On the road of Kong You, the sound of hoofbeats echoed. Soon, a delicate carriage slowly approached and entered the General's residence from the back alley. After a short while, the back door of the Qin Residence opened again. Xuan Yi, the young man, rode swiftly toward the direction of the palace.
...
Uncle Yu wore a satisfied smile as he quietly closed the palace door and lightened his steps to head down. Just as his feet left the steps, he heard hurried footsteps approaching. Before he could look up, he instinctively began to scold.
"Step lightly! His Majesty just fell asleep; making such a commotion will surely... uh, Qin, General Qin?"
Qin Shuying did not glance much in Uncle Yu's direction; he simply nodded and asked, "Is he inside?" He then hurried inside.
Uncle Yu stomped his foot and quickly turned to block him. After running a few steps, he saw that the Heroic Youth was impatiently saying, "Mind your own business! I have something to discuss with His Majesty."
"But His Majesty just fell asleep; if you go in like this..."
"What of it?"
"At this time, it might not be very appropriate."
"Not appropriate?"
Qin Shuying scoffed, stopping in his tracks and glancing at him while pointing to the girl in white clothes he was holding. The girl silently turned her head and smiled apologetically at Uncle Yu.
Seeing her endearing appearance, Uncle Yu immediately recognized her.
It was this girl who had been sleeping in His Majesty's arms before. It was also because of her that Dou Mama received His Majesty's decree to leave the palace for work.
Now looking at that pure and innocent smile, Uncle Yu found that all his words of advice were suddenly stuck in his throat and could not come out.
Qin Shuying glanced toward the palace and said, "He asked me to bring her here. He is busy from morning till night; perhaps this is the only time he has a bit of leisure. If I don't take this Girl to see him now, will I wait until he wakes up and is too busy to spare any time? What would be the point of coming here then!"
After a barrage of scolding, Uncle Yu felt convinced.
Others in the palace might not know, but both he and Dou Mama understood that this girl's matters were ones that His Majesty personally oversaw; even her name was given by His Majesty himself.
General Qin This statement is indeed reasonable.
Uncle Yu Suddenly at a loss for words, could only watch as Qin Shuying held Liu Qingwu in one arm and casually pushed open the palace door with the other, stepping inside.
Qin Shuying initially thought Huo Yun'ai was still asleep, so instinctively glanced towards the bed first. To her surprise, she saw White-Clad Youth sitting by the bed, quietly gazing towards the door. His expression was calm and serene.
Qin Shuying set Qing Wu down on the ground and cleared her throat, saying, “I brought someone here. What? Did we wake you while talking outside?”
Her words were not without basis.
Although she and Uncle Yu had spoken softly, there shouldn’t have been much noise through the closed palace door. However, Huo Yun'ai, having not slept well since the passing of the Former Emperor, was indeed likely to hear them.
Huo Yun'ai shook his head gently at Qin Shuying's words, “I wasn't completely asleep. You don't need to worry.”
He turned his gaze to the side, fixing his eyes on a fluffy white object, and a faint smile gradually appeared on his lips as he extended his arms forward.
Qing Wu understood that Huo Yun'ai was inviting her over.
She had grown accustomed to this gesture of his, but Qin Shuying, standing nearby with raised eyebrows and an amused expression, made her feel a bit shy under their simultaneous gazes. Hesitatingly, she walked forward and finally made her way to Huo Yun'ai.
The young man looked her up and down. Noticing her flushed cheeks and sparkling eyes, he couldn't help but smile. He stood up and embraced her warmly.
Qin Shuying quietly observed this scene until Huo Yun'ai, taking a step to leave, suddenly asked, “Why did you call Girl over?”
Huo Yun'ai, glancing outside through the open palace door, pondered for a moment before replying, “Come back to pick her up in an hour.”
After speaking, he grabbed a cloak from the nearby table and draped it over himself. He then adjusted it to wrap the girl snugly within. With that, he strode out confidently.
Qin Shuying stood stunned for a moment before realizing she had been completely ignored, instantly feeling frustrated. She took two steps forward wanting to question him but looked up to see White-Clad Youth smiling gently at the girl in his arms, whispering something softly to her, his eyes filled with uncontainable joy.
Recalling the sadness and loneliness that had enveloped him after losing a loved one, Qin Shuying stood still for a long time. Watching their figures disappear from view, she finally let out a heavy sigh and turned to walk outside.
Huo Yun'ai led Liu Qingwu quite a distance until they arrived in front of a two-story bamboo building, where he finally stopped.
Earlier on the way, Qing Wu had heard him say that he would take her to study today. Although she didn't understand why, she listened attentively to him. Now that they had reached their destination, she raised her hand to push aside the half-closed cloak and looked up at the plaque.
Wen Mo Xuan.
It didn't seem like the name of a library; it sounded more like a study.
Huo Yun'ai ascended the steps and took her to the second floor, turning a corner to reach the innermost room before stopping.
As they walked, she noticed that each room they passed had two rows of large bookshelves on either side, filled to the brim with books. Qing Wu thought she might have guessed wrong. It wasn't until they entered this room and saw the Four Treasures of the Study on the desk and the large characters written in dried ink on the open paper that she confirmed she hadn't been mistaken; this was indeed a study. However... it was much larger than an ordinary person's study.
The room was well-lit, with windows on both sides. Strong sunlight streamed through the windows, casting a bright but not glaring light.
There was a furnace in the room. Charcoal was burning inside, filling the entire space with a warm heat. It was evident that it had been prepared earlier and lit in advance.
Huo Yun'ai seated Qing Wu near the furnace to help her warm up, while he went to the bookshelf in the outer room. After a short while, he took a book and brought it back to read under the window.
Qing Wu then jumped down from her chair and walked over to his side, tiptoeing and leaning her head up to look at what he was reading.
Huo Yun'ai was taken by surprise at her sudden action; he suddenly found himself with a girl beside him, her head peeking over curiously at his book.
He couldn't help but chuckle softly and instinctively reached out his long finger to gently tap her nose.
Since he had been holding her earlier, his fingertip felt slightly cool against her skin.
Qing Wu flinched at this coolness. Frowning slightly, she turned her head to look over and happened to catch his smiling gaze.
Huo Yun'ai was amused by her slightly pouting expression. He pulled over a chair beside him and gestured for Qing Wu to sit down next to him.
"Let's read here," he said as he placed the book on his lap.
"Read?" Qing Wu paused for a moment, struggling to articulate a word, filled with confusion as she asked, "Us?"
"Yes. Us." Huo Yun'ai opened a catchy five-character regulated verse and brought the book closer to Qing Wu's eyes. "Let's start with this poem. I will read a line, and you will follow me. If you don't get it right the first time, that's okay; we can try again for a second or third time. It doesn't matter if you can't pronounce it correctly; we can practice until you can read it smoothly, and then we'll move on to the next one. How does that sound?"
Qing Wu didn't expect him to have such a plan, wanting to personally teach her how to speak little by little, which left her in shock.
Reciting a complete line of poetry?
This was something she had never attempted before!
In her extreme excitement and nervousness, Qing Wu froze in place, her fingers gripping the hem of her clothes trembling slightly.
Huo Yun'ai noticed her emotional shift but said nothing more. He gently held her hand in his palm and began reciting the first line of the poem.
His fingertips were cool, but his palm was incredibly warm.
The warmth gradually spread over, slowly melting away the resistance and panic in Qing Wu's heart.
In a daze, she lost track of how many times he had read the first line and didn't realize when she made her first sound. By the time she became aware of it, she was already softly reading along with him.
