Unlike his previous cold demeanor, Director Xu warmly welcomed them this time, smiling as he apologized for his earlier attitude.
"To be honest," Director Xu sighed, a hint of guilt crossing his face, "after the three suicides, public opinion has been quite unfavorable towards our Experimental Institute. The articles in the newspapers and the rumors circulating in society have dealt a significant blow to us. We were in the process of applying for research funding from an international foundation, and these negative reports could severely impact our application results. So, I... I truly apologize..."
Lin Mingchang took out a paper bag and handed it to Director Xu with both hands.
"Director Xu, inside this bag are complete photographs of The Whisper of the Yellow Swan and the Password Book. Considering their academic value, we believe they should be entrusted to your institute for proper preservation and study."
Although Director Xu had already heard Captain Lu explain over the phone, he was still overwhelmed with excitement at that moment. He accepted the paper bag with both hands, his eyes slightly red as he said, "Thank you so much! This is incredibly important for our research on ancient scripts. On behalf of the Experimental Institute, I express my heartfelt gratitude to all of you! I have already applied for funding to erect memorial statues for Professors Zhou Zijun, Wang Licheng, and Yang Guangming in the institute to honor their selfless sacrifices."
After leaving the Experimental Institute, the five took a short break at a teahouse by the river.
After sipping tea and chatting for a while, Captain Lu turned to Fang Zigui and asked, "Doctor Fang, I'm still unclear about the causes of death for the three scholars. Since they died from poisoning, why was Zhou Zijun seen jumping from a building? And what about Wang Licheng? Why did the autopsy reveal that his lungs contained river water and silt? Xu Guangyao later refused to disclose anything, so we actually don't know much about his actions."
Fang Zigui pondered for a moment before responding thoughtfully, "I have a hypothesis regarding this matter. In the early stages of their poisoning, although they may have lost their ability to speak or call for help, they likely retained some clarity of mind and could still move their bodies somewhat. To protect their tattoos from being taken by the murderer, they might have chosen to jump from buildings or into the river in desperation..."
"I see..." Captain Lu remarked with emotion. "Though they were frail scholars, they chose to face death resolutely in a moment of crisis... It's truly admirable."
Captain Lu took a sip of tea and continued asking, "What are your plans next?"
The four exchanged knowing glances before Lin Mingchang replied with a smile, "Of course, we plan to visit Yellow Crane Tower again for a proper tour!"
The next day, the four set off together once more to visit Yellow Crane Tower.
Yellow Crane Tower had resumed normal operations with visitors coming in groups. Shen Tong walked at the front while Lin Mingchang followed closely behind her, occasionally offering her support. Their figures stretched long in the morning light, almost merging into one.
Zigui and Xiaoshuang walked behind them; Xiaoshuang snapped photos while exclaiming, "It's hard to believe that just days ago we were here laying in wait to catch the murderer."
The four climbed up step by step until they reached the viewing platform at the top of Yellow Crane Tower.
Standing by the railing and gazing out over the landscape, they took in the full view of Wuhan's Three Towns; the Yangtze River wound like a giant dragon flowing eastward.
In the distance, Hankou and Hanyang were faintly visible against an expansive sky.
"What a magnificent Jiangcheng!" Lin Mingchang exclaimed as he took a deep breath.
Shen Tong gazed quietly into the distance. "My grandmother used to say that places with majestic mountains and rivers often have unobstructed energy flow. Seeing it with my own eyes today truly confirms her words."
