Mingchang, Shen Tong, and Xiaoshuang exclaimed almost in unison.
Upon hearing those words, Xu Guangyao's previously fierce expression suddenly froze. He hadn’t expected these people to recognize the Triple Spiral Pattern.
Fang Zigui's face turned pale as he pointed at Xu Guangyao and said, "You, you are a member of the Gui Xu Society?!"
Captain Lu looked puzzled, glancing at the shocked expressions on their faces. "Gui Xu Society? What is that?"
Shen Tong and Xiaoshuang exchanged glances, while Lin Mingchang fixed his gaze on Xu Guangyao without immediately answering Captain Lu's question.
After a few seconds, Lin Mingchang finally spoke up, "Captain Lu, let's take him back to the Police Station first. I'll explain on the way."
