The morning sunlight streamed through the gaps in the curtains, and Ye Feng slowly opened his eyes, a strange sensation jolting him awake. He found himself lying on a large unfamiliar bed, surrounded by exquisite furniture and fashion magazines.
"Where am I?" Ye Feng instinctively spoke, only to be startled by his own voice—a young woman's voice, soft and melodious.
He sat up abruptly and noticed that he was wearing a silk nightgown, his long black hair cascading down to his waist. As his heart raced, Ye Feng hurriedly got out of bed and stumbled towards a full-length mirror in the corner of the bedroom.
The reflection left him speechless—he was looking at a woman around twenty-three or twenty-four years old, with a slender figure and features as delicate as a finely crafted work of art. Her bright eyes were filled with fear and confusion.
"This can't be happening..." Ye Feng reached out to touch his cheek, and the beauty in the mirror mirrored his actions.
Suddenly, the sound of a phone ringing broke through his shock. Ye Feng found the phone on the bedside table; the screen displayed "Agent Sofia" calling. After hesitating for a moment, he answered the call.
"Lin Ya, are you awake? Don't forget you have the KENZO runway show at ten o'clock today; it's already eight! Hurry up and get ready!" The voice on the other end was urgent and professional, hanging up before Ye Feng could respond.
"Lin Ya..." Ye Feng murmured to himself; it seemed this was now his identity.
A notification chimed on his phone, revealing a new message: "Task: Successfully complete today's fashion show. Evaluation criteria: Natural walk, professional performance. — Puppet Master."
Ye Feng tightened his grip on the phone and bit his lip. This was the second day in a row he found himself trapped in this bizarre game, forced to play different roles. Yesterday he was a poor student; today he had become a glamorous female model.
"What do you want from me?" Ye Feng shouted into the air, but there was no response.
The sound of running water came from the bathroom as Ye Feng clumsily washed up and changed clothes, trying to adapt to this unfamiliar body. He opened the wardrobe filled with fashionable items and randomly picked out what looked like the most ordinary T-shirt and jeans.
Before heading out, Ye Feng grabbed his phone and searched for "model runway tutorial," hastily watching a few videos. He knew nothing about this industry and could only rely on last-minute efforts.
A taxi dropped him off in front of a modern exhibition hall in the city center. Taking a deep breath, Ye Feng pushed open the backstage door.
"Lin Ya! You finally made it!" Agent Sofia rushed over and grabbed his hand. "Quickly go get your makeup done; you're already late!"
The backstage area was bustling with activity as makeup artists, hairstylists, and costume designers surrounded Ye Feng, beginning an overhaul that rivaled "Metamorphosis." He was ushered into a dressing room where he changed into an avant-garde designer outfit before being seated for makeup.
"What are you thinking about? You seem so dazed today," one of the makeup artists asked while continuing to apply powder.
"Nothing much, just a bit nervous," Ye Feng replied cautiously.
"You? Nervous?" another girl laughed. "You’ve walked at Milan Fashion Week; how could you be nervous for such a small event?"
Ye Feng could only smile awkwardly. It seemed that Lin Ya was quite well-known in the modeling circle.
"Starts in ten minutes!" a staff member shouted.
The backstage was in chaos as the models lined up to make their entrance. Ye Feng quietly stood at the back of the line, observing the poses and steps of the models in front of him.
"Keep your back straight, look ahead, and maintain a steady rhythm," a young model whispered to him. "You don’t look too well today; are you okay?"
"Thanks, I’m fine," Ye Feng nodded gratefully.
As the music began and the lights on the T Stage lit up, the first model stepped out. Ye Feng's heart raced as he recalled the tutorials he had watched and the steps of the other models.
Soon it was his turn. Ye Feng took a deep breath, straightened his back, and stepped onto the T Stage. The blinding lights momentarily disoriented him, but he forced himself to calm down and mimicked the movements of the other models as he walked forward.
"Steps too small," he reminded himself silently. "Head up, chest out, look ahead..."
Just as he felt he was getting used to it and prepared to turn at the end of the T Stage, his high heel suddenly wobbled. Ye Feng lost his balance for a moment, stumbling a couple of steps before barely regaining his composure; his expression must have looked quite awkward. The flashes from cameras went wild below, and someone let out a low laugh.
Ye Feng held back his embarrassment and completed the walk according to protocol before almost fleeing back to backstage.
"What happened?" Sofia immediately launched into him. "Is this your first day as a model? That mistake will end up online!"
"I'm sorry, I..." Ye Feng didn't know how to explain.
"Forget it, just get ready for your second outfit and don't mess up again."
During the next walk, Ye Feng was particularly cautious. Although he didn’t make any major mistakes, his performance was clearly stiff and lacked the natural fluidity of a professional model.
Finally, when the fashion show ended, Ye Feng sighed in relief but soon heard his phone buzz with a notification: "Review: Poor rating. Stiff performance lacking professionalism; nearly a failure. New task tomorrow. — Puppet Master."
Looking at the message, Ye Feng felt both angry and frustrated. He declined Sofia's dinner invitation and returned alone to Lin Ya's apartment.
That night, Ye Feng lay in bed, replaying the bizarre events of the past two days in his mind. Was he dreaming, or had he been drawn into some sort of supernatural incident? Who was the Puppet Master? Why did they want him to play these roles?
With these questions swirling in his mind, Ye Feng began searching for clues around the apartment. He checked Lin Ya's phone, computer, and diary, hoping to uncover any hints related to the Puppet Master.
Lin Ya's social media was filled with glamorous photos, but her private notebook revealed a different side of her life—extreme dieting to maintain her figure, estrangement from her family, and confusion about the future.
"Outwardly glamorous, inwardly lonely..." Ye Feng murmured, suddenly feeling a twinge of sympathy for this girl he had never met.
One photo caught his attention—Lin Ya posing with several friends at a place called "Puppet Café." In the background of the photo hung puppets of various shapes and sizes.
"Puppet Master... puppets... could there be a connection?" Ye Feng noted the café's location in his mind, planning to visit if he still found himself in this body tomorrow.
As the night deepened, Ye Feng's eyelids grew heavier. He tried to resist sleep but eventually succumbed to the darkness.
When he awoke again, he found himself back in his familiar bedroom, restored to his identity as Ye Feng. He touched his face to confirm this was not a dream.
"What on earth is happening..." Ye Feng stared at the ceiling, bewildered. "Puppet Master... who are you? Why did you choose me?"
Outside, a full moon hung quietly in the night sky, as if watching over it all.
