After I caught up with him, we turned into an alley. "A Fei, I want to talk to you." I parked my bike. "What's going on with you? This is just ridiculous." A Fei also parked his bike to the side. "A Fei, we've known each other for twelve years. Although we are not related by blood, I've always considered you like my own brother." I said earnestly. "Yes, that's right. We're not brothers, but more than brothers. What do you want?" A Fei seemed a bit annoyed. "You know I like Sha Xiaomei. Why did you have to get so close to her?" I made my point clear. A Fei smiled bitterly and said, "Have you ever told me? Have you ever told Sha Xiaomei that you like her? Have you? Huh?!" A Fei was a bit agitated at this moment. Right! It seemed I had never told A Fei that I liked Sha Xiaomei, nor had I confessed to Sha Xiaomei. For a moment, I was left speechless by A Fei's words. "Jie," A Fei continued, "we're brothers. If you had told me back then that you liked her, if you had pursued her back then, if Sha Xiaomei had even the slightest bit of affection for you, then I would have kept my distance from her. But the fact is she doesn't like your type, and you never pursued her or did anything for her." A Fei's emotions calmed down a lot. "Fine! Then I'll decide to pursue her now; it's not too late, right? Don't worry, I won't take your charity; we'll compete fairly." I glared at him and said, "Alright, do as you wish. But I want you to promise me one thing: no matter who Sha Xiaomei chooses in the end, we will still be good brothers." A Fei became emotional and said, "That's impossible! I won't just stand by and watch the girl I like be with my good brother." My stubbornness flared up again as I pushed my bike away. "Jie! I'm out! In my heart, brothers are more important than girlfriends." A Fei called out to me. "How touching! Did you learn that from a TV drama? I don't want your charity!" At that moment, I was so angry that I rode away without looking back, leaving A Fei standing there in a daze. Looking back now, I realize how childish I was at that time because I really hurt my good brother's feelings. 0

The next day at school, we didn't talk at all on the way there. During class, Teacher Qiu announced that we wouldn't have basketball practice anymore because the final exams were coming up in five days. We were all nervously reviewing our materials. My QQ hadn't been online for over a week; there was no time and certainly no mood for it. 0

As we were buried in our studies, Xia Ying suddenly whispered to me, "Actually, you looked really cool when playing basketball." Huh? She actually complimented me! And after all this time since the game too; she only thought of complimenting me now? According to logic and psychology, Xia Ying's sudden change must have some ulterior motive. "Really?" I looked at her with a sly smile. "Yeah! You looked really cool! Why are you looking at me like that? Are you trying to chase me?" Ugh! I've seen narcissistic people before, but I've never seen someone this self-absorbed! "What an international joke! Am I going to chase you?! Who would chase a tomboy like you?" "Hmph! If you're trying to chase me, that's bad luck for you!" "Me? My birthday is in January; you're definitely younger than me; you're the kid!" "I'm also born in January; who knows who's older!" We started arguing without caring about anyone else around us. "Xiang Jie, Xia Ying! What are you doing?" Oh no! Our homeroom teacher Zhang found us out. "Nothing... just discussing a problem... Summer classmate, how do we solve this question..." I quickly grabbed my textbook and flipped through it randomly to show Xia Ying a question. "Keep your voice down; don't disturb the other students." "Yes, Teacher Zhang. Summer classmate, we need to keep our voices down when discussing in the future; otherwise it will disturb other students... It's all your fault for being seen by the teacher!" "Speak louder; speak louder so the teacher can't hear!" Xia Ying retorted smugly. "You're ruthless!" It made me feel an impulse to crush her. 0

After class, I walked out of the classroom and strolled down the hallway when Shuai Dong and Pang Hao ran over to me. "What's with the rush? Slow down." I saw them panting heavily. "What happened between you and A Fei?" Pang Hao asked nervously. "Nothing much; we've become rivals in love." "Huh???" Shuai Dong and Pang Hao both widened their eyes in surprise. "No way! Who are you two competing over?" Shuai Dong scratched his head in confusion. "Sha Xiaomei?!!!" They both exclaimed in unison. "So what? We're competing fairly," I replied nonchalantly. "But... even if you both like the same girl, there's no need to act like enemies; you've been friends since childhood!" Pang Hao tried to reason with me. "It's different," Shuai Dong interrupted Pang Hao and continued, "Once women get involved between friends, it creates an awkward situation." Shuai Dong seemed to be educating Pang Hao like a teacher; he must have watched too many dramas where friends fall out over women. 0

Final exams came around; my review went well as I easily completed half of the questions. After finishing the exams, we finally got some time off—winter break! The exhaustion from half a year of high school suddenly hit me all at once; sigh! It's time for a good rest. 0

