In that moment, Rao Jie saw them eagerly tearing at each other's clothes.
With a loud "bang," the door closed.
The hallway fell silent, and soon the motion-sensor lights turned off.
Only the moonlight illuminated the scene, where a petite figure curled up on the ground, completely hidden behind a blue suitcase.
She felt icy all over, cold sweat trickling down her brow. After a while, her eyes finally focused, and she began to mechanically dial Bao Ming's number, only to find that his phone was turned off.
Rao Jie had no idea how long she had been waiting outside.
She wanted to cry but found herself unable to shed a single tear.
She could knock on the door, catch them in the act, or confront them directly.
But she didn’t want to…
She just felt utterly exhausted, both physically and mentally.
It turned out that experiencing great sorrow followed by even greater sorrow felt so empty; her mind was foggy, and her heart felt heavy.
It was as if nothing mattered anymore.
After squatting until her legs nearly gave out, Rao Jie abandoned her self-inflicted torment and slumped down on the ground, allowing her nearly numb legs to recover for a moment.
After some time had passed, she glanced at her phone and saw it was already twelve-thirty.
With an expressionless face, Rao Jie picked up her suitcase and silently left the floor, not even casting a glance at the door as she passed by.
Dragging her suitcase aimlessly along the nearly deserted street, she was accompanied only by the post-rain humidity and the streetlights.
Rao Jie walked and walked until she was utterly exhausted before finally stopping to rest. As her body grew too tired to move, her mind began to stir.
Right, where was she supposed to go tonight? Was she going to sleep on the streets? Without an ID, she couldn’t dare go to an informal place, and she couldn’t get into a formal one either.
After hesitating for a moment, Rao Jie started scrolling through her WeChat contacts, hoping to find someone who could help her.
Just then, a voice video call suddenly popped up on her screen.
To her surprise, it was Wu Xin from a foreign country.
In her current state of sluggishness, Rao Jie didn’t think much before tapping to answer the call.
Soon enough, a beautiful oval face appeared on her phone screen against a backdrop that looked like it had been filtered with beauty enhancements—blue skies dotted with white clouds and lush green trees.
In the small box in the upper right corner, the overall tone was dim, as if the phone's pixels were too low to bear. Only the streetlights and the road were visible, along with a face that resembled a ghostly woman.
“Xiaojiejie, do you want to... Oh my gosh... You scared me to death! Jie Jie, what are you doing? Trying to frighten me? Oh my! You've got some nerve!”
“Wu... Xin...” Rao Jie realized after speaking that her voice was indescribably hoarse, like a thirsty traveler in a desert.
Wu Xin's expression changed instantly. “What’s wrong? Rao Jie, you... you’re out there alone! Let me think... Oh no, it’s past midnight where you are! How can you be out alone? Aren’t you supposed to be at home?”
Rao Jie had a lot to say, but when she opened her mouth, she didn’t know how to express it.
Wu Xin noticed that something was off with Rao Jie, especially at this late hour. Concerned, she said, “If you can’t say it, then don’t. Just find a place to go. Right, since you can’t go to school now, how about your boyfriend’s place...”
Before Wu Xin could finish her sentence, Rao Jie interrupted, “No... I have nowhere to go... I didn’t bring my ID...”
Wu Xin’s beautiful brows knitted together in confusion; she had a hundred questions swirling in her mind but couldn’t voice them.
“You can’t just wander outside; it’s too dangerous. Right... go to my house! Do you remember? I have an apartment in Shencheng. It’s empty now; I’ll give you the code. You need to go there right away, do you hear me?”
Rao Jie didn’t expect that it would be Wu Xin in Foreign Country who would provide her with a Remote Rescue.
Soon, Rao Jie arrived at Wu Xin’s home. Her apartment was located within a high-end community. After getting out of the car, she had to walk for a while. Unfortunately, heavy rain began pouring down, soaking Rao Jie completely and leaving her feeling chilled to the bone by the time she entered the Wu Family.
Worried that Rao Jie might catch a cold and not having time for detailed explanations, Wu Xin directed her straight to her bedroom. It still had some warmth from when she had stayed there during summer vacation; the other rooms were likely covered in dust.
The room had its own bathroom and all necessary toiletries.
After taking a hot shower, Rao Jie felt much better. The warm water seemed to wash away not only the chill from her body but also some of the coldness in her heart. Remembering Wu Xin's instructions about video calling later, she didn’t have time to dwell on anything else.
The house was empty; her suitcase remained unopened and she couldn’t find her pajamas anywhere. So, wrapped in a towel, Rao Jie stepped out.
She figured there probably wasn’t any drinkable water at home and wanted to look for an electric kettle to boil some water for herself.
When she reached the kitchen, she found the kettle sitting directly on the dining table with water still inside. Surprised by how careless Wu Xin had been—leaving things out before leaving—she didn’t think much of it and poured water into it before filling another pot with cold water to boil.
While waiting for it to heat up, she wondered if there were any expired foods in the double-door refrigerator nearby.
Thinking this way, Rao Jie opened the fridge and found it packed with items—mostly instant meals—and several large bottles of mineral water.
She paused for a moment, slightly taken aback; what was the difference between this and what she had just bought?
Instead of checking expiration dates, she simply took out an unopened bottle of mineral water.
Since there was water available and she was thirsty, she decided to drink it right away.
Standing in front of the fridge with her head tilted back and holding up the bottle, she began gulping down the water.
Suddenly, the door creaked open. Rao Jie was taken aback, still unable to react, when a tall man appeared at the entrance holding a dripping transparent umbrella. He was lowering his head to close the umbrella, and once it was secured, he placed it in a black metal stand by the door. As he raised his head, he seemed to tower even taller.
Rao Jie suddenly snapped back to reality, but out of fear, her throat tightened, and she couldn't make a sound; a mouthful of water was forcefully sprayed out instead.
The man was startled upon seeing Rao Jie as well, but he wasn't afraid. Instead, he furrowed his brow instantly. "Who are you? Why are you here?" His displeased voice was cold and assertive.
"..." Rao Jie was stunned; this... shouldn't this be her line?
Seeing that she didn't respond, the man narrowed his eyes slightly, his face showing impatience as he regarded her with suspicion. "I ask you how you got into my house? A thief? A homeless person? A creepy stalker?"
Rao Jie slowly widened her eyes, looking completely at a loss.
"Forget it. No matter who you are, I'll give you ten seconds to get out; otherwise, I'll call the police!"
