He Family was eager to quickly tidy up the West Courtyard for Qing Wu to live in. Since Dou Mama had previously taken Qing Wu out, she discussed the details with Mama Huang. They arranged for someone to clean the courtyard and personally selected some elegant and exquisite items from the storeroom. They planned to place these items in the house once the courtyard was ready.
Due to the long absence of a girl in the family, there weren't many suitable items prepared for daughters. Although He Family had provided some for Qing Wu before, she only occupied one room and didn't need much. Now that they were preparing a separate courtyard for her, every little item was essential.
These tasks seemed few but were actually quite tedious. After a busy while, there were still many things left unattended. Moreover, due to some details that had not been considered properly earlier, they needed to adjust and modify the original plan accordingly.
He Family then instructed Mama Huang to continue with the cleaning while the rest would be discussed and continued tomorrow.
After receiving her orders, Mama Huang planned to call over the two rough maidservants they had chosen to observe them for a couple of days before making a final decision.
Having made up her mind, she called over Red Peony, and just as she said a few words, Perilla lifted the curtain and entered the room, walking straight up to He Family before stopping and speaking softly.
He Family furrowed her brows slightly and asked in a low voice, "What happened?"
"I don't know either," Perilla replied awkwardly. "They just passed by from that direction and saw me; I hurried to report it to you. They said that Third Young Master seems to be coming this way, so he should be arriving soon."
As soon as she finished speaking, before He Family could discuss anything else, they heard someone outside loudly announcing that Third Young Master and the young lady had arrived.
Hearing that Qing Wu was coming, He Family felt joy in her heart. However, thinking about her son's current situation, her smile froze on her face before it could fully bloom. Her lips pressed tightly together as a hint of anger slowly emerged.
When Liu Anfeng stumbled into the room, he saw his mother’s displeased expression.
His already painful leg suddenly felt weak, and he swayed dangerously close to collapsing. Fortunately, Liang Hai and Peach Silk worked well together and helped him sit down in a chair just before he showed any signs of despair.
However, as soon as he sat down, the spot where he had been maliciously kicked by his brothers flared up in pain.
Liu Anfeng let out a yelp that nearly caused him to fall off the chair. Upon looking up and seeing his mother’s angry face, he swallowed back his cries of pain. He sat at the edge of the chair with his head lowered, not daring to make a sound.
Watching her son like this made He Family feel both heartbroken and furious.
She understood Liu Anfeng's temperament. He was not a bad person, but he acted too recklessly, often getting into trouble.
Seeing him beaten like this, the He Family felt anxious and distressed, but they were also angry at his impulsive behavior. In such a mood, she, usually very gentle, couldn't help but speak more sternly: "What on earth is going on!"
Liu Anfeng was taken aback by his mother's severe tone. After hesitating for a moment, he mumbled softly, "Some people just don't know what's good for them. I taught them a lesson."
Although his words were factual, they could easily be interpreted in another way—he couldn't stand others and ended up beating them up.
The He Family misunderstood from this brief statement and became furious. Just as they were about to scold him further, a young voice came from outside.
"Aunt, please do not blame Anfeng. He did this for his sister."
As he spoke, the curtain was lifted. Elegant Youth stepped inside, followed closely by Dou Mama, who was carrying Qing Wu.
Upon seeing the former, Liu Anfeng's expression darkened immediately, and he said irritably, "Why did you come along?"
Wu Linxi smiled good-naturedly, "If I want to come, of course I will come."
When Wu Linxi had suggested accompanying Liu Anfeng earlier, Liu Anfeng had adamantly refused to let him help.
The young man felt embarrassed and immediately rejected his friend's offer, pushing him away as he took small steps back. Fortunately, Dou Mama was there to support him slightly so he didn't fall again. After leaving the woods, Dou Mama called for Liang Hai and Peach Silk, who were still searching. With the help of the maids and servants, Liu Anfeng finally returned home safely.
