When Qin Shuying arrived at the palace, he first asked the Maid and learned that Huo Yun'ai and Liu Qingwu had already returned to the hall, so he hurried inside.
He pushed the door open and saw two figures standing by the window, one tall and one short, both dressed in white garments. The tall youth stood upright, holding a scroll, with a faint smile on his lips as he looked at the shorter one.
As for the petite girl...
She was holding a brush, her head lowered as she diligently wrote large characters. Occasionally, she would glance up at the youth, seemingly asking him how her writing was.
Bright sunlight poured over the two of them, creating a serene and harmonious atmosphere that one felt reluctant to disturb.
Qin Shuying unconsciously slowed his pace, quietly walking over to them while contemplating whether to take the girl away immediately.
Just as he made up his mind to break this tranquility with his voice, suddenly, a soft and delicate voice called out from nearby, tinged with a hint of hesitation.
"Qin Qin."
Upon hearing this call, Qin Shuying instinctively wanted to respond. But then he thought better of it, and his expression darkened like ink.
He strode over to the table and glanced at the smiling Liu Qingwu, then turned to question Huo Yun'ai: "Was it you? This nickname must have come from you, right?"
In those days, the Grand General loved to call him "Qin Qin"...
Only the Former Emperor and Huo Yun'ai knew about this!
Seeing the furious Qin Shuying, Huo Yun'ai merely curled her lips slightly, her expression cool and composed as she looked back at him without saying a word.
Qin Shuying originally wanted to say more, but his silent reaction doused her enthusiasm like a bucket of cold water, instantly calming her down. Then she suddenly remembered something, and the anger on her face faded away.
Slowly turning her head, Qin Shuying looked at Qing Wu in disbelief, and when she spoke again, she found it hard to form coherent sentences.
"You... you just called me what?"
After shouting that earlier, he was somewhat angry. Qing Wu dared not repeat it.
Turning to look at Huo Yun'ai, she saw him nodding affirmatively. Qing Wu thought for a moment and hesitantly pronounced each word: "Qin, Shu, Ying."
The pronunciation of the last two characters was a bit awkward; she didn't get them quite right, but they were close enough. However, the first character "Qin" was pronounced clearly and accurately. Upon reflection, the way she had called out before was to highlight her strengths while avoiding her weaknesses.
The previously angry Qin Shuying suddenly broke into a smile.
He circled around Qing Wu twice and lightly punched Huo Yun'ai on the shoulder. "Well done! You actually taught Girl how to speak! So that's what this is all about? How did you manage that?"
How did he manage that?
Liu Qingwu looked up and exchanged a glance with Huo Yun'ai, both involuntarily recalling the earlier situation.
It took more than half an hour to read a single poem.
Strangely enough, Qing Wu, who usually found it hard to speak in front of others, was able to read aloud when studying with Huo Yun'ai. Once she read the first line, she could follow along with every sentence he read.
At first, although she could follow along, it was quite laborious to produce complete sentences. Huo Yun'ai had to read each word slowly for her to silently memorize it before trying to speak it out loud.
But after the first poem, the second, third, and fourth went increasingly smoothly. Altogether, they only took a little over half an hour, comparable to the time spent on the first one alone.
Huo Yun'ai was very pleased. He raised his hand and ruffled Qing Wu's hair, sighing, "Very good. In a few days, you should be able to do it like everyone else."
His praise made Qing Wu blush a little. Although she couldn't speak, she was not truly a child and naturally learned faster than ordinary children. Moreover, she knew that she wasn't learning particularly well.
Huo Yun'ai had clearly put a lot of effort into selecting the poems. All four were easy to recite, with no difficult syllables. Even so, there were still a few sounds that Qing Wu pronounced inaccurately.
However, Huo Yun'ai did not show even a hint of criticism; instead, he smiled at her, believing that she would do much better next time.
Next time?
Qing Wu couldn't help but feel a bit hopeful. But then she thought about how it wasn't right to disturb him like this. She hesitated about whether to decline his offer.
Before she could resolve her inner conflict, Huo Yun'ai said, "No need to worry. I'm very happy to teach you."
Saying this, he walked over to the bookshelf in the outer room, found the spot where he had taken the book earlier, and returned it. After turning back to the study, he picked up the cloak resting nearby and began to tidy it up. Once everything was ready, he approached Qing Wu and bent down to pick her up when suddenly a soft voice called out.
"Yun?"
Huo Yun'ai's movements froze abruptly as he turned his face in disbelief to look over.
Qing Wu felt uneasy under his astonished gaze.
She silently recited a line from one of the poems they had read earlier and paused after the second line. Then she carefully repeated the word "Yun" from that line and cautiously asked again, "Yun?"
Huo Yun'ai was silent for a while.
He lowered his head and looked at the ground, his long eyelashes hiding all his thoughts.
Qing Wu felt a bit nervous. She wasn't sure if calling him like that was too abrupt. However, the word "Ai" was too difficult for her, and she wasn't accurate yet.
Just when she had been anxiously waiting for a long time, he suddenly stood up.
Before Qing Wu could react, Huo Yun'ai draped the cloak over her, secured the hood on her head, and wrapped her up completely in the cape.
"Since you can call someone by name now, I'll teach you another one. You might find it useful later."
It was at this moment that he mentioned Qin Shuying's name. Qing Wu carefully noted it down and repeated it many times on the way until she finally called out to Qin Shuying after seeing her.
Although Qin Shuying had inquired about Qing Wu's conversation process, Qing Wu couldn't fully recount their previous efforts, and Huo Yun'ai wasn't accustomed to explaining things in detail, so he only briefly summarized the general process.
After a few concise sentences from the Young Emperor, General Qin initially thought that Qing Wu was quite intelligent and had quickly learned many phrases; with just one more round of practice, she would be able to speak like an ordinary person.
Therefore, on the way back, Qin Shuying couldn't help but praise her profusely until Qing Wu blushed and kept waving her hands to stop her.
Dou Mama was also quite surprised by Qing Wu's progress. She hadn't expected that after just two or three hours apart, the girl could memorize four poems.
However, unlike Qin Shuying's unabashed praise, Dou Mama felt mixed emotions about Qing Wu's progress.
On the carriage ride home, Dou Mama pondered for a long time before finally lowering her voice to remind Qing Wu.
"After the young lady returns, do not reveal that you are able to speak directly."
Qing Wu listened in silence, raising her eyes to look at her quietly.
Dou Mama, unsure if the young lady could understand her words, pondered for a moment and tried to explain, "Revealing your talents too early can easily raise suspicion. It is better to take things step by step and gradually show your abilities."
Qing Wu understood in her heart. She softly replied, "I know."
Dou Mama secretly breathed a sigh of relief and finally revealed the first smile of reassurance since their reunion.
During the rest of the journey, Dou Mama did not say much more. After a period of silence, Qing Wu repeatedly recalled the poem she had just recited, reflecting on where she had not pronounced it accurately enough, secretly hoping that she would pronounce these syllables better in the future.
Before long, they returned to the residence.
As Dou Mama held Qing Wu upon their return to the courtyard, they saw Peach Silk pacing back and forth in the yard, looking anxious.
