Choi Ji-woo is once again starting to play with Tarot Cards.
In his youth, he did not believe in fate, but now he believes deeply in it. For him, fate is not merely an opportunity, but a choice. Just like the Tarot Cards in his hand, the unpredictable choices of the world are hidden within that magical deck.
No matter how tedious the shuffling is, it is just a process. Before you turn over the cards, you face numerous choices and begin to feel anxious about which one you will select.
The world lies before you, and you can only close your eyes, relying solely on your intuition to reveal the card that belongs to you. Once you turn it over, you think you can see clearly the path that lies ahead.
However, this is not the case, because every path has countless branches, and you must ponder even more questions. But when everything becomes the past and you turn back to look, you realize that all the intentional and unintentional choices are contained within that selected card.
Perhaps this is what fate is like.
Choi Ji-woo draws one card from the deck, turns it over, places it in front of him, and opens his eyes wide to see clearly what this card is.
It is an inverted Magician.
The Magician, with his right hand raised holding a wand pointing to the sky and his left index finger pointing to the ground. A person who possesses the mysterious powers of earth, fire, wind, and water; in his hands, nothing is impossible when upright. But what does this inversion symbolize?
Choi Ji-woo wants to divine his son Choi Jae-sun's career development and personal fortune in Shanghai. However, the inverted Magician signifies obstacles, deception, and signs of failure. This is not a good omen; the card suggests that there will be uncontrollable circumstances arising.
He notices that the inverted Magician seems to be staring wide-eyed, with the two ends of his mustache curling up as if something astonishing is about to happen.
The wind rises at the edge of a green pond; waves form amidst gentle ripples.
Thinking of this, Choi Ji-woo frowned and absentmindedly put the Tarot Cards back into the box.
At that moment, a rhythmic knock on the door interrupted Choi Ji-woo's thoughts. Choi Ji-woo was taken aback; no one was allowed to disturb him during this break.
He suddenly remembered that it must be Park Jeong-won, who had just called with urgent news.
Choi Ji-woo had always admired this young confidant. Park Jeong-won was not very old but handled tasks with a maturity beyond his years. He was very smart, grasping any matter quickly, and worked decisively and efficiently. However, something that could fluster Park Jeong-won must be quite extraordinary.
"Come in," Choi Ji-woo said, sitting upright in the black leather chair. He habitually took a cigar from the table and lit it with an exquisite lighter, speaking authoritatively.
Park Jeong-won entered, looking unusually serious. He lowered his head and said softly, "Chairman, I have some news to report."
"Seeing your anxious expression, is it bad news?"
"Yes, Chairman. My subordinate has failed in his duties; please punish him."
"What exactly happened? Whether or not to punish depends on the severity of the situation," Choi Ji-woo raised an eyebrow and said sternly.
"Last time... Song Dazhong messed up."
"What? Who?"
"The assassin who went to Ni Yang."
After careful reminder from Park Jeong-won, Choi Ji-woo seemed to recall that matter.
"Are you saying that woman is not dead?" His cold tone contained considerable displeasure.
"Yes, she is still alive."
"How are you handling things? Didn't you say it was meticulously planned and assured me there would be no mistakes? Do you have any idea what your negligence has caused me? My years of planning have gone to waste!" Choi Ji-woo was very angry, his voice rising significantly.
"I'm sorry, Chairman. Our original plan was thorough and well-prepared, but we didn't expect she would manage to escape death."
"What about her current whereabouts?"
"She has left Ni Yang and gone to Shanghai."
"She has gone to Shanghai?"
"Yes," Park Jeong-won said. "Chairman, give me another chance. I believe the situation can still be salvaged."
Choi Ji-woo stood there, silent, as if considering his words.
"However, there is one more thing I need to report to you," Park Jeong-won said hesitantly.
"What is it?" Choi Ji-woo turned his head and looked at him suspiciously.
"Cui Zai Shan has a girlfriend in Shanghai."
Choi Ji-woo seemed to soften as he talked about his son, saying, "There's no need to report this to me. If it's serious, he will bring it up himself. If it's just a casual fling, then there's no need to inform me."
"But... Chairman, don't you want to know who that woman is?"
"Even if I knew, I wouldn't recognize her! Besides, there are so many girls in Shanghai."
"She's not just anyone; she is..." Park Jeong-won began to hesitate.
"Who is she?" He suddenly felt uneasy and became alert.
"His girlfriend is the woman who escaped death and came to Shanghai, Qiluo Ling." Park Jeong-won hesitated for a moment before reluctantly revealing the truth.
"What did you say?" Choi Ji-woo could hardly believe his ears.
"Chairman, I was shocked too. The world is really that small, and what a coincidence that they met in Shanghai and became a couple."
"Impossible, absolutely impossible. You must be mistaken." Choi Ji-woo's face turned beet red with anger as he spoke.
"I went to Shanghai myself to see it with my own eyes. When Cui Zai Shan took out a photo of his girlfriend in the office, I couldn't believe my eyes. They look exactly alike. To be cautious, I even sent someone to Ni Yang to investigate her and found out that she is indeed alive."
"How could this happen? How could they be together? It's simply a cursed fate! They shouldn't be together at all." Choi Ji-woo covered his face and murmured.
After a moment, Choi Ji-woo seemed to remember something and asked, "How long have they been dating?"
"I'm not exactly sure about the specific time. However, I recalled that when Cui Zai Shan returned last time, he casually asked me about a photo of Qiluo Ling that used to be on my phone. It was sent to me by a private investigator. I hadn't deleted that photo in time, and Cui Zai Shan accidentally saw it. He noticed that the girl in the photo looked very much like his girlfriend and asked me about it when he came back. I didn't pay much attention at the time and brushed it off. Maybe they were already dating back then."
After hearing this, Choi Ji-woo was extremely furious, anger rising from within. He violently overturned everything on the table, and the glassware shattered on the floor with a crisp sound. Perhaps it was too much excitement or too much force; he felt a surge of anger rise in his chest, leaving him weak and slumped in his chair, unable to move.
Park Jeong-won was astonished as he watched everything unfold. He had never seen the chairman lose composure like this. In his impression, Choi Ji-woo had always been a calm and highly controlled person, but today, Choi Ji-woo's inability to control himself truly puzzled him.
Park Jeong-won was eager to understand why Choi Ji-woo's emotions were so out of control and what grudge Qiluo Ling had against him.
Ultimately, Park Jeong-won did not speak up because he knew very well that he was merely an executor of orders and it wasn't his place to inquire; he absolutely could not ask.
"What should we do now? We need to resolve this matter quickly. If Cui Zai Shan finds out, with his personality, it could be disastrous; we won't be able to handle it then," Park Jeong-won said cautiously while looking at him.
Choi Ji-woo raised his hand and waved it dismissively, signaling him to stop talking.
"Let me think for a moment." Choi Ji-woo calmed down, accustomed to standing by the window, quietly contemplating something.
After more than ten minutes, Choi Ji-woo returned to normalcy and turned around coldly to say to Park Jeong-won: "This matter must not be disclosed to Cui Zai Shan. That woman must be dealt with swiftly and efficiently; there can be no further accidents. Whatever plan you have, remember one thing: do not let Cui Zai Shan come to any harm."
Park Jeong-won nodded and quickly turned to leave Choi Jae-sun's office, hurrying out of the company.
