"Well, since we're already married, what's the point of dwelling on these things?"
Upon hearing this, Xiao Yao felt a sense of relief.
Whether they meet or not doesn't really matter; after all, it's just one side of the story. What impression could one have of a girl? It must be just a vague shadow, and any temperament or character traits must have long been forgotten.
Thinking this way, Xiao Yao's heart calmed down a bit.
The days of traveling were just the same day after day, nearly indistinguishable from one another.
After more than twenty consecutive days of relentless travel, they finally arrived at the Beijing suburbs. The weather was just like He Yu had said, entering the Dog Days, the hottest days of the year.
However, even during these hottest days, Xiao Yao found it much cooler compared to modern times. At least in the evenings, there was a slight cool breeze that felt quite refreshing.
In the evening, He Yu carried Xiao Yao down from the carriage and said, "If we stay outside one more night today, we'll head back to the manor tomorrow. Then we can finally rest well."
"Am I going back to the Wangfu with you?" Xiao Yao looked up at He Yu.
"Of course! Where else would you want to go?" He Yu patted Xiao Yao's head as if it were obvious. "You're my daughter-in-law now; naturally, you should come back with me. I've already instructed someone to prepare your room and courtyard for you. You can move in right away."
"But we haven't gotten married yet," Xiao Yao blinked.
"Getting married is just a formality," He Yu said innocently as he looked at Xiao Yao.
Xiao Yao shook her head and replied, "But you're a prince! It wouldn't look good for your reputation in the capital."
"Are you concerned about me?" He Yu leaned closer to Xiao Yao. Although they had shared some physical closeness during their time in the carriage, this kind of intimacy in front of others felt like a first. Xiao Yao blushed and pushed his head away. "Well, sort of."
Xiao Yao was shy, and He Yu knew this well. Satisfied, he straightened up and stopped teasing her; after all, he didn't want to upset her.
At that moment, Xiao Mo Yi got out of the carriage and said, "Why don't you let her stay with me for now? When it's time for the wedding, she can leave from my house; it would be more convenient."
He Yu frowned and was about to object when Xiao Yao tugged at his sleeve. He turned to look at her, and she shook her head. "I think that's fine. Isn't your elder brother's residence not far from yours?"
"It’s not far, but..." There was still some distance; after all, He Yu was a prince while Xiao Mo Yi was merely an official who had just arrived in the capital. Even though the Xiao family was wealthy and had spent a considerable amount on a house for Xiao Mo Yi in Beijing, it was impossible for it to be too close to a royal family member's residence.
Of course, Xiao Yao understood this principle. She said, "It's fine, anyway, I'm getting married soon, so I might as well stay at Elder Brother's place for now."
Xiao Mo Yi chimed in, "Your Highness, you hold a high position and are favored by the Emperor, so you naturally don't fear some gossip. However, my sister has just arrived in the capital. If she acts without restraint, it might tarnish her reputation. After all, she is an unmarried young lady and is quite sensitive about such matters. If this causes her to be gloomy in the future, wouldn't that be counterproductive?"
I thought that once we arrived in the capital, I could protect her completely, but this first matter...
He Yu closed his eyes for a moment, thought about Xiao Yao, and then realized there were still many things he hadn't done.
Although He Yu usually didn't care about the personal gossip in the capital, he still had to consider it. Reluctantly, he agreed, "Alright then, it won't be long anyway. For now, let's keep my Daughter-in-law at your place. You must take good care of her; if she loses even a hair, I'll hold you accountable!"
Xiao Yao couldn't help but laugh and cry at the same time. "He's my Elder Brother! My real brother! How could he let anything happen to me?"
"That doesn't matter," He Yu said seriously. "As long as you're not in front of me, I won't feel at ease!"
Xiao Yao and Xiao Mo Yi exchanged glances and both laughed out loud. Xiao Mo Yi stepped forward and bowed slightly, saying, "Of course I will take good care of my sister. When the time comes, I will definitely return her to Your Highness safe and sound!"
"That's more like it," He Yu nodded in satisfaction.
The night was quiet.
He Yu, who had been sound asleep, suddenly opened his eyes wide. Instinctively rolling over on the bed, he heard a sharp sound and turned to see a sharp dagger embedded in the bedpost, glinting coldly in the dim light.
Immediately after that, sounds of fighting came from outside. The lights in the courtyard flickered on as someone shouted, "Catch the assassin!"
An assassin?!
Xiao Yao's heart tightened. Could they be here to assassinate He Yu? Just as this thought crossed her mind, the door was kicked open from the outside. He Yu rushed in hurriedly and hugged Xiao Yao tightly. "Are you alright?"
"I'm fine," Xiao Yao shook her head.
Even though Xiao Yao said this, He Yu was still worried. He looked her up and down before letting out a long sigh of relief.
He pulled Xiao Yao into his arms and asked with a light smile, "Are you scared?"
Xiao Yao tightly grasped He Yu's collar and softly said, "With you here, I'm not afraid." Xiao Yao felt He Yu's body stiffen for a moment, then a pleasant light laugh came from above her head, "I love hearing that."
Even with assassins around, seeing He Yu so relaxed made Xiao Yao's initially anxious heart gradually calm down. She asked, "Was that person here to assassinate you?"
"Otherwise?" He Yu replied nonchalantly, as if chatting with Xiao Yao about everyday matters. "This house was arranged by the Crown Prince's people in the Beijing Suburbs. There are really not many who can find this place." Thinking of this, He Yu squinted his eyes. "It seems someone couldn't wait; I haven't even returned to the capital yet."
"Why?" Xiao Yao's heart tightened a bit. "Isn't the capital peaceful lately?"
He Yu sneered coldly, "The capital has never been peaceful."
Hearing this from He Yu, Xiao Yao began to understand. She recalled her time in the modern company she worked for, where the higher up one went, the more intense the scheming became. Even employees like them could occasionally feel the bloodshed and turmoil, such as when a mid-level manager suddenly got replaced, leading to many others being let go.
However, back then, these were just rumors; now it was real-life combat with knives drawn...
Thinking of this made Xiao Yao instinctively shrink further into He Yu's embrace.
