Lin Mingchang glanced around, worried that Cheng Siyun might say something inappropriate. Since their first meeting, the young lady from the Cheng Family had shown an excessive enthusiasm that made him quite uncomfortable.
Lin Mingchang hesitantly asked, "Miss Cheng, is there something you need?"
"It's about the three Xiang Embroidery Masters..." Cheng Siyun lowered her voice, "It's not convenient to discuss here. Could you please come to the Back Garden with me? It's quieter there."
Lin Mingchang had a vague feeling that what Cheng Siyun wanted to discuss was serious. He nodded and said, "Alright, I'll let Shen Tong and the others know."
Just as Lin Mingchang was about to turn away, Cheng Siyun hurriedly reached out and grabbed his sleeve. "Wait, Brother Lin, please don't tell them just yet. I hope you can keep this matter confidential for now."
After a moment of contemplation, Lin Mingchang finally nodded in agreement.
He followed Cheng Siyun out of the main hall and into the Cheng Family's Back Garden. The garden was lush with ancient trees and scattered rock formations, with a winding pebble path leading to the Plum Blossom Pavilion at its center.
It was empty here; as they entered the Plum Blossom Pavilion, the music from the main hall drifted in from afar, mingling with the moonlight that spilled into the pavilion.
Cheng Siyun rubbed her hands together nervously, her face filled with worry. "Actually..." she bit her lip gently as if organizing her thoughts, "the three Xiang Embroidery Masters haven't gone to Xiangxi for an inspection; they... they've been missing for two whole months."
"Missing? All three of them? Such a big incident and no one reported it?" Lin Mingchang's voice involuntarily rose a bit.
"Some did." Cheng Siyun quickly glanced at the door, signaling Lin Mingchang to lower his voice. "Two months ago, Teacher Zhao was the first to lose contact, and then Teacher Zhou and Teacher Gu also went silent one after another. Their families came to my father for help; he reached out to some friends in high places at the Police Station to request a discreet investigation, but there has been no progress so far. I'm... I'm really worried about my teachers."
At this point, Cheng Siyun's eyes turned red; it was clear she genuinely cared for her teachers' well-being.
"So you sought me out alone? What do you need me to do?" Lin Mingchang asked cautiously.
Cheng Siyun met Lin Mingchang's gaze. "With three teachers missing for so long and no results from the Police Station investigation, I heard from Sister Xiaoshuang that you were previously a detective at the Spring City Police Station. So... I would like to ask you to help investigate this matter secretly as a private detective..."
Lin Mingchang did not respond immediately; he wasn't prepared to take on the role of a private detective. Moreover, being unfamiliar with the area made investigating a missing persons case quite challenging.
After pondering for a moment, he said to Cheng Siyun, "I need to discuss this with Shen Tong and the others. After all, we are just passing through Changsha and only staying for a few days; I really can't guarantee any results."
"Of course," Cheng Siyun nodded and then suddenly remembered something. "Also, Brother Lin, could you please not tell my father about this yet? He is already very worried about this exhibition; I don't want to add to his troubles."
"I understand; I will keep it confidential for now," Lin Mingchang replied. "After tomorrow's opening ceremony of the exhibition, I will give you an answer."
"Okay, Brother Lin, it's settled then," Cheng Siyun sighed in relief.
Cheng Siyun took a deep breath and said softly, "Brother Lin, you don't know how much Teacher Zhao means to me. If anything were to happen to her..."
The girl choked on her words as tears began to fall down her cheeks.
She instinctively took a step forward, seeking comfort, leaning towards Lin Mingchang.
