The Hua Mao Building still stood tall in the center of Xi Cheng.
By the time we arrived, it was nearly three in the afternoon. Yang Fan instructed Chen Yin and the others to head to Xinlan Real Estate to discuss matters with their chairman, then he pulled me into the elevator.
"Before that," Yang Fan said, "let's resolve another case first."
Luo Xinyu appeared slightly surprised at our return, saying, "What? Is there still something you need to investigate regarding the deaths of two people from Xin Lan?"
"No," Yang Fan replied. "I already know where the missing proposal is."
"Oh?" Luo Xinyu chuckled. "Just as my uncle said, you truly are a formidable thinker. But can you first tell me how Xin Lan managed to steal the proposal?"
Upon hearing Luo Xinyu's words, Yang Fan smiled and then, to our astonishment, crouched down next to a filing cabinet on the right side of Luo Xinyu's desk. He took out a branch he had broken downstairs and gently pulled it beneath the cabinet.
With a barely audible scraping sound, a document slid out from under the cabinet, printed with "City East Outer Ring Bidding Proposal."
Luo Xinyu stood up in surprise, exclaiming, "How could it be here?"
Yang Fan shrugged.
So when we headed downstairs, Luo Xinyu followed closely behind.
Xinlan Real Estate had already been secured by Chen Yin's team. After greeting the officers at the entrance, we walked inside and entered the chairman's office under the watchful eyes of dozens of Xin Lan employees.
The amiable old Chairman Xin Lan smiled at Luo Xinyu behind us and then shook hands with her.
"Can we talk now?" Chen Yin said somewhat defiantly, addressing the detective.
Yang Fan didn't mind and said something to Xiao He. The latter left the chairman's office and returned a while later, followed by Fan Zhiqiang.
Yang Fan looked at Fan Zhiqiang and said, "You killed He Shuang, didn't you?"
We were taken aback by Yang Fan's sudden accusation, as there had been no evidence linking Fan Zhiqiang to the case prior to this moment.
Fan Zhiqiang was momentarily stunned, then coldly replied, "Can I not sue you for defamation?"
"You cannot," Chen Yin interjected, and I quickly pulled her back.
Yang Fan smiled, his expression unchanged, and said, "If you want to understand the truth of this case, we need to first discuss the earlier incident involving the lost bid proposal from the Lo Family. Wang Ming," he looked at me.
I nodded and recounted all the clues I knew.
Yang Fan continued, "Initially, I focused on how the perpetrator used the power outage to climb up to the twenty-third floor and steal the proposal. However, after thinking about it for a week, I still had no leads. So I considered Xin Lan's unexpected success in winning the bid as a potential explanation for this case." He glanced at Chairman Xin Lan, who smiled back without a care.
"I must say," Yang Fan remarked, "that Xin Lan's security measures were very effective; thus, I still couldn't obtain any useful information. Ultimately, I was able to find the proposal because this case provided me with a clue or reminded me of a concept I learned long ago."
"Concept?" Everyone turned to him, eager for a detailed explanation.
Yang Fan walked over to the window in his office, raised his hand to form a gun gesture, and pointed at a staff member across the way. "For example, if I fired a shot here and that staff member fell to the ground, could it be said that I shot him?"
He answered his own question, "Of course not, because," he tapped the glass with his index finger, producing a crisp sound, "there's a layer of glass!"
I seemed to understand a bit more and said to Yang Fan, "Are you saying...?"
"Exactly," Yang Fan nodded. "Xin Lan's successful bid has nothing to do with the theft of the proposal."
