Hai Hao chose not to fly but instead carried the heavy flying device on his back as he walked to the edge of the square.
By the time he arrived, he was drenched in sweat.
At a corner near the intersection, he saw Min Di crouching on the ground beside a little girl wearing roller skates, a pool of blood beneath her head.
Min Di checked the girl's pulse and exclaimed, "She's still alive!"
The meeting room of the Criminal Investigation Department was established deep beneath the ocean.
Due to the population explosion on Earth, the surface had become overcrowded. The government ultimately decided to relocate all its agencies underwater, allowing sunlight to reach the citizens above.
Thus, outside Hai Hao's window, there were no green leaves dancing in the light; instead, there was the deep blue sea, with sea turtles drifting through annually and dolphins occasionally visiting.
The officers were gathered around a desk-like apparatus. Si Guanyu, the head of the Criminal Investigation Department, pressed the start button on a remote control, and a three-dimensional holographic image appeared above the device: a depiction of the deceased standing up from a truck, a bullet hole visible in his forehead.
"The deceased is named Tang Xuan, aged forty-five. He was the organizer of this demonstration. The scale of this demonstration was quite small, with only fifty participants and an old diesel pickup truck that belonged to Tang Xuan's family. This demonstration had been approved by the government in terms of scale, theme, number of participants, and route; it was legal. So far, no organization has claimed responsibility for this shooting," Si Guanyu stated before tossing the remote control to forensic expert Lu Yanxue.
Lu Yanxue was a tall girl. She manipulated the remote control, focusing the camera on the head of the deceased in the holographic image and said, "The head of the deceased was not penetrated. The bullet should still be lodged within Tang Xuan's skull. However, we did not find any bullet in his brain."
Upon hearing this, a murmur spread among the officers.
They all thought of the same reason.
Lu Yanxue nodded and said, "Yes, it's an Ice Bullet with a diameter of 4 millimeters. It has completely melted, leaving no trace. However..."
She pulled up a new image that quickly replaced Tang Xuan's screen, revealing a little girl. "She is another victim named Yu Feifei, a child from an orphanage. The hospital has already initiated rescue efforts, but she remains in a coma. Unfortunately, according to the doctors, even if she survives the critical period, the bullet has damaged her brain, and she may end up in a vegetative state. "How tragic; it might have been a stray shot," someone remarked.
Another person asked, "What about the surveillance footage? There are over ten Surveillance Cameras around the square; didn't any of them capture the assailant's movements?"
Forensic expert Lu Yanxue tossed the remote control to a tall, thin officer. The officer pressed another button and said, "This is all the surveillance footage we collected from the square."
As his words settled, the screen first displayed a flickering blackness before revealing various styles of women's underwear appearing like snowflakes.
These pieces of underwear resembled the grinning mouths of clowns, mocking the audience before them. A Male Officer sighed and said, "Someone hacked into the surveillance system; we can't trace the source."
"What about reporters? The media? Could they have any leads?" Min Di pressed on relentlessly.
The same officer shrugged and replied, "This is the worst kind of misfortune. No media outlet came to cover this demonstration. 'Resist Robots' is an old and tired theme for demonstrations; it doesn't attract media attention like sales promotions at shopping malls do. So, Tang Xuan's demonstration was a failure, and he lost his life for it."
As he spoke, his gaze was inadvertently drawn outside the window, causing his mouth to drop open in shock.
The other officers followed his gaze and saw a patch of blood red in the ocean outside.
This blood red spread like an encroaching fog, within which appeared a dolphin covered in wounds.
Suddenly, a large mouth with sharp teeth appeared behind the dolphin, and a shark lunged at it, sinking its jaws into the dolphin's belly. More blood spread through the seawater.
