Chapter 1: Traitor Chasing the Wind
Inside the palace.
More than a month ago, those who escorted Wen Qingyu into the Imperial Tomb were now all brought to the palace.
The flickering lights cast a half-lit shadow on the face of the King seated at the top, his bandaged hand gently stroking the jade hairpin that had been re-gilded.
Zhang Gonggong, holding a whisk, stepped forward and asked loudly, "Who helped Consort Yu with her burial?"
A Qingyi Palace Maid crawled out on her knees, "It was... it was me."
"Explain clearly what happened that day."
The maid, frightened, stumbled over her words, "After I helped the lady comb... comb her hair and change her clothes, I personally saw her placed into the stone coffin. When we were about to seal the coffin, His Majesty's personal shadow guard came to deliver an edict. The Emperor had something to leave for the lady and asked us to step back. Then... then when we entered the room again, the stone coffin had already... already been sealed."
Even though Yan Zhi Xi pretended to be calm, he couldn't help but stand up abruptly upon hearing this. "How do you know he is my personal shadow guard?"
"Because he held a royal token granted by His Majesty," the maid trembled. "Please spare me, Your Majesty. I am telling the truth; I beg for your mercy."
After the maid was dragged away, Yan Zhi Xi's teeth clenched tightly.
He called out into the shadows, "Chase the wind."
A black figure leaped in and knelt before Yan Zhi Xi. "Your Majesty, Lord Chasing Wind has been missing for a month."
As expected, it was his most trusted shadow guard leader who had taken away Qing'er...
"Why did you not report this?" Yan Zhi Xi asked in a deep voice, his eyes filled with coldness.
"I know my crime, please punish me, Your Majesty."
Yan Zhi Xi sneered, "You cherish brotherhood, but when Chasing Wind fled, he did not consider the lives of you brothers."
"I know my crime, please punish me," the shadow guard mechanically repeated.
Yan Zhi Xi looked at the shadow guard's expression of resignation for a long while before deciding to spare those shadow guards who had sheltered Chasing Wind. Although to him, Chasing Wind's actions were unforgivable, if it weren't for him, perhaps Qing'er would already be dead.
"Make it known that from today onward, Chasing Wind is no longer the leader of the shadow guards. All shadow guards are to fully capture Chasing Wind."
Outside Yiyun Valley, heavy snow fell in flurries, but inside the valley, it was warm as spring.
By the babbling stream, a girl in green was washing clothes with a wooden basin by the water's edge. Behind her, sounds of rustling came from the bamboo forest.
The girl dropped her wooden mallet, stood up, and happily shouted, "Brother, you're back!"
As soon as she finished speaking, a Black-Clad Man leaped down from the treetops with the grace of a swallow. He held a bag of food in one hand and a steaming roasted chicken in the other.
The man glanced at the wooden house beside him and asked, "How is she today?"
The girl wrinkled her nose cutely and complained, "Brother, as soon as you left the valley, I worried that you would be chased by the Dog Emperor and that something might happen to you, but you only worry about Sister Qingyu. You're so biased."
The man shot a glance at the girl and tossed a roasted chicken into her arms. "I bought this for you."
"Brother, I knew you cared about me the most," the girl said happily. "Sister Qingyu isn't feeling well today; she got tired after eating and is resting in the house now."
For the past month, he and his sister Rui Xi had put in a lot of effort to pull Wen Qingyu back from the brink of death after she had been poisoned into a state of false death. Hearing Rui Xi say that she wasn't feeling well made him worry.
After thinking for a moment, the man walked toward the wooden house by the creek.
He knocked on the door but received no response, so he pushed it open.
Wen Qingyu lay quietly on the wooden bed, with sunlight streaming in through the window and falling on her white hair.
The man's brow furrowed slightly. Although most of the poison in Wen Qingyu's body had been expelled and she would eventually recover completely, her white hair remained unchanged.
