"Too many things are wrong here."
Yarou casually picked up a pen and wrote down the names of three people, then circled Matsushita Kazuya and Ueno Jun. "First, there's these two. One is a woman who actively pursues with genuine feelings, while the other is a man who passively accepts everything, always putting his brother first. He only hurried to pick out a ring when the wedding was approaching. Do their feelings really reach the level where they can get married and live together?"
Yarou then circled Matsushita Kazuya and Matsushita Toshiya. "It's also strange how far their brotherly relationship has come. From your description, since Matsushita Kazuya cares so much about his brother, why did he choose to be with Ueno Jun?"
The pen paused for a moment before finally circling Ueno Jun and Matsushita Toshiya. "Interestingly, their relationship seems the most ordinary—just typical human emotions. Yet, it coincidentally became evidence against Ueno Jun in this case."
"Are you suggesting that there are doubts about this case?"
"Exactly. Just looking at the relationships among the three of them reveals many oddities. The hostility is too apparent; it seems like Ueno Jun is the only suitable suspect."
Zekawa nodded while recalling the situation at that time and continued, "The police mentioned something similar back then, but later they couldn't find Ueno, so it seemed to just fade away."
"Alright, tell me your purpose for coming here," Yarou set down the pen and voiced the question Zekawa had been waiting to answer.
"I want you to prove Ueno's innocence."
"Oh?"
"I don't believe Ueno did it. I've known her for several years; how could I not know what kind of person she is? And just like you said, she's about to get married—why would she do something completely meaningless?"
After finally expressing what he had held in for months, Zekawa felt a wave of relief wash over him.
In fact, these words were meant for the police, but without any substantial evidence, who would believe him if he spoke them out loud?
After much struggle, he ultimately decided to share his thoughts with Yeluo Tan, a companion he had grown up with. He had to admit that ever since childhood, Yarou had always inspired a special sense of trust in others.
"I can't fully speculate on this matter just yet. How are those two brothers doing now?"
"Junya has been in a coma since they managed to save his life. Kazuya looks like a shell of himself, spending all day at the hospital with him." When Zekawa mentioned "shell," a wave of sadness washed over him.
Suddenly, Yarou turned to the side, facing a small window that offered a view of a wilted cherry tree in the little garden outside.
"I will keep an eye on this. Please leave me the phone number of the officer who investigated this matter, as well as the addresses of the Matsushita Brothers and the hospital." He handed Zekawa the paper and pen he had just used, his gaze still fixed on the outside.
After a moment, he suddenly asked, "Does Junya really look like Yi Shi?"
It felt as if tiny needles were pricking his palms; Zekawa clenched his hands together, feeling a slight pain. He couldn't see Yeluo Tan's expression and didn't want to; he replied softly, "He looks just like him."
The atmosphere fell into a subtle obscurity. The slight pain began to make Zekawa anxious; he stood up and said, "Call me if you get any news."
Yarou nodded but fell back into his daze.
As Zekawa left, Sakuma Grandma handed him a box of snacks. Feeling somewhat restrained, he asked, "Is Yarou still looking for Yi Shi?"
Sakuma replied with a soft "Mm," her heart aching for both of these children.
He gazed at the window on the second floor, pondering whether Yarou was still staring blankly outside. It seemed he could see a sorrowful gaze in the air, reaching out to someone.
The prickling pain in his palm gradually settled into his heart.
Facing the young man in his early twenties, Longjing Yuanshu felt an almost envious sensation.
Having spent five years in the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department's Violent Crimes Investigation Division Three, he felt as though he was aging rapidly, sometimes even overwhelmed by the cases he encountered.
Now holding the position of Police Inspector, he found little desire for promotion. Yet, the earnestness with which the young man was investigating and reasoning reminded him of his former self.
Longjing watched as Yeluo Tan searched for clues in the room, lost in thought about a series of events that had just unfolded, leaving him bewildered.
