In the darkness, a voice emerged: "Do you know who the female corpse that disappeared with Jack is?"
It was the mechanical voice speaking again.
Guan Qing replied, "No one has reported a missing person. The identity of the female corpse is a mystery."
"I can tell you her name. Her name is Wei Namian, a technician from Mei Xu Temperature Regulation Company."
"How can you be sure that the corpse is Wei Namian?"
"I had an appointment to meet her. But she never showed up. I suspect that the woman who died on the mountaintop is her."
"If it is her, why did she die?"
"Because she knew a secret she shouldn't have known."
"What secret?"
"That's why I asked you to investigate," the mechanical voice said, as a three-dimensional cube made of blue beams appeared in midair. Inside it was an electronic access card and a badge marked with the name of Mei Xu Company and Guan Qing's name, along with her photo. "You can check it out."
"Who are you?"
"A person concerned about Wei Namian." As the voice finished speaking, the door behind Guan Qing opened again.
Guan Qing turned around to see an angry man standing at the doorway, holding a gun aimed at her with one hand and a remote control in the other. He lowered his voice and questioned, "Who are you? Why are you using this room without permission?"
"I was invited," Guan Qing also aimed her gun at the man. "And who are you?"
"I'm the homeowner here." The man pressed the remote control, and the room immediately revealed its true form.
It turned out that this cubicle was quite ordinary, furnished with just two sofas and a coffee table. Because the entire city was filled with surveillance cameras, people cherished their privacy in public gatherings.
And this place was one of the few spots in the city without any surveillance devices.
To Guan Qing's surprise, there was even an open window, and a figure was seen running away outside.
Guan Qing chased after them but saw that the person had jumped into an unmarked black sedan and sped onto the main road, disappearing without a trace.
Guan Qing reached the main road and saw a mix of snow and mud on the ground, with tire tracks crisscrossing, making it impossible to trace the car's path.
From above, a black sedan sped away from the suburbs, and as it passed under a pedestrian bridge, it emerged transformed from black to red.
This was thanks to new technology.
Automakers had invented a method to change a car's color at will; with the push of a button, the vehicle could become any color desired.
Soon, the red sedan blended into the bustling traffic of the city center.
The mysterious meeting that night left Guan Qing deeply worried: Was Jack's death related to Wei Namian? To Mei Xu Company? Or were she and Jack caught up in some major conspiracy?
Guan Qing accessed highway surveillance footage and finally tracked the black sedan's movements.
After changing to red, the car ultimately stopped in front of an apartment building.
Guan Qing was very familiar with that building; it was Jack's apartment.
She enlarged the image of the car and noticed a scratch on its left side, which matched Jack's vehicle. That scratch had been left during a pursuit of a fugitive, and Jack had never repaired it.
Using image software to sharpen the view inside the car, she was startled when she first saw the driver's face.
The driver's face was scarred and marked with burn scars that twisted like gnarled roots, rendering his original appearance unrecognizable.
However, judging by his upper body and head silhouette, he seemed to be male.
Could it be Jack?! Was he still alive?!
Guan Qing couldn't afford to waste time; she quickly drove to Jack's residence.
In the underground parking lot, she found Jack's car, still warm from use.
This indicated that someone had just driven it.
Guan Qing put on gloves and pried open the car door; the keys were still in the ignition.
She collected fingerprints from the steering wheel and entered "Cigarette Case" into her computer. Soon, "Cigarette Case" matched the data. Upon seeing the results, Guan Qing felt both disappointed and confused.
The fingerprints on the steering wheel belonged to only one person: Shi Guang, not Jack.
However, Shi Guang had died in a car accident six months ago.
His body was claimed by his family and had already been cremated.
So how could a deceased person appear again?
Guan Qing entered all the information into the Criminal Investigation system. After a flicker of the screen, it displayed a line of deep blue text: "Although this is a high-tech era, we have yet to invent the technology for resurrection."
Then, it showed a large, bold red message: "Case Not Established."
Guan Qing tried again.
The computer repeated the same information.
Feeling helpless, Guan Qing carefully read through Shi Guang's personal profile and discovered that he was a journalist.
After the incident, the family member who claimed his body had signed as Jack.
The signature on the cremation document was also Jack.
