Stepping out of the hospital room, the Criminal Police Captain said with dissatisfaction, “The sooner we get information, the more confident we’ll be in catching the Suspect.”
“We sympathize with your unfortunate situation,” the girl mimicked his earlier tone and made a face. “You police officers only think about catching criminals, while as doctors, we have to consider our patients. Don’t you think her reaction just now was a bit too calm given the circumstances?”
“You mean…”
“She clearly hasn’t accepted the reality yet; she’s in denial… and you expect her to recall what happened at that moment… you really have no sense of empathy…”
“…I just want to catch the person who harmed her quickly. Doesn’t she want that?”
“What difference does it make if you catch him? Can it change the fact that she has lost her sight?”
Xin Zi shot a glance at Yan Qin, who finally fell silent. “Give her a chance to breathe. I’ll keep an eye on her until she’s able to speak about what happened.”
“Why are you getting involved in the police case again?”
Xin Zi was feeding water to the patient when Wei Jun quietly entered and pulled her aside to speak softly.
“I’m not; I’m just taking care of the patient,” Xin Zi replied gently.
Wei Jun looked sympathetically at the girl on the bed, who seemed unaware, staring down lost in thought. He said to Xin Zi, “That Criminal won’t come back to the hospital to hurt anyone again, right? Is there any danger?”
“Of course not,” Xin Zi reassured him. “You should head out now; Yan Qin and the director said I should take care of her specifically. All the Intern duties are on you now. Are you free enough for that? Go on, go!”
With no choice, Wei Jun squeezed his girlfriend's hand and gently opened the door to leave.
“Was that your boyfriend just now?” Xin Zi asked as she brought the cup of water to the patient’s lips. The girl shook her head but suddenly spoke up. Until now, they had only exchanged simple responses and had never truly communicated.
"Hey, how did you know?" Xin Zi asked, a bit surprised.
"It's in the way you speak," the girl seemed to laugh. "He really cares about you."
"Yeah. What about you? Do you have someone who cares about you?" Xin Zi asked softly.
The girl lowered her head.
Seeing that she wasn't going to answer, the Intern smiled and said, "My last name is Shen, and my name is Xin Zi. What about you?"
"I'm called Xiao Qing."
"Xiao Qing... that's a lovely name. What's your last name?"
The girl shook her head. "I don't have a last name."
In fact, Yan Qin had already told Xin Zi that the police had not found the girl's family. It was as if she had sprouted out of thin air in this city, completely without origin.
Xin Zi looked at Xiao Qing, noticing a hint of barely perceptible pity on the usually indifferent face of the Female Intern.
"Hey," she suddenly changed the subject in a casual tone, "I've been blind before too."
The seemingly offhand remark made Xiao Qing's body tremble slightly.
But the other continued talking, "That was when I was twelve. I did something not very nice to someone else and faced retaliation. That kid picked up a brick from the ground in anger and threw it at my head. Although my head was fine, I temporarily lost my sight due to a severe concussion.
During that time, I lived quite comfortably. My cousin already cared for me a lot, and after I couldn't see, he stayed by my side even more—everything was handed to me on a silver platter. Unfortunately, it didn't last long; I regained my sight. To cling to my beloved cousin a little longer, I pretended to be blind for a few more days, but when he found out, he scolded me fiercely..."
"Oh..." the girl replied coldly. "But how long did that good time last for you?"
"Well... probably about three weeks..."
"I wonder if you'd still talk about this experience so fondly if you could never see again?"
"I don't know. After all, I'll be able to see again soon. The sunlight, the grass, and my Cousin's face when he pouts—everything will feel so familiar when I see it again..."
The girl lowered her head.
"Please leave..."
"Huh?"
"Leave..."
"Aren't you going to drink any water?"
"Leave!"
Xin Zi looked at Xiao Qing's increasingly pale face, which was a result of her anger—she bit her lip tightly, her fingers trembling as she pointed toward the door. The Female Intern stood up quietly, glancing back at the injured expression that the girl had shown for the first time since being admitted, and walked out silently.
"Wei Jun," she approached her boyfriend, who was furiously writing in the medical record in the office, "I think it would be better for us to switch tasks..."
