The Yanjing Silver Goose Company had gone too far. With less than an hour until the performance began, besides the leaders and guests, there were tens of thousands of live audience members eagerly waiting for their idols to appear. In two minutes, a breathless Hua Mei rushed over, flustered.
At the newly built Hongting Hotel on the central cross street of Baliushu Township, the entire third floor had been temporarily requisitioned by the town government to serve as a resting area and preparation center for performers.
Upon arriving at the hotel entrance, Deputy Director of the Cultural Bureau Hou Yong and the township cultural station head Gao Bin greeted them. Without needing an introduction about the situation, they led Qin Chizian, Chen Caihong, and Reporter Hua straight to the third floor. Both men had faced their share of setbacks and were seething with frustration as they reached the corner of the staircase on the third floor. Gao Bin walked ahead and bumped into someone, both exclaiming in surprise.
"Are you in a hurry to die? How do you walk?" a man's voice shouted angrily.
"I'm sorry! I'm really in a rush!" Gao Bin hurriedly apologized, his eyes only focused on the agent's resting room.
"Being in a rush makes you special? This godforsaken place is full of bumpkins! In this impoverished land with no money to spare. Trying to imitate culture—what are these conditions?" The man grumbled, his expression sour. He then shouted loudly, "Security! Security! There's an issue here. Where are those useless guards?"
Qin Chizian frowned. He scrutinized the man; he appeared to be around thirty years old—handsome and tall—with a somewhat familiar face. He recognized him from television as a singer but couldn't recall his name. He remembered that he had gotten into trouble for drug use recently.
Gao Bin looked up and immediately recognized him. "Oh! Mr. Chu! I'm so sorry! I truly didn't mean it; I was looking for our manager, Manager Gou. Please forgive me!"
Qin Chizian finally remembered; this guy was Chu Yunfei, the lead singer of Silver Goose Band who sang "Love Without Words." His fame had been rising over the past two years, but it seemed his temper and manners needed some work.
"Gao Station Head, let's go!" Qin Chizian said.
"Hey! How can you talk like that? You bump into someone and just want to leave? Who do you think you are?" The singer named Chu seemed offended and shouted back. At that moment, two burly men emerged from an inner room and barked, "Who bumped into someone? Who did it?" They approached aggressively, ready to throw Qin Chizian and his group out.
Qin Chizian called out downstairs, "Hey! Send up two people!" Hearing his voice, Zhi Yong and Yang Guangjun quickly brought four or five fully armed officers upstairs. Given that it was a significant event today, everyone was dressed formally, which added some authority to their presence.
As they arrived on the scene, they stood protectively in front of Qin Chizian. They were loyal to Peng Wei and knew that Qin Chizian was Peng Wei's "big brother." Being young and hot-headed themselves, they didn't care who anyone was; anyone daring to trouble Director Qin would be dealt with harshly.
"What do you want? Is bumping into someone such a big deal? Besides, he already apologized and has urgent business," Qin Chizian calmly said as he pushed past Zhi Yong. "It's all about helping each other out."
Seeing this situation unfold and recognizing Qin Chizian's extraordinary demeanor made Chu Yunfei hesitate slightly but he did not show weakness on his face. Just then, the door to the front room swung open, and many people poured out led by a fat white man who immediately shouted:
"What’s going on here? What do you want with my actor? Are you trying to threaten our performance?"
His words instantly threw everything into chaos.
Qin Chizian saw that Fat White was followed by more than a dozen people, including several celebrities invited for the event, two of whom were top-tier female stars. At this moment, they were all made up, making it impossible to tell what they looked like without makeup.
Among them was a singer named Fu Hongxue, who had shot to fame during this year's Spring Festival Gala. From the current situation, aside from her somewhat reserved expression, she was indeed very alluring: dressed in a round-neck white long down jacket, with a long neck and her hair elegantly tied up high. She was tall, even taller than the two men in front of her, standing out in the crowd like a crane among chickens.
Gao Bin smiled at Fat White and said, "Mr. Gou, this is our person in charge from Baliushu, here to discuss transportation fees with everyone."
A middle-aged man stepped out from behind Fat White. He wore brown-tinted glasses and had long hair tied back in a ponytail. His tall stature gave him an imposing presence.
He glanced disdainfully at Qin Chizian and then scanned Gao Bin, Hou Yong, and Chen Caihong before saying, "We don't need to discuss this; just bring out the transportation fees first. Otherwise, there's nothing else to talk about!"
As soon as he spoke, the atmosphere became tense. Gao Bin and Chen Caihong both looked at Qin Chizian.
Qin Chizian remained calm. "Are you sure you're responsible for what you've said?"
Fat White raised an arrogant eyebrow. "What a joke! Wenyuan? Baliushu's person in charge? Pah! If you don't pay the transportation fees, don't even think about letting our people perform on stage. And it's not 10,000 and 30,000 anymore; it's 30,000 and 50,000 now!"
He then introduced himself: "I am Gou Fuqiang, the manager of Silver Goose Team. This is our team leader, the well-known musician and artist Mr. Xie Junfei."
Chen Caihong pulled Qin Chizian aside. "Look at you! You should have just agreed to them back then; now… it’s even more passive!"
Qin Chizian suppressed her anger. "Director Chen, do you think this is just about money? They are deliberately trying to squeeze us!"
Chen Caihong replied, "But what can you do? If the leaders blame us…"
Qin Chizian raised her voice. "I will take responsibility!"
At that moment, all eyes turned to her. Qin Chizian smiled faintly and looked at the man with the ponytail. "You are Team Leader Xie, right? If you say you won't perform without extra payment, I can answer you right now!"
"You?" Team Leader Xie scoffed dismissively. "Who do you think you are? I've met plenty of mayors and governors. You're just a small fry! What qualifications do you have to negotiate with me? I'll tell you straight: the transportation fees have gone up to 30,000 and 50,000."
With that, he led his group to turn away. Hou Yong, Gao Bin, and Chen Caihong's expressions changed drastically. Chen Caihong hurried after him, saying, "Mr. Xie, let's talk some more!" But he showed no sign of giving them any face.
"Director Qin!" Gao Bin's eyes brimmed with tears as his facial muscles twitched uncontrollably.
