The monitor in the intensive care unit emitted a dry, mechanical sound, indicating that the patient on the bed was still breathing and had a heartbeat.
The attending physician of Yu Feifei informed Hai Hao that the little girl had basically passed the critical period but still needed to be observed closely.
One thing was certain: the little girl was now in a vegetative state.
The ward was filled with large white lilies, which were Yu Feifei's favorite flowers.
The vibrant fragrance of the lilies mingled with the faint blue scent of disinfectant in the room, enveloping Yu Feifei, who had become a vegetative patient.
A young nurse was gently wiping Yu Feifei's face, occasionally applying a bit of water to her dry lips.
Hai Hao did not enter the room. He felt ashamed for being unable to solve the case.
December 31, 4,319,999,999 A.M.
Today was the last day of this year.
Tomorrow marked 4.32 billion years, the four hundred thirty-second millennium of humanity.
It was a year worth celebrating. Hai Hao got up early, shaved, and chose a shirt, preparing himself as if for a blind date. He had been busy with work and hadn’t taken the time to groom himself like this in a long while. He first went to Sunflower Alley and quietly left a box of gifts in front of the door on Kuwah Lane: a thumb-sized Kuwah Lane brooch and a remote-controlled toy car.
Around ten o'clock, when Kuwah Lane opened the door, a gift caught their eye. Although the gift was unsigned, Kuwah Lane immediately knew who it was from. They glanced towards the entrance of the alley and silently wished Hai Hao a prosperous New Year.
Later, Hai Hao met with Min Di, and they bought a gift to visit Yu Feifei.
Yu Feifei was still in the intensive care unit. The corridor outside the ward was eerily quiet. It was a holiday, with only a few doctors and nurses on duty. As Hai Hao and Min Di approached the ward door, they noticed a shadow moving inside.
A sudden instinct prompted Hai Hao to grab Min Di's arm. They peered through the gap in the blinds that had not been fully drawn and saw a figure picking up a pillow and pressing it against Yu Feifei's head. Alarmed, they rushed into the ward together.
The person holding the pillow had an odd appearance; the left half was human while the right half was metallic, resembling a low-grade hybrid robot. As soon as the robot spotted Hai Hao, it lunged at him.
Hai Hao drew his gun and fired three shots, hitting its head.
Was someone trying to assassinate Vegetative State Patient Yufei Fei? Why? Could Yu Feifei be the key to this case?
In that moment, Hai Hao felt he had grasped a thread of evidence. He quickly arranged for Yu Feifei to be transferred to another hospital, leaving officers behind for her protection.
During the New Year period, there were very few people at the bureau.
The office submerged in sea water was even quieter. Hai Hao and Min Di decided to reread all the case files related to this incident.
As he read on, his stomach growled, prompting him to head to the vending machine for some snacks.
When Hai Hao reached into his pocket for change as he stepped outside, he felt a small protrusion on one of the coins.
It was a series of black dots, Braille, indicating the denomination of the coins. Suddenly, he understood.
Hai Hao brought Min Di to the resource room, where they found a backup of the computer Word software used by humans around the year 2000.
He then input the software into the computer.
Hai Hao opened a new Word document and entered the mysterious pattern:
∞, 2″✔≥÷÷″/……
"What does it say?" Min Di still didn't understand.
Hai Hao pointed to the upper right corner of the document and said, "There are many fonts for text. This one, called 'bookshelfsymble 7', was used around the year 2000, which is over a billion years ago from our current time. No wonder our system doesn't recognize it."
He then highlighted the font with the cursor and repeatedly clicked on options in the "Font" section.
After several trials, a line of text appeared on the screen:
"We are all robots."
"We are all robots."
