The deceased was named Ling Zhiming, thirty-five years old, and the chairman of Ling Corporation.
Unfortunately, the family had fallen on hard times, and he was burdened with considerable debt, leading a rather uncomfortable life. It was only upon investigation that it was revealed that a murder incident had occurred in their family ten years prior, one that seemed impossible to have happened!
The the Ling Family resided in a house called Rose Manor, located near S Mountain on the outskirts of Shanghai.
Back then, Ling Zhiming's father, Ling Yan, was a well-known entrepreneur in Shanghai. Rose Manor was built to please his beloved wife.
His wife adored Rose Manor; every year during the blooming season in May and June, she would fill the entire house with flowers from the garden.
The the Ling Family was not particularly large. Ling Yan and his wife had three children.
The eldest was Ling Zhiming, who was cautious and steady, earning his father's favor. He studied business management in the United States and returned home after graduating with excellent grades to help manage the family business.
The second son, Ling Zhipeng, worked hard in his studies but showed little interest in the family business. Because of his elder brother's capabilities, Ling Yan did not pressure Ling Zhipeng to take over the family affairs and allowed him to pursue his own interests. Now, Ling Zhipeng serves as an associate professor at a university, with a promising future ahead.
The youngest child was their daughter, Ling Xiao.
Ling Xiao lived up to her name and was always smiling. She resembled her mother closely and was a very beautiful girl. She was also the apple of her parents' eye.
However, ever since the family moved into Rose Manor, it seemed as if they had been cursed, facing one misfortune after another.
It all began when Mrs. Ling was diagnosed with liver cancer and soon passed away. Heartbroken, Ling Yan could not accept this reality and stopped attending to company matters, isolating himself in his deceased wife's room in deep sorrow. His days of neglecting food and drink did not last long before he succumbed to a cerebral hemorrhage. This could be described as a tragedy.
Things were not over yet.
Not long after Ling Yan's death, Ling Xiao also committed suicide.
She was only sixteen that year.
"You mentioned earlier that there are things that are impossible to commit as crimes," Luo Xiaoye reminded me, her eyes filled with curiosity.
"That's right. Ling Xiao's death is very strange. First of all, she committed suicide in a room filled with Rose Pavilion flowers, which is already concerning. At the time, there were rumors that Ling Xiao's mother had taken her away."
I sighed, trying to recall the situation back then.
"What's wrong with suicide? Just because the room was filled with Rose Manor flowers?" Luo Xiaoye frowned slightly, seemingly deep in thought.
"Of course not. You have to understand, the first person to discover Ling Xiao hanging was their maid. She saw the girl hanging when she passed by Ling Xiao's window. In a panic, she immediately went to open the door, but to her surprise, it was locked from the inside! So she had to break down the door."
I paused for a moment before continuing, "After an investigation, the police found that the door was indeed locked with a key from the inside, and all the windows were also locked from within. It was a sealed room. The troubling question arises: if this was a suicide case, then why couldn't the police find the key after thoroughly searching the room? They searched every inch! If this was a murder case, how did the murderer leave the room? It's simply something that cannot be done by a human; it's practically impossible to commit."
"Let me ask, were the Rose Manor flowers in vases or arrangements?" Luo Xiaoye leaned back on the sofa, her eyes filled with contemplation.
"They should have been arrangements," I replied.
"What was the condition of the room like?" Luo Xiaoye asked me, her eyes glimmering with anticipation.
"Aside from the desk, everything else was fine. Ling Xiao had hanged himself using the desk; after securing the rope, he kicked the table over. As a result, some items like pen holders and teacups fell to the floor."
I tried my best to describe the situation in detail.
