"Here, this is for you." Hua Yin tossed a thick bag of documents onto my desk, and I turned around, looking at him in confusion.
"This contains the information on the current case and last year's case. You'll definitely be surprised after you read it." I picked up the bag, feeling its considerable weight.
I dumped all the documents onto my desk, only to find that Hua Yin had given me a chaotic pile of photocopies, forcing me to spend time sorting them out.
"Finally got it organized. You really have nothing better to do than to keep me busy, huh? So many disorganized files." I wiped the beads of sweat forming on my forehead.
Hua Yin opened the study door and peeked outside. "Mmm, it smells great. Your mom must be making her famous chicken soup. Looks like I'm going to mooch off you again tonight. You keep at it; I'm going to see what's for dinner."
I put away my reference books for college applications into the drawer so I could focus on the large stack of documents in front of me. To clarify my thoughts, I decided to start with last year's case.
The first document was a forensic autopsy report:
Municipal Criminal Investigation Team
Forensic Department
Forensic Autopsy Pathology Report
Autopsy Number: 2277
Commissioning Unit (Person): Municipal Criminal Investigation Team
Reason for Commission: Determine the cause of death of Wang Keyi
Commission Date: June 12, 2008
Autopsy Date: June 12, 2008
Report Date: June 13, 2008
I. Case Summary: Attached document.
II. Pathological Examination:
1. External Examination:
The body of a girl was found, measuring 166 cm in length, with normal development and good nutrition. Rigor mortis had dissipated, and postmortem lividity was pale, with the skin outside the areas of lividity appearing white. There were petechial hemorrhages in the conjunctiva, and the skin was pale and shriveled, with the lips and fingertips exhibiting cyanosis. The skin was swollen, wrinkled, and peeling. Soil and aquatic plants from the crime scene were found in the oral and nasal cavities, as well as in her hands and under her nails. The left nipple was bitten off, indicating signs of sexual assault, and male semen was found inside her body.
I felt that this was enough information for now, so I briefly skimmed through the internal examination section. As expected, I found no useful clues there. I flipped a page and went straight to the summary:
The girl died from drowning and had been sexually assaulted prior to her death (semen samples have been submitted). The estimated time of death was around 4 PM on June 8, 2008, with a margin of error not exceeding half an hour. The left nipple of the deceased had been bitten off, showing signs of sexual assault.
After reading this forensic report, I pulled out two photographs of Wang Keyi from the stack of documents.
One was from the crime scene, similar to the one of Yu Xin; the other was a photo of Wang Keyi during her life, dressed in a white tight-fitting dress that made her appear lively and full of energy.
The juxtaposition of these two photographs—one depicting life and the other death—created a stark contrast akin to color versus black and white.
I couldn't help but reflect on how fragile life is; sometimes we leave before we even get a glimpse of the future.
Next, I picked up the second document, which contained a report on the case progression and an investigation into the deceased:
The victim, Wang Keyi, was a graduate of Class 08 from City Second Middle School. At the time of her death, she was on her way to take the college entrance examination at City Second Middle School, accompanied by two classmates (details to follow).
Through extensive investigation, the circumstances surrounding the victim's encounter with danger were roughly as follows:
On June 8, 2008, at 2 PM, Wang Keyi and two classmates headed to the Second High School of the city to take the final English exam of their college entrance examination. Since her home was not far from the school, the three walked together along a small path leading to the back gate of the school. Due to its remote location, that path rarely saw any people or vehicles. Along the way, they encountered the assailant, who was reportedly armed with a Knife Set. Except for the victim, Wang Keyi, the other two classmates managed to escape from the assailant's grasp, while she met with a tragic fate.
After the incident, the two survivors, eager to attend their exam, failed to report the situation to the school and police in a timely manner. As a result, both the school and law enforcement were unable to promptly recognize the severity of the situation and take action…
