In this summer, trapped in the roar of steam engines, I finally wrapped up my entire high school life in just two days.
Under normal circumstances, this should have been a definitive end. But no one could predict when or how an unexpected event would occur.
Just like now—walking through the school gate with a sense of nostalgia, I saw Hua Yin looking despondent and Hua Yishu wearing a serious expression. That’s when I learned about the incident.
“The deceased was a student at our school named Yu Xin. She was a year above us and had gone to another school to repeat her studies after failing last year's college entrance exam. According to Yu Xin's friends and family, she hasn’t been seen since the college entrance exam ended two days ago. The time of death was around 4 PM yesterday,” Hua Yin explained.
His words didn’t elicit much of a reaction from me; instead, my attention was completely captured by the vibrant photo in front of me. It was a picture of Yu Xin from her life, standing beside a basketball court with a basketball in her arms, her face lit up with a smile, as if she held infinite hopes for the future.
Now, however, she lay cold in the morgue.
“Su Zhen, what are you thinking? Are you even listening to me?” Hua Yin raised his voice when he saw my lack of response. “Hey? Su Zhen? Do you want to hear this?”
“I’m listening,” I replied absentmindedly.
“Good. You need to pay close attention now; this is the most critical part of the case.”
Hua Yin looked at me with an odd expression. “According to the coroner's report, Yu Xin died yesterday afternoon, specifically around 4 PM on June 9th, and the cause of death was drowning. The location where it happened was by the creek outside the back gate of the school.”
“By the creek outside the back gate?” I suddenly looked up. “Isn’t that place…”
“Hold on, let me finish. First, take a look at this.”
Hua Yin brought over a photograph from Hua Yishu.
The photo was taken at the crime scene, where the body had not yet been removed. In the image, Yu Xin was bound and lying on the ground, and more importantly, she was disheveled, clearly a victim of sexual assault.
"Is this a case of rape and murder? It can't be..." I stared at the photograph, my astonishment not stemming from the nature of the case itself but from the eerie similarity to an incident that occurred a year ago at the same location.
"This isn't over yet. Do you remember the brutal methods used by the killer in last year's case?"
Hua Yin rested her chin on one hand while pointing at the photo with the other. "Yu Xin showed signs of having been sexually assaulted, and her left nipple had been cut off. When the body was discovered, she was still wearing her own Black Stockings on her head."
"Ah!" My shock transformed into a rising indignation. "Damn it!"
I slammed my hand on the table. "If I remember correctly, the girl who died last year was..."
"Yes, that's right." After a long silence, Hua Yishu spoke softly. "She also showed signs of sexual assault; her left nipple had been bitten off by the killer, and she too had her own black stockings pulled over her head. This means it could be the same perpetrator, and we still haven't caught that lunatic."
"What? They haven't caught him yet? But that incident happened so long ago!" I was shocked once again by this revelation.
Last year's case had caused quite a stir in high schools across the city before eventually quieting down, as nearly everyone believed that the perverted murderer had been brought to justice.
"Su Zhen, try not to get too worked up," Hua Yin said calmly. "Since he dares to strike again, it means he is currently overconfident. This time we will definitely catch him."
"It's not 'definitely';" Hua Yishu corrected her. "It’s 'must' catch him!"
"What are we going to do now?"
"It's not that simple. You'll understand soon enough. There are many things that the police will handle, and your task is to find clues among the school and the students. Moreover..."
Hua Yishu glanced at Hua Yin. "Hua Yin, since you want to apply to a police academy, you need to start training right now. Although you’ve dealt with some cases before and solved quite a few, those were all scattered and amateurish. From now on, you will undergo systematic training."
"You're planning to apply to a police academy?"
"That's right, hehe. What about you?"
"Me? I haven't decided yet..." This was exactly the choice I dreaded facing.
Because once I made a decision, it could change my life forever.
