As the three returned to the classroom, Guoguo, Han Min, and Guo Jingjing were fanning themselves with their books.
The classroom was not air-conditioned, and there were only two ceiling fans, which did little to alleviate the heat.
Guo Jingjing's deskmate, Li Junwei, perhaps truly afraid of Han Min, would run out of the classroom as soon as class ended for the next few periods.
After school in the afternoon, since Guoguo's homeroom teacher, Liu Ming, agreed to let her skip evening study sessions, Guoguo had already turned dark after having dinner and taking a shower.
With everyone else in evening study sessions, the dimly lit campus was quiet and empty.
Guoguo's slender figure moved through the campus paths, holding a large sack in her hand. Occasionally, she would bend down to pick up discarded pull-tab cans and beverage bottles from the ground.
She needed to pay for her gym uniform but didn't have enough money. Unable to reach her father, Tang Zongchen, and knowing that Han Min and Guo Jingjing's families were not wealthy either, she felt embarrassed to borrow from them. Thus, she could only apply to her homeroom teacher Liu Ming to skip evening study sessions and work during that time.
However, before working, Guoguo decided to save enough money to pay for her gym uniform. If she couldn't gather 150 yuan within three days, the Physical Education Teacher would not wait for her and would place an order for everyone else's uniforms.
The consequence of this would be that Guoguo would be the only one without a gym uniform...
If she went to work, the boss would not advance her salary. Guoguo could only take advantage of the time when everyone was in evening study sessions to collect pull-tab beverage cans.
Having grown up poor, Guoguo knew her family struggled financially. She had always worked hard in her studies; aside from attending kindergarten, she had not had to pay tuition for many years and even received scholarships that significantly eased her parents' burden.
Now, with her mother Li Xuemei having passed away from heart disease and her father having lost everything due to gambling addiction, Guoguo found herself homeless.
There are seven trash cans on campus, and Guoguo, disregarding the filth, reaches in to rummage through them just to find a Pull-tab Beverage Can.
Guoguo worries that classmates might see his actions, so before he acts, he always looks around to make sure no one is watching before he starts rummaging.
After a while, Guoguo has searched through all seven trash cans but found nothing.
Having finished searching the trash cans, Guoguo washed his hands and dragged a half Sack Pull-tab Beverage Can as he quickly walked toward the school gate.
