It felt like a nightmare, indescribable, as the sounds of bodies colliding echoed grotesquely in the air, one after another, slicing through the senses like a slow execution.
Guan Shubai's resistance grew weaker; her gaze began to hollow out. Her long hair was tangled in the filthy dirt, stained with blood, giving off a metallic, salty scent.
Time passed without her noticing, until Gu Jin'an finally let out a satisfied grunt.
In the throes of ultimate pleasure, he pressed his lips against Guan Shubai's bloodied ones and chuckled softly, "Little Bai, you are finally mine. Are you happy?"
Gu Jin'an tenderly kissed her, then took out a bottle of medicine and carefully sprinkled it on her wounds. He dressed her and draped a cloak over her shoulders before sitting down to chat with her.
He spoke at length, mostly reminiscing about their childhood—the weather back then, their friends, and some mischievous antics they had shared. His tone was cheerful, reminiscent of a young lad of seventeen or eighteen.
Finally, he placed her on the ground and playfully pinched her nose with an affectionate smile. "Just wait a little longer. Once I kill him myself, I'll come to take you home."
Then he left—finally left—his footsteps fading further away, growing distant until they were barely audible, as if he would never return.
Guan Shubai remained there quietly, motionless and silent, without a hint of reaction.
The surroundings were eerily still, with only the sound of the bell at her shoulder gently echoing, making the emptiness around her feel even more pronounced.
She lay there as if she could not hear any sounds from the outside world; all she felt was that this night was interminably long—long enough to last a lifetime.
She had known this day would come; she had known it since the day the Rebels breached the palace gates.
Do you feel shame? Disgust? Or perhaps, a dirtiness so profound that it makes you wish to die?
"Heh..." Guan Shubai sneered, her voice hoarse and terrifying, reminiscent of an elderly woman in her eighties.
It was truly filthy, filthy to the core.
She closed her eyes, her eye sockets felt as if they were on fire—hot and dry, so much so that no tears could flow.
All she wanted was to lie here, to die here, letting all this dirty, disgusting, vile and lowly existence be buried in this murky night!
She bit down on her lip with such force that it nearly broke the skin.
What would others do in her place? Cry and wail? Be heartbroken? Curse and scream? Or perhaps throw themselves against the stones, dying as cleanly as the queen did?
But she couldn't die yet.
He was still waiting for her. What would he do if she died?
She moved her numb hand, flipping her wrist over to reveal a sheathed dagger hidden among the dry grass. In the moonlight, she could see a small character "An" engraved on the hilt.
Sitting up, she grasped the dagger and let out a chilling laugh.
Guan Shubai walked to the prison door and swung the dagger down onto the chains. The lock shattered with a sound, cutting through like butter.
Inside the prison cell, the guards were sprawled in disarray, clearly under the influence of a sedative.
How could someone like him allow his disgraceful deeds to be seen? Guan Shubai sneered as he walked past, noticing that none of them stirred.
She leaned against the cell door, her face pale and breathing lightly. A sharp pain throbbed in her throat, and the overwhelming scent of blood made her feel nauseous. She pressed her hand against her abdomen, her expression softening involuntarily.
Just as he left, she realized she was pregnant.
The power struggles within the palace had already cost her one child; this time, she had to be even more cautious.
Moreover, with him absent from the palace and her at odds with the Empress, she needed to protect herself and this child. Thus, she concealed all news of her condition, revealing it only to a few trusted confidants in her quarters. She never expected to find herself in such a predicament.
"Don't be afraid," she whispered. "Mother will protect you."
The night breeze swept in, lifting Guan Shubai's dark hair as she took a deep breath. "I will protect you."
