Chapter 4: A Difficult Choice
The sound of knocking interrupted Wen Qingyu's chaotic thoughts.
"Who is it?" Wen Qingyu tightened her grip on the dagger under her pillow and asked warily.
"It's me." Chen Yan's hoarse voice came through the crack of the door. "You didn't eat much tonight, so I brought you some food."
Wen Qingyu put on her clothes, got out of bed, and opened the door to let Chen Yan in.
"Thank you, Brother Chen."
Wen Qingyu looked at the pastries on the table: Almond Crisp, Rose Cake, Crispy Pastry. Her heart skipped a beat, but she smiled lightly and said, "These are all flavors I used to love."
"What a coincidence." Chen Yan's expression remained calm. "I just stopped by the pastry shop at the entrance and happened to find these left over. I bought one of each; if you like them, feel free to eat more."
His words were flawless. Wen Qingyu recalled that before checking into the inn, she had seen a pastry shop nearby. With other worries on her mind, she didn't think too deeply about it.
With lingering concerns, Wen Qingyu ate two pastries but found she couldn't eat any more.
Seeing this, Chen Yan thoughtfully poured her a cup of hot tea. "Drink some tea to soothe your throat."
"Thank you."
“Rui Xi, you don't have to be so polite.”
Chen Yan slightly lowered his head, a hint of melancholy flashing across his face. Wen Qingyu did not notice.
The atmosphere fell silent for a moment, and the moon outside was at its zenith. Chen Yan had no reason to stay any longer, so he stood up to take his leave: “Rui Xi, you should rest. I’ll be going now.”
He had only taken two steps when Wen Qingyu called out to him, “Brother Chen, can you stay and chat with me a bit longer?”
“Sure.”
Wen Qingyu had anticipated his response. Although they had known each other for a short time, this man always cared for her meticulously and never refused any of her requests.
“What do you want to talk about?” Chen Yan sat back down, his gaze fixed intently on Wen Qingyu.
Wen Qingyu pondered for a long time before figuring out how to begin.
“Actually, I was supposed to go to the Shu Region with my missing friend to look for my second brother, but from what I heard today, it seems that the Shu Region is in chaos now…”
Wen Qingyu clenched her dress with both hands, unsure of how to express her feelings.
“Are you worried about your second brother?”
Chen Yan spoke the words that Wen Qingyu dared not voice. Wen Qingyu nodded, her watery eyes filled with sorrow.
"Don't worry, that person's accent just now was like the accent from the Shu Region. Seeing that he can still come and go from the Shu Region, it must be very safe there. Moreover, the power struggles usually don't affect ordinary civilians; your second brother will be fine."
Chen Yan's straightforward analysis eased Wen Qingyu's worries a bit. He then asked, "What are you planning to do now? Are you going to find your friend first, or go to the Shu Region to look for your second brother?"
Wen Qingyu looked at Chen Yan in surprise; this man was much more perceptive than she had imagined, able to see through her concerns at a glance.
This was also where she felt troubled. One was a close relative, and the other was a friend; both were hard for her to part with.
Chen Yan took a sip of cool tea and waited for Wen Qingyu's answer.
After sitting in silence for a long time, Wen Qingyu finally made up her mind and said firmly, "I will find my friend first. If I don't hear anything in three days, I will go to the Shu Region. I will leave marks along the way; if Chasing Wind sees them, he will definitely come back to find me."
Chen Yan's hand holding the teacup suddenly stiffened. Wen Qingyu's choice truly surprised him. In chaotic times, three days could make everything unpredictable.
It seemed that what she said that day was indeed very important and not just a fabrication.
Chen Yan raised his teacup to drink, hiding the bitterness at the corner of his mouth.
