Ye Feng stood in front of the gray building, his heart racing uncontrollably. The dilapidated medical school loomed ominously in the fading light of the sunset, creaking as the wind blew through it, as if warning all intruders.
"This is it," Chen Xi said, gripping the signal tracker tightly, her brow furrowed. "All the evidence points here."
Taking a deep breath, Ye Feng glanced at the girl beside him, who had once been an ordinary college student but had now become his most trusted partner. They had been through so much together, from the panic of identity swaps to gradually uncovering the truth behind the Puppet Master.
"Are you ready?" Ye Feng asked.
Chen Xi nodded, determination shining in her eyes.
They stepped into the building, dust floating in the air. A faint light glimmered from a laboratory at the end of the corridor; that was their only target—Professor Wang's secret base.
Ye Feng paused before the door, reflecting on the events of the past few weeks. He had once been an ordinary police officer, then a journalist, and later experienced the lives of countless strangers. These identities had given him different perspectives and abilities, making him understand the importance of truth. Now, he was prepared to confront the mastermind behind it all.
The door was unlocked and opened with a gentle push.
Professor Wang stood with his back to them, focused on adjusting a large machine. Hearing their footsteps, he slowly turned around, his face aged but his eyes sharp.
"I knew you would come," Professor Wang said calmly, as if he had been waiting for long-anticipated guests. "Especially you, Ye Feng. You're smarter than I imagined."
"The game is over, Professor," Ye Feng stepped forward. "We know you are the Puppet Master."
Professor Wang grinned, a smile that sent chills down Ye Feng's spine.
"Puppet Master? I prefer to call myself the Guide. Leading humanity into the next stage of evolution." He sauntered over to a nearby control panel and leaned against it lazily. "This technology was originally developed for treating schizophrenia patients, you know? It allows patients to temporarily detach from their own cognition and experience normal thought patterns."
Chen Xi quietly moved to the other side of the room, signaling to Ye Feng with her fingers to keep Professor Wang occupied.
"Then why use it to create chaos?" Ye Feng questioned while observing his surroundings.
Professor Wang sighed deeply, a look of pity crossing his face as if he were gazing at ignorant children.
"Chaos? That's merely a smokescreen. While everyone is focused on the panic of identity swaps, no one notices that a true revolution is taking place." He pointed at the machine behind him, his eyes gleaming with fervor. "I have successfully infiltrated this city's core network system. Traffic, power, communications—all will be under my control. Imagine a true utopia guided by the brightest minds."
As Ye Feng saw Chen Xi approaching the control panel, he continued, "So you used us, exploited those innocent people, all for your so-called 'utopia'?"
"Sacrifice is necessary." Professor Wang suddenly turned around, alert, and noticed Chen Xi operating the computer. "No!"
He slammed his hand down on a button on the desk, and a sharp alarm blared.
"You think I wasn't prepared?" Professor Wang sneered, pulling a handgun from the drawer. "I've studied you, Ye Feng. Your experiences, every identity you've switched through, have all been under my surveillance."
Ye Feng did not flinch; instead, he took a step forward. The calm he learned from his time as an officer, the insight gained as a journalist, and the courage drawn from countless other identities all converged at this moment.
"Then you should know that I won't give up easily."
Professor Wang pulled the trigger, and the bullet grazed Ye Feng's shoulder. Seizing the opportunity, Ye Feng lunged forward, utilizing his training as a combat instructor to swiftly disarm Professor Wang.
"You don't understand!" Professor Wang struggled. "This world needs guidance! It needs control! People can't make the right choices on their own!"
Ye Feng pinned him to the ground and said calmly, "Is that so? When you created this technology, did you make the right choice?"
Professor Wang's gaze began to waver. Ye Feng continued, "You said you've studied me; then you should know what I learned during my time as a psychologist. Humanity's greatest fear isn't failure but facing the darkness within themselves."
Professor Wang's resistance started to weaken, confusion flickering in his eyes.
"What are you truly afraid of, Professor?" Ye Feng's voice softened, treating him like a patient. "Are you afraid of your technology being misused? Or are you afraid of losing control over what you've created?"
Tears welled in Professor Wang's eyes as his voice trembled. "You don't understand... I've seen the disasters this technology could bring. If it falls into the wrong hands... So I must strike first; I must control everything..."
At that moment, Chen Xi shouted, "I've hacked the system! Ye Feng, hold him down!"
She quickly typed commands on the keyboard as lines of code flashed across the screen. Seeing this, Professor Wang struggled even more fiercely.
"No! You've ruined everything!"
Ye Feng pressed firmly against him and said, "No, we are preventing a disaster. You intended to do good, but you took the wrong path."
Chen Xi hit the last Enter key and let out a long breath. "Done. The system has been reset, and all unauthorized access has been cleared."
Professor Wang seemed to age ten years in an instant, collapsing onto the ground.
"Do you know," Ye Feng said, looking down at the man who had once instilled fear throughout the city, his tone tinged with pity, "your technology could indeed help many people. Just not in the way you imagined."
The sound of sirens grew louder as they approached. Ye Feng took Chen Xi's hand, gazing at the burned machines and the crumpled figure of Professor Wang.
"It’s over," Chen Xi whispered.
Ye Feng shook his head. "No, this is just the beginning. The real challenge is how to use this technology correctly, not to destroy it completely."
They stood by the window, watching the sun set. Ye Feng recalled all the identities he had experienced; those fragments had become an inseparable part of his life.
For some reason, he felt a strange sense of gratitude. It was this crisis that allowed him to experience such a diverse life and helped him find his true self.
When the police burst into the laboratory, Ye Feng and Chen Xi were ready to tell their story about identity, control, and redemption—a tale about the complexities of human nature and a reminder of the importance of balancing power with responsibility.
As Professor Wang was taken away, he glanced back at Ye Feng, his eyes filled with both regret and a strange sense of relief. Ye Feng understood that even a "Puppet Master" was merely a puppet of his own inner fears.
