Hai Hao lunged at Du Fansheng.
Despite his hatred for the fact he had just heard, he had to seize the last opportunity to convey the message that Yu Feifei was the key to salvation.
However, he suddenly felt his limbs go weak, his body sliding to the ground like a wooden puppet. He saw Min Di and Du Fansheng collapse just like him.
Could the "Jie Bo" software have been activated?
Hai Hao thought of his wife. He realized how laughable his views on death had been when she passed away. Death wasn’t so mysterious. It was merely a program. He recalled his sister, who was conducting geological surveys on a distant alien planet, destined to die without any knowledge of it. He also thought of Kuwah Lane; what would she feel if she knew the truth? A woman well-versed in the term "fate." He remembered a colleague who had disguised himself as an Indian Monk, pretentiously handing him a note that read:
"Human Life and Death is a Calamity. One calamity equals Four Billion Three Hundred Twenty Million Years."
Could the Buddhist saying be the same as Jie Yu?
He recalled another phrase: "Fact Is Stranger Than Fiction."
The clock chimed.
Just as Hai Hao opened his mouth, he suddenly found himself unable to make a sound.
He thought of the birthday gift he had prepared for his sister. She would never receive it. Perhaps he wouldn’t have to worry about whether the gift was outdated anymore. He heard a buzzing sound echoing in his eardrums, countless images flashing through his mind.
There was his childhood, his parents, relatives, friends, playful banter with his sister Hai Bo, his wedding, and the death of his wife.
These images played back like a film reel; Hai Hao wished to linger on any one of them but found himself unable to control his thoughts. It felt as if someone else held the remote control to his brain.
Then, with a snap, the remote turned off, plunging him into darkness.
The fingers of Hai Hao, Du Fansheng, and Min Di loosened their grip.
The singing in the tunnel ceased.
On the ground, in the city, pedestrians suddenly collapsed and died.
The child learning to ride a bicycle suddenly lost control and rolled to the side. The window cleaner high above dangled like a thin piece of paper. A car, resembling a spaceship, veered off course and crashed, while police patrolling the skies fell like leaves... Then came the impact, the accidents, the explosions, and more explosions connected to the chaos!
“Jie Bo” was not only happening on this planet but also on others. Wherever there were “humans,” this end could reach. Everyone was dead!
Because: We are all robots!
The world seemed to revert to its initial state of chaos, returning to the “reset point” created by humanity, enveloped in silence.
Vegetative State Patient Yufei Fei, the last fortunate survivor of pure humanity, lay in bed watching as the officer guarding her fell.
Six days later, dehydrated and soiled, she lay in a stench-filled bed when she heard a knock on the door...
Note:
This story was compiled from an ancient and mysterious parchment.
The parchment contained records about the visitor at the door, translated into modern language as follows:
The visitor was a Female Explorer who had just returned from a newly discovered planet.
When she and her colleagues landed, they were greeted by a home ruled by death, littered with corpses. She could find no relatives and no answers.
Using a life detection device, she found the only living person on the entire planet: a patient in a vegetative state. However, due to prolonged dehydration, the girl died that very night.
In extreme despair and sorrow, the Female Explorer and her colleagues began to restore their home. Too many bodies awaited cremation. With only five members on her team, they were unable to handle the vast population of the planet. The unprocessed corpses emitted a foul odor.
The stench wrapped around the entire planet like a thick black blanket. Countless beasts smelled the scent of decay and emerged from the jungle. While dealing with the bodies, the explorers also had to fend off these beasts. Despite their efforts, billions of corpses continued to rot. Eventually, exhausted, they had no choice but to temporarily abandon this planet and decided to head to another one they had just explored.
To commemorate this planet ruled by death, they named it “Earth.”
That was also the planet they had recently surveyed. They hoped to return once everything had passed.
After days of suffering and toil, the explorers’ hair became dirty and tangled; calluses on their hands were constantly worn down, bleeding and forming new ones. Unable to manage their hair any longer, they made the decision to shave their heads.
Strange characters appeared above everyone's heads:
∞, ∴⋯~~⇔⇔″/…/·……-
They could not comprehend the meaning behind them.
This parchment was unearthed from a mysterious ancient city ruin known as Loulan on Earth.
Loulan belongs to a country called China, located on the northwest shore of Lop Nur, downstream from the Peacock River.
The authorship of the parchment remains untraceable. The scroll offers no explanation on how they managed to escape this calamity.
Perhaps, when Jie Bo arrives, they were on "Earth," where an unknown special element allowed these five explorers to evade disaster.
At the end of the parchment, there is a warning: in another 4.3 billion years, Jie Bo will descend again.
If the contents of the parchment are to be believed, we can deduce a truth: We are all robots.
Some may doubt this, but let us not forget:
Fact is stranger than fiction.
