The sun was high in the sky, baking everyone and causing sweat to pour down their faces.
She had been lying under the sun for most of the day, and passersby avoided her as if she were filth, except for him. He approached her without fear of dirt or smell and struck up a conversation.
"Brother, would you like some porridge?" he kindly opened with this line.
"Is it hot? You should lie down in the shade over there!"
"No!" She turned over to the other side.
He didn't know that no amount of sunlight could warm her body; look, her fingers were as cold as snow.
"Really not going to eat? I added some minced meat to the porridge today; it tastes quite good," he shifted the topic to the porridge.
A beggar nearby chimed in, saying she ate very little and was picky, like a cat. Hearing this, he became more concerned.
"Are you sick? Should I check your pulse?"
"I don't need it! Go away!" She didn’t want help, nor could anyone truly help her.
During her days on the run, she had encountered people who treated her well, but they all ended up tragically at the hands of her senior brother. She didn’t want anyone else to die because of her; that burden was heavy, pressing down on her until she felt close to breaking.
"You... I really can help you," he sighed. "I'll come back tomorrow."
As she heard his footsteps fade away, she secretly opened a small gap and saw his blurry figure disappear into the bustling street. For some reason, her heart wavered.
She picked up the porridge and took a sip, only to suddenly put it down again.
She shouldn’t waver; she couldn’t waver! Remembering that she had been here for over two months, thoughts of leaving began to form in her mind.
"Run! A killer is coming!" a beggar suddenly shouted.
Leaving was simple; her entire belongings amounted to just two tattered garments. Yet this time, for some reason, she felt a twinge of reluctance.
She refused to delve deeper into her feelings, absurdly attributing her hesitation to the beggars—who had given her a broken umbrella just before her departure, shielding her from the rain and allowing her to walk peacefully along the muddy path.
A carriage passed by, and the driver called out to her to be careful, but it was too late.
Water from a puddle splashed all over her. The tattered clothes were now stained with muddy water, darkened with hints of yellow. She merely glanced at it indifferently and did not stop her pace.
To her surprise, the carriage came to a halt, and someone leaned out to ask, “Brother, are you alright?”
It was Liu Feng.
He recognized her as well, looking somewhat surprised before breaking into a smile. “I have to go to the neighboring town for an errand and thought we wouldn’t see each other for another ten days. Who would have thought we’d run into each other here? What a coincidence! Come on up; I’ll give you a ride.”
She shook her head in refusal. Just as she lifted her foot to leave, a dull pain throbbed in her forehead, and a chill washed over her heart.
From past experiences, she knew that her senior brother was nearby.
“Get away!” she shouted at Liu Feng.
“Ah? You’re talking to me!” He raised his eyebrows in surprise.
“Run! A killer is coming; if you want to live, hurry!” She rushed forward and kicked the horse's rear.
She expected the horse to bolt forward, but it sensed the malevolent aura of her senior brother and panicked, rearing up and galloping wildly.
With a loud crash, the carriage collided with a tree and overturned. Fortunately, Liu Feng reacted quickly and jumped out.
But the driver was not so lucky; he fell heavily to the ground and was trampled by the horse, falling unconscious.
Liu Feng picked up the coachman and, without forgetting to hold her hand, said, "Let's hide behind the tree."
"It's useless, my senior brother..."
"Hurry up." He forcefully pulled her behind the tree. At that moment, a fiery red figure appeared through the misty rain, reaching the front of the carriage in the blink of an eye.
He took a deep breath and, recognizing her scent, muttered to himself, "Strange, she was just here. Where did she go?"
He closed his eyes, concentrating as if trying to sense her presence, but to no avail. Frustrated, he vented his anger on the screaming horse, swinging his blade down and severing its head.
The horse's eyes were still blinking, its cries not yet silenced when its body collapsed to the ground, blood spilling everywhere.
He held up the severed head and used its blood to draw a symbol on the ground, moving closer to the tree where she was hiding.
His blood-red demonic eyes suddenly landed on her, and a faint smile appeared at the corner of his mouth. "Little junior sister..."
He found her! She was startled and almost cried out. Liu Feng quickly covered her mouth and shook his head to signal her not to panic. They were so close that she could see herself reflected in his eyes.
After a moment of silence, her senior brother slowly shifted his gaze away. "Come out! I know there’s someone else with you. If you don’t want him to die, come out! Little junior sister..."
So it turned out she had not been discovered.
