Since their last escape from the Warden AI's Purification Mission, Xiao He and Bai Zhi moved more cautiously across the island.
To avoid the densely populated human territories and AI surveillance in the urban areas, they decided to attempt crossing a region marked as "Wasteland."
The torn map indicated that this area seemed to be on the edge of the island, characterized by harsh conditions, but it might contain secret passages leading to other parts of the island or some facilities that had not been completely destroyed.
The Wasteland was a region severely eroded by some kind of industrial pollution, with bare land, yellowing plants, and an acrid chemical smell permeating the air.
There was almost no natural food or water source here, making survival conditions far worse than those in the urban ruins.
However, because of this, Amnesiacs were rare in this area, and the direct monitoring by the Warden AI seemed relatively weak.
Yet, the Wasteland was not entirely safe.
Xiao He soon discovered that Zhao Yi's men were active here.
They were not searching for resources; instead, they were conducting some kind of search operation.
Xiao He speculated that they might also be looking for clues to escape the island or searching for her, believing she had uncovered something important.
Her suspicions were quickly confirmed.
While traversing a section of abandoned pipes, they were ambushed by Zhao Yi's subordinates.
It was clear they had been waiting here for a long time, with a clear target: them.
An intense skirmish erupted.
Zhao Yi's men were more ferocious and strategic than those they had encountered before, using the complex terrain to encircle them.
With her instincts as a detective and crisis response skills, Xiao He led Bai Zhi through the narrow pipes and obstacles to counterattack.
Her body’s memory kicked in at a critical moment, allowing her to anticipate attacks, seek cover, and execute precise blocks and counterattacks.
In the midst of the struggle, fragments of battle flashed through her mind—street chases, close combat, gunfire, and the shouts of her colleagues.
Though these fragments were brief, they clearly indicated that her past was filled with danger and conflict.
Bai Zhi, though not skilled in combat, found her sensitivity unexpectedly useful at this moment.
She could sense the positions of enemy ambushes, feel the direction from which danger approached, and even identify structures that were hazardous and likely to collapse.
Her abilities, combined with Xiao He’s combat skills, allowed them to find a glimmer of hope despite their disadvantage.
In their most desperate moment, they were cornered into a dead end.
Zhao Yi appeared in person.
He did not strike immediately; instead, he watched them with a sinister grin.
"You’ve indeed uncovered quite a few secrets, Xiao He. However, they now belong to me. Your abilities should be put to my use."
He was clearly intrigued by the combat prowess Xiao He had displayed earlier and was still attempting to recruit her.
Xiao He looked into his eyes, seeing the twisted desire for power and control within them, and felt a deep revulsion once again.
The scars on his body, his gaze, his commanding manner… all of these evoked a vague sense of familiarity in her, yet she still couldn’t piece together a specific image.
Who exactly was he? What connection did he have to her past?
Xiao He did not respond to his recruitment. Instead, while he spoke to distract them, she took advantage of an unstable chemical canister in the wasteland environment to create a small explosion.
In the midst of chaos, she grabbed Bai Zhi and seized the opportunity to escape, shaking off Zhao Yi and his subordinates.
Although they successfully evaded danger, this experience made them realize that Zhao Yi's threat had not vanished; instead, it had become more urgent with their actions.
He was like a hunter, and they were his prey.
What was even more terrifying was that his goal seemed to extend beyond mere survival; it was about controlling everything on the island, including potential hidden secrets.
The battle in the wasteland further awakened Xiao He's combat instincts, and more related Memory Fragments flashed through her mind.
She realized that her body remembered far more than her consciousness did.
Zhao Yi's obsession with her also made her question whether their past held a more direct connection, one that went beyond the relationship of Criminal and pursuer.
Perhaps they had all been participants or victims of some grander event.
After escaping the wasteland, they knew they could no longer linger on the fringes; they had to find a way to the island's Core Area as soon as possible.
Only there could they truly understand everything and find a way to put an end to it all.
And Zhao Yi would be one of the greatest obstacles they had to overcome on their journey to the Core Area.
