Before long, Xiao Qing was brought into the interrogation room, where Roth was waiting for her.
“Look,” the girl said with a smile at the monitor, “the complexity in his gaze towards her—how could he possibly be innocent?”
Yan Qin Qing cleared her throat, and the girl looked up to see Chen Moxin entering the monitoring room.
She exchanged a brief greeting with Yan Qin and then focused intently on the screen. Xin Zi sensed the tremor beneath the woman's calm exterior.
“It’s you, isn’t it?” Xiao Qing broke the silence first.
“I don’t know you. Who are you? Why are you accusing me?” The man replied coldly.
“It’s you. You ruined me. Why did you do that?” The girl’s voice sharpened. A look of unease crossed the man’s face.
“Don’t talk nonsense! You have no proof! Your eyes can’t see, what evidence do you have that I blinded you?”
“Then what evidence do you have to prove it wasn’t you?” The girl retorted sharply. “I heard you went to the bookstore—who can prove that?”
Roth’s expression darkened: “I didn’t lie to you; I haven’t lied to anyone. Believe it or not, that’s up to you!” He turned his face towards the monitor, his expression conveying that there was no need for confrontation. It was a face of unwavering resolve.
Roth stepped out. Chen Moxin immediately rushed forward. Her husband took her hand.
“Don’t worry, I’m fine. I didn’t do anything.”
Anyone who saw his demeanor would not doubt that he was speaking truthfully to his wife. But Xiao Qing could see nothing at all.
She stumbled out of the interrogation room shortly after.
Hearing Roth's assurance to his wife, she let out a sharp laugh. "You didn't do anything! That night, you really did nothing at all?"
Roth suddenly turned around.
Everyone saw the look of utter disdain he directed at Xiao Qing. "I don't know you!" the man said coldly.
The girl quickly flipped through the files on the table. Soon, she found what she was looking for and pointed at it, smiling at the Criminal Police Captain. "If I were you, I would definitely look into this closely."
Yan Qin glanced over and frowned. "You can't just rely on this..."
"You know what I'm thinking, right? I also know what you're thinking," Xin Zi said calmly. "Trust me, there is a connection between them. Their conversation has already made everything clear."
"What do you mean?"
"They have a physical relationship." The girl pointed to a line in the document. "The gynecological examination shows that Xiao Qing was not violated that night, but her hymen had old tears. She is only 19 years old, wandering alone in Shanghai. It's not because this city is special; it's because he is here. And he is everything to her."
"Your speculation is too arbitrary; what's your basis for that..."
"Basis?" The girl looked up at the ceiling. "A feeling."
"..."
"If she wasn't so familiar with a person's presence, how could she perceive his existence in a situation where she couldn't see? Just based on a fleeting moment of connection? Do you believe that? I don't."
"…"
"And does this count as… 'It's you. You ruined me. Why did you do that?' 'I didn't lie to you; I didn't lie to anyone. Whether you believe it or not is up to you!'" The girl mimicked their conversation from that day.
"What you mean is… Roth didn't want Xiao Qing to ruin his family, so he denied their relationship?"
"Yes. He doesn't think he ever made any promises to her."
"So he blinded her so she wouldn't recognize him? That's absurd!" The girl smiled faintly.
"You know…" she said in a teasing tone, "there are countless ways for one person to silence another. Blinding her eyes? With two Lead Wires? Can you imagine that scene? I can't." The girl lowered her head. "I can only imagine a more brutal and appalling way…"
The Criminal Police Captain completely misunderstood her meaning.
"I have just one last thing I want to ask you to help with."
"What is it?"
"That night, although we don't know what happened with Roth, why not consider it from another angle—what exactly happened in this city that night?"
