The sound of waves of exclamations echoed within the palace walls, filled with a strong sense of joy, as if the bloodshed and slaughter from months ago had never existed.
Guan Shubai's face turned even paler.
She tilted her head back, her slender neck revealing prominent veins. Taking a deep breath, she dragged her sword and headed towards Yangxin Hall.
The guards at the gate tried to stop her, but she shouted angrily, her battle blade slicing through the air as it struck one of them.
Blood splattered, and the man let out a cry as he staggered back.
The guards, witnessing this, drew their swords in alarm. However, to their surprise, she did not flinch or evade; instead, she charged forward recklessly.
The guards were immediately thrown into a panic. For five years, who didn’t know how deeply the Emperor favored this Consort? Now that she was approaching with a sword in hand, who would dare truly harm her?
Guan Shubai kicked open the palace door and stepped inside. Her lower body was drenched in blood; each step made her sway slightly, yet she continued to stagger forward with her sword in tow.
Gradually, a Palace Maid noticed her and gasped before rushing over. Without even glancing at them, she swung her sword and injured several people in succession.
Those who had just recoiled in fear quickly distanced themselves. The more astute among them hurried inside to report, their voices echoing like a long Mongolian tune as they wound through the inner court.
The palace lanterns shone brightly, swirling like a dragon. Gradually, everyone gathered around, staring at the blood-soaked woman dragging her sword, and no one dared to utter a word.
"Consort, His Majesty has summoned you to Cui Xin Palace."
A large group of guards surrounded her, a dark mass that completely blocked her path.
Guan Shubai stopped in her tracks, the night wind blowing against her, lifting the blood-stained hem of her skirt like a white silk flower splattered with vermilion. She coldly regarded the crowd and icily uttered a single word: "Get lost!"
The Captain of the Guards stepped forward and respectfully bowed, saying, "Your Highness, please do not make it difficult for me."
"Get lost!"
Guan Shubai, filled with rage, brandished her knife and moved forward. The Captain furrowed his brow, keeping his sword sheathed and using the scabbard to block her.
Guan Shubai had only practiced some basic strength-training techniques; she was no match for these seasoned soldiers. With a jolt, her hands trembled, and she nearly fell to the ground. Undeterred, she attempted to sidestep him and continue forward, only to be met by another soldier who raised his staff to block her way.
The leader spoke in a deep voice, "Your Highness, if you resist the order, I will have no choice but to be rude."
Guan Shubai gritted her teeth, seemingly ignoring him as she charged ahead. The leader's eyes turned cold as he swung the scabbard and struck her leg. With a sharp crack, Guan Shubai stumbled and fell to her knees.
Blood was already flowing profusely from her lower body, and this blow only added insult to injury. Yet she still clutched the knife tightly, desperately trying to push herself back up.
"Commander Meng, the Emperor has ordered that no one be harmed!"
The Eunuch cried out loudly upon seeing Guan Shubai injured.
Commander Meng frowned slightly. He thought of his younger sister's years of endurance and the future honor or disgrace of the Meng family. A flicker of dark emotion crossed his eyes as he spoke solemnly: "Noble Consort Rong defies the Emperor's orders by barging into the palace with a knife; as the Commander of the Guards, I have no choice but to offend."
Guan Shubai remained silent, her teeth clenched tightly, her neck stubbornly arched as she stared ahead at the resplendent palace, as if trapped in a nightmare, completely oblivious to the commotion around her.
"Take the Consort back to the palace."
A guard stepped forward to grab Guan Shubai, but she struggled fiercely, swinging her knife wildly.
The soldiers grew impatient, forcefully pinning her down and pressing her pale cheek against the filthy ground.
Guan Shubai's eyes were bloodshot, her legs kicking frantically, stained with a deep crimson.
Commander Meng exchanged a glance with his men, and they held her down, dragging her toward Cui Xin Palace.
"Let go of me!" Guan Shubai protested as she was pulled by her arms like a lifeless dog, yet she remained defiant, as if driven mad.
