"That's right, the simplest," Zhao Yi said with a hint of approval in his smile. "Everyone has their own selfish motives; no one is exempt. It's not just high school students; even middle schoolers these days are quite complicated. It's just that the extent to which each person is influenced by their selfishness varies. And Wang Keyi is the student I've seen who is least affected by this."
"Hmm... so how is the relationship between Wang Keyi, Yu Xin, and Mei Tiantian?" I continued to probe.
"Their relationship has always been good. I've always thought of the two of them as good kids. It's just..." Zhao Yi's voice trailed off.
"Just what?" I pressed him.
"Just that the other two are not as good as her," Zhao Yi sighed.
"Is it because of last year's incident? Yu Xin and Mei Tiantian only informed the school and the police about Wang Keyi possibly being in danger after the exam," I asked tentatively.
"Yes, it's because of that incident that my opinion of the other two changed significantly." Zhao Yi's hand holding the photo trembled slightly, and his eyes seemed a bit misty. "Indeed, the college entrance examination is important. But how could they abandon their friend for an exam?" He shook his head. "When I found out about this, I scolded them harshly and didn't let them attend the final class gathering. But later, I realized I couldn't blame them entirely. If anyone is to blame, it’s the current education system that makes them think that an exam could be more important than a person's life!"
Education, again with education. The incident that happened in that cursed bathroom at R Middle School was similar. In the cases I've dealt with alongside Hua Yin during these high school years, it seems that anything related to schools and students often stems from this sad state of education.
"Do you know what happened to the other two afterward?" I asked further.
"Maybe it's karma; both of their English scores were terrible, and they ended up failing the exam. Afterward, it seems they both went to different schools to repeat a year," Zhao Yi said with a wry smile.
"Did they have any contact with you or anyone else afterward?"
"Not with me. As for whether they contacted other classmates, I wouldn't know. But I think after that incident, everyone in the class started to distance themselves from them," Zhao Yi shook his head.
"Oh, alright. Then let's leave it at that. Teacher Zhao, do you have any classes tomorrow or the day after?"
"No, since that incident, I've applied to the school to reduce my teaching hours," Zhao Yi sighed.
"Oh, could you give me your address? I might need to bother you again about some things," I asked, feeling a bit embarrassed.
"Well..." Zhao Yi hesitated for a moment, then took out a pen and paper from his pocket and wrote down an address for me. "You're welcome to visit anytime. By the way, you mentioned something that happened the day before yesterday... what was it?"
I glanced at the address; it was for a residential complex near the main river of the city. It wasn't exactly a high-end place, and compared to other teachers at the school, Zhao Yi seemed to have a limited income.
"I think you won't have to wait long for someone to come looking for you. They'll tell you," I paused, noticing through the nearby window that Hua Yishu's police car had arrived. "It's about Wang Keyi."
"...That incident hasn't been forgotten yet?" Zhao Yi looked at me and then at the photo in his hand, appearing somewhat melancholic. "Times are progressing, yet some things fade away without us realizing it. She is a victim of this distorted era..."
After leaving Zhao Yi's office, I deliberately took a longer route out of the school because I wasn't ready to face Hua Yishu and the others just yet. Later, I visited the school where Yu Xin and Mei Tiantian were repeating their studies to gather some information about their time there. When I returned home in the evening, Hua Yin was already sitting on my sofa watching television.
"How did it go? Any progress on your end?" Hua Yin asked as soon as she saw me come in.
"Not much to report," I said as I collapsed onto the nearby sofa, feeling utterly exhausted after a long day.
"I had quite an eventful day!" Hua Yin exclaimed animatedly. "Come to my study; I have something to tell you."