January 17th of 2011 is my 17th birthday. Wow! I've been on this earth for 17 years already! Around eight in the morning, I was still snuggled under my blankets while my parents had already left home and left some money for me since they couldn't accompany me on my birthday today due to some matters. Suddenly someone knocked on the door. “Who is it? It's hard enough to sleep in.” Annoyed, I crawled out of bed and opened the door. “Happy Birthday!” As soon as I opened it, Shuai Dong and Pang Hao shouted together. “Birthday star! This is your birthday gift: this one is from me; this one is from Pang Hao; this one is...” “Whose?” “A Fei's... he even ordered a cake...” Shuai Dong said quietly. When I heard that, my heart felt warm; this guy still remembered my birthday. 0

“Why don't we invite A Fei along to go hiking together?” Pang Hao suggested cautiously. “Whatever; it's up to you guys.” How could I possibly disagree? At that moment, it was just that I cared too much about face and didn't want to soften my words; actually what I'd said in the alley was just an impulsive remark—I wasn't angry anymore. 0

“Great! I'll call him right now.” Pang Hao quickly took out his phone and dialed A Fei's number. After a while A Fei arrived. “I'm here,” he said casually as if nothing happened between us before. “Yeah,” A Fei replied as he came in response to our invitation for fun together. 0

“Alright!” Pang Hao and Shuai Dong exchanged glances while secretly laughing at our conversation style today. This birthday was very enjoyable; we went hiking first then visited the zoo before playing on a rapid boat ride finally ending up at Pizza Hut with our cake where we lit candles on top of it. 0

“Jie, make a wish.” Shuai Dong said as he handed it over to me while holding his breath waiting for me to blow them out after closing my eyes tightly wishing silently before blowing them out immediately afterward. 0

“What did you wish for?” A Fei suddenly asked curiously. 0

“Do we even need to ask? Of course it's about defeating you so that Sha Xiaomei will like me!” With a sneer on my face feeling as though all rifts between A Fei and myself were mended within that instant—actually what I'd wished was for us four friends always being happy together forever without any sadness or separations—but hey A Fei don’t get too proud of yourself because I'm not giving up on Sha Xiaomei! 0

After dinner we walked along the riverside road enjoying night views of city lights shining brightly through colorful neon signs illuminating everything around us. 0

“I really want to sing!” Suddenly feeling inspired by something spontaneous within myself prompted me into action saying aloud excitedly “Hmm hmm what should we sing?” Pang Hao scratched his head pondering deeply before saying “I know what song!” He started singing: “In your glorious moments let me sing a song for you…” 0

“Together we'll walk down this road ahead even if it's through rivers we'll cross together… hardships or fatigue mean nothing…” A Fei joined in singing along harmoniously with us four singing together under bright city lights feeling truly exhilarating! 0

When returning home dragging tired bodies back into rooms pulling out phones logging onto QQ seeing Xue Er’s & Cookie’s avatars bouncing around excitedly—Xue Er sent three messages earlier today at nine AM & seven PM respectively saying: “Dao Dao happy birthday!” “Dao Dao are you there?” “Dao Dao hope you're happy today!” Xue Er has always been so sweet & considerate while Cookie only sent one message at midnight saying: “Soda happy birthday.” Huh? How did she know it was my birthday? 0

I never told her about it nor did any information regarding birthdays appear on QQ profile—could she read fortunes or something? Just as these thoughts crossed my mind Cookie came online immediately starting conversation: “Soda how was your birthday today? Are you happy?” 0

“It was okay but how did you know about my birthday?” 0

“I can calculate things.” 0

“Come on tell me honestly.” 0

“My words are true.” 0

This Cookie keeps secrets from me—whatever—I won’t pry further because after spending time communicating with her I've learned that with her quirky personality if she doesn't want something revealed no matter what she won't say anything about it—sigh! There's simply no way around Cookie’s mysterious ways! 0

In the blink of an eye, the short winter break has passed. This Spring Festival was lively and joyful, and the key point is that I received some lucky money, heh heh, and set off firecrackers. However, I always feel that the New Year doesn't have the same feeling as it used to; perhaps it's because there's no freshness anymore. But no matter what, a new semester is about to begin, new year, new atmosphere. Xiang Jie, let's do our best! 0

School has started, and A Fei and I have resumed our routine of riding bikes and chatting on our way to school. When we reached the school gate, we saw Sha Xiaomei. "Good morning, Sha Xiaomei!" I hurried over to greet her, determined not to let A Fei take advantage of the situation. "Oh, good morning, Xiang! Hey! Yu Chengfei!" 0

Then she walked over to A Fei. I felt a surge of jealousy; it was extremely frustrating. "Do you remember me? I'm Sha Xiaomei. Happy New Year." "Of course I remember. Happy New Year," replied A Fei, surprisingly calm and not blushing this time. How infuriating! Sha Xiaomei smiled at A Fei again. Watching them chat happily together made me want to rush over and give A Fei a good scolding. In the distance, I noticed a boy also watching Sha Xiaomei and A Fei talk; I recognized him as Situ Jianfei, a second-year student who is known for being academically poor but has a rather aloof personality. He is quite a prominent figure in school. When he saw that scene, he laughed—a very strange laugh... 0
