"Run Away"
In the hospital, Unknown Truth finally saw the Mouse Trap that had injured his leg under the bright lights.
The rusty iron device still bore traces of his blood. The doctor administered a tetanus shot to Unknown Truth.
Officer Jiang fiddled with the Mouse Trap and asked Unknown Truth, "What were you doing there so late?"
Unknown Truth didn't know how to respond and could only say he got lost, turning around until he was completely disoriented and ended up inside.
He had intended to spend just one night in that dilapidated factory and return the next day, but unexpectedly, he encountered such a large Mouse Trap that caught his foot.
He was genuinely terrified at that moment.
Officer Jiang showed no signs of suspicion, simply taking notes before arranging to take Unknown Truth home.
Standing in front of the apartment door, it was already past midnight. Unknown Truth said, "Thank you. But, Officer Jiang, I really didn't expect you to be there today. Do you live around here?"
A momentary stiffness flashed across Officer Jiang's face before he quickly replied, "No, I was patrolling the streets and happened to hear your scream."
Unknown Truth entered the house without revealing any emotion. Exhausted, he leaned back on the sofa, pondering the events of the past few days.
He increasingly felt that an unspeakable secret lay hidden in some corner of this small town in Jiangnan, and that this secret might even be related to Li An's death! Moreover, Officer Jiang was quite strange; he always seemed to run into him...
He wanted to search for some information online, so he took out the laptop left behind by Li An.
At the moment he pulled out the computer, a piece of paper fell out from his backpack. He trembled as he picked it up; the familiar handwriting sent a chill down his spine.
"An, no matter what happens, for my sake, you must not investigate any further. It’s too dangerous here. Leave. Love, Xiao Qin."
This was Li An's handwriting; Unknown Truth would never mistake it! The way she wrote "An," with the character for "woman" always much smaller than the character for "treasure," reminded him of what Li An had said—she wanted to be a little woman who stayed at home in peace.
Unknown Truth clutched the note tightly, as if holding onto a glimmer of hope. He shouted loudly, "Xiao Qin, I know it's you! Why won’t you meet me?"
However, in the deep darkness of the night, no one answered. Li An's warning only fueled his determination to uncover the truth rather than deter him.
Unknown Truth opened the laptop left by Li An and downloaded a "scanner" from the internet.
With a background in science, Unknown Truth never imagined that the hacking knowledge he learned in college would come in handy now. Fortunately, the local police system's firewall was relatively weak.
He quickly connected to the main server and found information regarding Li An and the recent suicides.
He discovered that over the past month, there had been 17 suicide cases throughout the city, and what was most suspicious was that all were handled by Officer Jiang.
This was a significant discovery. Unknown Truth wanted to learn more; the mystery in his heart gradually became clearer, like a jumbled puzzle. He began piecing together fragments of information to form a complete picture.
Yet, it seemed he was always missing the most crucial piece. Unknown Truth fell into deep thought.
Staring blankly at the screen, he suddenly seemed to catch a glimmer of light.
At that moment, his phone rang, and a text message came in.
He hurriedly pulled out his phone and found it was from Li An, containing just two words: "Run now."
He froze, his fingers trembling slightly. Just then, a shadow suddenly appeared on the computer screen—a dark figure was raising a gleaming blade!
Instinctively, he shrank back, and with a loud "crash," the computer was split in two, shards flying everywhere.
Seizing the opportunity, he limped out the door, shouting as he ran, "I know who you are; you can't fool me!"
In the darkness, he seemed to find his direction. The final piece of the puzzle in his mind was close to fitting together. He took a deep breath, trying to calm himself down.
At that moment, his phone rang again.
Shaking, he answered the call and heard a hoarse voice say, "Come find me alone. Perhaps you'll see Li An."
His heart sank sharply, and his voice trembled as he asked, "Where are you?"
There was no answer—only an eerie laugh echoed before the call ended.
