Prologue
The wind whipped through the air, carrying a heavy scent of blood, causing Tian Shixiong's hair to fly wildly.
He approached her step by step, his eyes glowing red in the darkness, as if tempting her.
"Come here..." His voice was low and dangerous.
"No, no!" She screamed silently in her heart, yet her legs betrayed her, moving toward him.
He extended a finger and touched her forehead, revealing a cruel smile.
"At last, I have found you, my Heavenly Eye."
With that, pain rippled from her forehead throughout her entire body.
"Help! Someone help her!" Her voice sounded weak and desperate in the darkness.
...
"Brother! Brother! Wake up!" An anxious voice rang in her ears.
"Huh?" Qin Chunya jolted awake, only to fall back to the ground in a daze.
Her eyes hurt, and her head throbbed!
A hand reaching for her forehead was suddenly grasped by someone else.
"Don't move; you have an injury on your forehead!" The man's voice was clear and strong.
"It's just a minor injury," she struggled to look toward the source of the voice but could only see the sunlight—so bright and blinding—that she involuntarily closed her eyes again, tears streaming down.
The Senior Brother cast a spell to summon her into a dream again. If she hadn't been awakened, she might have already been killed.
The Senior Brother's spell was truly powerful; no matter where she fled, she was never safe.
"Come with me to the clinic for a bandage; you're still bleeding from your forehead!" The man looked at her with concern.
"No, thank you!"
She shook off his hand, casually wiped her face, and then collapsed onto a tattered burlap sack in the corner, curling up into a ball.
...
She could hear the voices of the beggars nearby.
They were trying to appease the man, saying she was a blind brat with a terrible temper who never spoke to anyone. Then she heard a loud clatter, likely the sound of him giving them money, and her companions cheered joyfully.
"How noisy!" She pulled the burlap sack over her head.
In truth, her eyes weren't blind; she simply had an eye condition that made it hard for her to see. Also, she was a girl who disguised herself as a boy to evade pursuers.
Just as she was fuming, someone placed a steaming bowl of white porridge in front of her.
"I'm a doctor named Liu Feng. If you don't mind, I can take a look at your eye condition."
Her eye condition had stumped even renowned doctors; how could he possibly cure it? She pressed her lips together and remained silent.
After a long pause without any response from her, he sighed softly. "You can come when you're ready. Turn left at the end of this street; it's the third place on the left, Fengchun Medical Hall. I'll be waiting there."
With that, he turned and walked away.
She remained lying down until it was almost dark, then got up and dragged her burlap sack toward the dilapidated temple to the east.
Inside the temple, beggars were gathered, loudly discussing the news they had heard that day.
"Did you hear? A merchant from the west said that ten people have been killed in a row, their deaths were gruesome, and a strange symbol was drawn on the ground with their blood. Just hearing about it makes me want to vomit."
It was done by the Senior Brother!
Remembering how her family and friends had met such a tragic end sent chills down her spine. She instinctively hugged herself tighter and moved closer to the fire.
The beggars continued their chatter, but she could not hear a single word.
She spent the entire night unable to sleep, barely managing to hold on until dawn.
By then, stalls had begun to open for business on the street. She lay beneath her tattered burlap sack when Liu Feng arrived again at noon, still holding a bowl of porridge and offering some encouraging or worried words.
Of course, she still ignored him.
She thought that if she persisted in this way, he would eventually find it boring and stop bothering her. But she was wrong; Liu Feng was a person of great determination and continued to show up day after day.
And today was no different.
