Jian Yunong lay on the carpet looking at the box, her eyelids growing heavier, and she fell asleep just like that.
Until the urgent ringing of the phone woke her up. She groggily got up to answer it; it was the driver sent from the old house who had arrived at the door to take her for dinner.
Jian Yunong quickly got up and hurriedly changed her clothes before heading out.
"Sorry about that."
The driver had been waiting outside for half an hour and was worried something had happened to Jian Yunong at home.
"It's fine, young lady." If Jian Yunong hadn't answered the phone soon, he might have had to call the police.
Going to the Huo Family Old Residence for dinner made Jian Yunong very happy. Besides the delicious food, she could also accompany Grandma Huo in place of Huo Jincheng.
What she didn't expect was that Huo Jincheng's mother was also there.
Jian Yunong felt a bit apprehensive about seeing her. During dinner, she became quite restrained, sitting upright and remaining silent.
Huo's mother was a strong and proud woman; just sitting there exuded a powerful aura. Jian Yunong lowered her gaze, constantly reminding herself that she was going to spend her life with Huo Jincheng. There would be many more days ahead when she would meet Huo's mother. If they couldn't get along happily, she shouldn't feel tormented—she could just consider herself as background...
After politely addressing her as "Mother," Jian Yunong tried hard to ignore Huo's mother.
The meal went by without incident.
Huo's mother put down her chopsticks, lightly dabbed a napkin at the corner of her lips, and turned her gaze to Jian Yunong, who had been acting like a quail. "Come to my study for a moment."
Jian Yunong's hand holding the chopsticks trembled; it surely wasn't good news. It was probably about Yi Nansheng and she was going to be reprimanded.
Jian Yunong slightly pursed her lips and was about to put down her chopsticks when Grandma Huo's authoritative voice rang out, "Is there anything that can't wait until after dinner? Thunder doesn't strike those who are eating. None of you are accompanying me for dinner, and now that I finally have someone to eat with me, you won't even let her finish? What could be so important? Daughter-in-law, why don't you tell us?"
Huo Jincheng's Mother No matter how capable one is, respect for the mother-in-law is essential. After being reprimanded by her mother-in-law, she realized her mistake and glanced at Jian Yunong, saying, "Finish your meal with Grandma before coming to my study."
"Okay." Jian Yunong was taken aback, not expecting the usually kind Grandma Huo to make her strong-willed mother-in-law back down so easily.
Grandma Huo smiled gently at her, "Take your time eating, no rush."
Jian Yunong nodded, feeling a bit emotional, and buried her head to eat more seriously.
Usually, Grandma Huo would leave the table after finishing her meal as she had her own schedule, but today she stayed with Jian Yunong, and the two took their time peeling shrimp.
No matter how slowly they ate, the meal eventually came to an end. Jian Yunong remembered that her mother-in-law was waiting upstairs and was about to go up when Grandma Huo held her back. "No need to go. Your mother-in-law just left Huo Family. A woman like her wouldn't stay home for long."
Jian Yunong widened her eyes in surprise. "She really left?"
The meal hadn't taken long at all; she had prepared herself for a scolding from her mother-in-law. But this mother-in-law had already left...
Should she be happy or relieved?
"I feel like my Daughter-in-law was born with the wrong gender; she should have been a man. Her work capabilities are unmatched. The group flourished under her leadership and grew bigger and bigger. After giving birth to Huo Jincheng, she devoted herself entirely to work. Huo Jincheng has been raised by me and his grandfather since he was little. Every time my Daughter-in-law sees Huo Jincheng, she looks like she's ready to reprimand him, just like earlier when she was about to teach you a lesson."
Jian Yunong stuck out her tongue, surprised that Huo Jincheng received the same treatment. She thought it was only because of the Daughter-in-law that things were this way...
"Grandma, I can understand why my mother-in-law treats me this way. But I think Huo Jincheng is truly outstanding. The financial reports praise him; at such a young age, he has surpassed many of his peers and reached heights that most people struggle to achieve in their lifetime."
Grandma Huo patted Jian Yunong on the head. She favored the grandson she raised herself and felt as if compliments about him were compliments for herself as well. "Isn't that right? I also think Huo Jincheng is great. But my Daughter-in-law is too strong-willed and always critical, making a perfectly good child seem flawed in every way. In the past, Huo Jincheng listened to her a lot and always wanted his mother's praise. A good child turned into a working machine. I was worried that this would lead to problems; after all, how can a life solely focused on work be considered happy? I hope that Huo Jincheng, who grew up without a father, can find the happiness that ordinary people have."
Jian Yunong couldn't imagine what Huo Jincheng's childhood was like; it sounded quite sad.
She had grown up in a loving environment, with a doting father, an affectionate mother, and a caring grandfather—being called the little princess of the family wasn't an exaggeration.
"After taking a sip of tea, Grandma Huo continued, 'Later, Huo Jincheng started dating a girl that the whole family disliked, causing quite a stir in the city.'
Thinking about Bai Ru already being married to Huo Liangchen, Grandma Huo quickly changed her words, 'Huo Jincheng seemed to have suddenly entered a rebellious phase, choosing a girlfriend that no one in the family liked, which stirred up a lot of trouble.'