Wu Linxi knew Liu Anfeng had a strong personality and didn't confront him directly. From observing Liu Anfeng's behavior with his parents earlier, Wu Linxi understood that while Liu Anfeng dared to argue with his father Liu Fangyi, he was always very respectful towards his mother He Family. At this hour, Liu Fangyi had likely not returned home yet, so Liu Anfeng would have to face He Family.
Fearing that Liu Anfeng might not explain himself clearly in front of He Family and considering the situation, Wu Linxi decided to follow him. To prevent Liu Anfeng from getting more upset and worsening his injuries, he kept a distance behind him as they walked together.
Dou Mama was already walking behind with Qing Wu and chatted casually with Wu Linxi. During their conversation, everyone arrived at the He Family's courtyard. Upon hearing that He Family seemed to be angry, Wu Linxi hurried ahead into the house to explain to He Family.
As he recounted the nonsense from the Wenwu Brothers and the fight between the two parties, the He Family's expressions grew increasingly grim.
Wu Linxi hurriedly said, "Aunt, please don't be angry with Anfeng. To be honest, I think what he did wasn't wrong at all."
At that moment, Qing Wu had already entered the room.
She was unaware of the situation beforehand but heard Wu Linxi's words and felt a bit anxious. She quickly said, "Mother, don't be angry. Don't be angry."
She had previously only spoken a few brief words at home. Now, even though she spoke just a little more, it was enough to bring great joy to the He Family, and their expressions softened considerably.
She hugged Qing Wu onto her lap and asked, "Qing Wu knows about this matter too?"
Qing Wu nodded and pointed at Liu Anfeng, saying, "Brother good."
These three words were pronounced quite clearly and floated into everyone's ears in the room.
Liu Anfeng was no exception.
His face felt a bit hot as he glanced at Qing Wu. Seeing her looking at him with bright eyes made his cheeks burn even more. He quickly turned his head away awkwardly. After a moment, feeling that withdrawing his gaze was too embarrassing, he couldn't help but let out a heavy hum.
Qing Wu pursed her lips and stared at him with delight, her eyes crinkling with laughter.
The He Family witnessed this scene and sighed lightly, saying, "Do you all think I'm angry because he got hurt in a fight?" Seeing the children nodding one by one, the He Family shook her head and said, "Feng Ge'er is willing to protect his sister and argue for her reputation; I am truly pleased! It's those people..."
Her expression darkened suddenly, her usual gentleness vanishing in an instant, replaced by anger. "What angers me is that some people disregard familial ties and etiquette, spouting nonsense filled with filthy language and casually throwing dirt on my daughter! Yet they act so self-righteous while injuring my son! Come here!"
The maidservants stepped forward to listen to her orders.
“Perilla took the young master to apply the medicine. As for you all,” He Family instructed several sturdy maids, “you go and ‘invite’ the two young masters from the Third Master’s side! I must ask them clearly. Where did we fail in our care that they dared to act so recklessly in my house!”
The servants all complied. Just as they were about to disperse, a servant came to report that someone named Zheng Ning had arrived outside the residence, insisting on entering to be the young lady's tutor. Clearly, it was previously arranged for Housekeeper Mother to be the one to teach the young lady, not a tutor. Moreover, the housekeeper had already been engaged.
However, that person refused to listen to any persuasion. He remained adamant.
He Family found this person somewhat unreasonable and was already in a bad mood, so they immediately ordered him to be driven away.
Just as the maid was about to leave, she was stopped by Wu Linxi who reached out.
“Don’t go just yet.” Wu Linxi pondered for a moment and said to He Family, “Aunt, I feel that the name Zheng Ning sounds somewhat familiar.”
“Wait, I didn’t notice before, but now that you mention it, it does sound familiar. Where have I heard it?” Liu Anfeng said while holding his aching face.
As the two were deep in thought, Dou Mama hesitantly spoke up.
“If I’m not mistaken, Imperial Teacher Zheng An’s youngest brother… seems to be called ‘Zheng Ning’?”
