Clap! Clap! Clap!
Zhang He suddenly heard applause and turned to see Tian Xu and Li Jun standing at the door of their dormitory, smiling at them. From their expressions, it was clear they had overheard the previous conversation.
"Truly impressive, Zhang He. Your knowledge is remarkable," Tian Xu said as he stepped into the room. He looked to be around thirty years old and worked as a criminal investigator. He had met Zhang He after the latter inadvertently solved a serial murder case last year, and since then, he frequently sought Zhang He out, his persistence rivaling that of a brick wall.
The man behind him was fair-skinned and had delicate features that resembled those of a woman.
The man extended his right hand toward Zhang He and politely introduced himself, "Hello, I'm Li Jun, a forensic doctor. I've long admired your reputation."
Zhang He showed no intention of shaking his hand, merely glancing at Li Jun. The hand that hung awkwardly in the air was left in limbo, creating an uncomfortable silence.
Fortunately, Hou Bin was quick-witted and stepped forward to shake hands with Li Jun, saying, "This guy always looks like he's just lost his father—don’t mind him. Please have a seat. By the way, what brings you here to see him?"
Tian Xu unceremoniously pulled out a chair and sat down with a grin. "What good could it be to seek out Zhang He? Are we inviting him to a wedding? Of course not! We need him to explain something!"
"What is it? Ordinary cases won't interest this weirdo!"
Hou Bin knew Zhang He well; at that moment, Zhang He was completely oblivious to the people in the room, lost in his own world of magic tricks. One moment he produced two coins, and the next they vanished entirely.
Li Jun also took a seat across from Hou Bin and said, "Actually, I came to find Zhang He because there's a strange case I can't explain. I wanted to ask for his thoughts on it because I heard from Tian Xu that Zhang He's thinking is broader than most people's. There’s something about..."
"Low-Risk Depression!" Tian Xu interjected.
"Yes, exactly that. So I wanted to know if Zhang He would be willing to help," Li Jun spoke with a gentle tone, very different from Tian Xu's straightforwardness; he was polite and composed.
Hou Bin burst into laughter. "What Low-Risk Depression? It’s just a fancy way of saying someone’s got issues—crazy! Ha!" After chuckling for a moment, he noticed Zhang He glancing at him from the corner of his eye and immediately fell silent.
Li Jun clearly found Zhang He's behavior quite unusual. He glanced at Tian Xu and then at Hou Bin, unable to comprehend how the two of them could be friends with Zhang He.
Perhaps only people like them, who seemed carefree, could tolerate Zhang He's peculiar temperament.
"Don't worry, go ahead and speak. Even though this kid looks distracted, he's actually quite interested in strange matters! Just say what you need to say; I guarantee he's listening," Tian Xu said as he pulled out a cigarette from his pocket and lit it without a care for his surroundings.
Li Jun looked skeptically at Zhang He, who was playing with some magic tricks on the table, and began his story.
If I hadn't experienced this myself, I would never have believed that such incredible things could happen in this world.
I still remember that day; it was rainy, and the light drizzle had started early in the morning.
I’ve never been fond of rain, and that day I felt particularly uncomfortable. Oh, right, it was three months ago, on May 22nd.
That morning, I woke up quite late—around nine o'clock. After taking my time to get dressed and brush my teeth, I realized I would definitely be late for work. So I called my office and asked my assistant Xiao Liu to inform Old Zhang that I would arrive later than usual. This gave me an extra morning to leisurely enjoy breakfast.
I drove to Hong Ruixing on Dunhua Road in Yangpu District for breakfast. Coincidentally, if I hadn’t gone there that morning, perhaps I wouldn’t have discovered what happened next.
I ordered a bowl of noodles and chose a seat in a quiet corner. To my surprise, when I looked up, I saw a familiar figure walking past the glass window in front of me.
“Chen Wenting!” I called out involuntarily.
Chen Wenting was wearing a white top paired with a short skirt and appeared to be in quite a hurry.
Upon hearing my voice, she turned around to look at me, her expression one of surprise. But for some reason, as I recall that moment now, there was a hint of fear in her eyes.
“What are you doing here? Don’t you live on Zhongyuan Road?” I rushed out of the restaurant to stand in front of Chen Wenting, eager to catch up. After all, we were high school classmates.
"Um... I'm here to buy something..." Her voice was a bit hesitant, as if she was hiding something.
If I had asked more thoroughly at that moment, perhaps the tragic event that followed could have been avoided. Looking back now, I regret my carelessness.
We chatted casually for a few minutes. She mentioned that her sister lived nearby (even though she had just said she came to buy something), and that she would go back after checking on her sister. When I asked which neighborhood her sister lived in, she couldn't clarify. I thought it best not to pry into someone else's personal matters.
"What do you do for work now?" I asked.
"I'm a nurse. What about you?" she replied.
"I'm a forensic doctor." I still remember the expression on her face when she heard my profession. How should I describe it? It was a mix of surprise and fear.
"What's wrong?" I inquired.
"Nothing. I have to go now, see you," she said hurriedly as she bid farewell.
"Goodbye." I watched her leave.
Perhaps at this point, you still don't know what strange event I'm referring to.
Don't worry, the main topic is coming up soon.