She patted Jian Yunong's hand and estimated that Jian Yunong was aware of these matters and didn't shy away from her. 'At that time, the mother and son were at odds with each other. My daughter-in-law finally stopped nitpicking about whether Huo Jincheng was doing well in his career and instead started criticizing his girlfriend. But that rebellious kid grew up and had his own abilities to stand up against the family; it wasn't easy for him to back down. I actually think Huo Jincheng didn't really like that girl. He might have been disappointed too many times by his picky mother over the years, and then suddenly exploded. The more his mother disapproved, the more he acted like he liked her. But look, in the end, he didn’t marry that girl? They weren't meant for each other; they wouldn't be able to live under the same roof. He also learned the hard way through his rebellion. You met him at just the right time.'
Jian Yunong lowered her head, feeling a bit awkward. Was her timing considered... taking advantage of an opportunity?
Not really, since when they first met, they weren't looking to get married but wanted to cancel their engagement; neither wanted to hold back the other. Yet it was strangely like Murphy's Law—the things you least want to happen often do.
'Grandma.'
Huo Jincheng's voice suddenly rang out. Grandma Huo turned her head; Huo Jincheng had a slight scent of alcohol on him but walked steadily.
'Have you eaten yet?' Grandma Huo asked.
'Not yet. I came back specifically for dinner,' he replied.
'You didn’t eat while socializing outside?' Grandma Huo couldn't help but feel angry.
Huo Jincheng sat next to Jian Yunong, wrapped his arm around his daughter-in-law's shoulders, pulling her into his embrace. 'I heard there’s good food at home, so I saved some room for dinner.'
'There’s no food!' Grandma Huo said sternly but was already getting up and heading toward the kitchen.
'Could it be that you ate it all, Daughter-in-law?'
Huo Jincheng leaned closer, making it impossible for Jian Yunong to escape. He even cupped her face with his hand, the smell of alcohol invading her senses as he asked, 'What delicious food did you have today? Hmm?'"
The smell of alcohol was overwhelming, and Jian Yunong couldn't help but complain, "You can't even drink, yet you still have so much..."
"I'm not drunk!"
Upon hearing this, Jian Yunong wanted to roll her eyes. This was the classic line of someone who was clearly intoxicated.
Huo Jincheng wrapped his arms around Jian Yunong, his beautifully shaped lips pressed against her face. Jian Yunong tried to dodge, but the kiss landed on her cheek, causing Huo Jincheng to frown in dissatisfaction.
"This is the living room! The living room!" It wasn't like they were at home; what if Grandma suddenly walked in, or some relative unexpectedly returned? Jian Yunong pushed him away with her small hands, but Huo Jincheng held her wrists behind her back, binding her tightly. Unable to move, she found herself silenced by Huo Jincheng's lips.
Surprisingly, the taste of alcohol on his tongue was not as unbearable as it smelled. Huo Jincheng was passionately relentless; he not only invaded her mouth but also sucked heavily on her lips. The ambiguous sounds made Jian Yunong's heart race, and she couldn't help but bite Huo Jincheng.
Finally, Huo Jincheng released her, his heated gaze falling on Jian Yunong's face.
"What's wrong? Did something happen?" Jian Yunong felt that something was off.
Huo Jincheng withdrew his gaze, his voice still carrying a husky tone that was deep and alluring. "I'm hungry; let's eat."
Eating is the most important thing. Jian Yunong followed Huo Jincheng to the dining room, where Grandma smiled warmly at them. Jian Yunong felt a bit embarrassed, realizing that Grandma had probably seen everything from the kitchen.
Huo Jincheng pulled her down to sit at the table. "Stay with me and eat some more."
Jian Yunong touched her already full stomach but nodded anyway. "Okay."
Grandma didn't linger in the living room and left with a smile.
Huo Jincheng had been behaving himself for only a short while before reaching out again to take Jian Yunong's hand.
He held her wrist and shook it a few times without letting go. Jian Yunong was getting a bit annoyed. "We're eating; can't you just behave while we eat?"
"I'm dizzy."
Huo Jincheng supported his forehead with one hand, looking quite uncomfortable, his brows tightly furrowed.
Jian Yunong immediately became anxious. "What happened? Do you need to call a doctor? I told you not to drink too much. Why did you drink so much?"
Jian Yunong felt both angry and distressed.
Huo Jincheng leaned back against the chair, looking disinclined to move, and lazily said, "I want to eat shrimp."
"I'll peel it for you." Jian Yunong wiped her hands clean and focused on peeling the shrimp for him. Her movements were quite quick; after all, she loved eating them herself. The tender white shrimp meat dipped in sauce was handed to Huo Jincheng's lips. With her hand guiding him, he ate it. "I want more."
"How about some rice?"
"I only want shrimp."
Jian Yunong didn't dare to stop her hands and quickened her pace.
In her concentration, she didn't notice the slight upward curve at the corner of Huo Jincheng's mouth, a secretly meaningful smile.
Watching his little daughter-in-law busying herself for him, his gloomy mood finally lifted just a little.
