Jian Yunong had no intention of getting angry with the Huo Family; she was doing well and didn't want to bring up those matters that would only upset her.
Her only wish was for the Huo Family not to disturb them.
After two days off, the family drove home. From a distance, seeing three luxury cars parked at their doorstep gave Jian Yunong a bad feeling.
The visitors did not include Mother Huo, only Grandma Huo. The elderly woman was warm and friendly, and upon seeing Jian Yunong, she wiped away her tears. Even though Jian Yunong knew that half of the old lady's purpose for coming was for the child, she still couldn't refuse Grandma Huo entry.
Grandma Huo saw the child happily grinning from ear to ear and presented a black card as a meeting gift, saying it was from the late grandfather, offering one million as a greeting gift for Jian Yunong's child. The child showed no interest in the black card, returned it, and ran off to play with toys.
Grandma Huo handed the card back to Jian Yunong, who smiled at Huo Jincheng: this matter was not her responsibility.
Huo Jincheng's reaction was to accept it without hesitation; after all, it was the old man's heartfelt gesture and should not go to waste.
Jian Yunong could tell that Grandma Huo wanted to talk to Huo Jincheng about something, so she sensibly went to the kitchen to wash some fruit.
Ten minutes later, Jian Yunong had the child bring the washed strawberries to great-grandmother.
Grandma Huo didn't stay long before leaving, likely because her conversation with Huo Jincheng hadn't gone well.
Jian Yunong didn't ask much; this was Huo Jincheng's family matter. He always understood her stance of not wanting to get entangled with the Huo Family.
Huo Jincheng also didn't bring it up. He took the child to bathe and prepared him for his school project needed for the next day.
With the study light turned off, Jian Yunong returned to their bedroom where Huo Jincheng was on the phone, gesturing for her to come over.
Jian Yunong lay down beside him, and Huo Jincheng wrapped his arm around her shoulder while hanging up the phone.
"I remember you have time tomorrow afternoon; I'll come pick you up from school."
"Mm? Is there something going on?"
"I think this house is too small now, and this neighborhood isn't very good either. I found a real estate agent who selected three options for us. Let's go see them together and see which one you like."
"Why change houses? Guai Guai is still small, and the house is enough for us. The neighbors in this neighborhood are quite nice."
Huo Jincheng pinched her cheek and said, "You wouldn't want people to just drop by uninvited all the time, would you? Do you want to be taken away one day without even knowing it?"
It turned out that this was about Grandma Huo's sudden visit today. Jian Yunong leaned against Huo Jincheng and kissed him on the lips, saying, "Then I'll listen to you."
Today, Jian Yunong was substituting for a professor and was bombarded with questions from a student after class.
Huo Jincheng stood at the door, leaning against the frame, remaining silent. The male student who was asking endless questions finally began to feel uncomfortable.
Seeing Huo Jincheng, Jian Yunong smiled and said, "Darling, I'll be done soon."
The male student hurriedly packed his things and left.
Huo Jincheng walked around the classroom and said, "Looks like I'll have to come pick you up more often."
While packing her things, Jian Yunong casually replied, "If you're at home with nothing to do, you can come to our school more often. Many classes here are free to attend. I can also get you a library card so you can read in the library. The school's library is the largest in the entire state."
Huo Jincheng walked over and wrapped his arms around Jian Yunong's waist. "I think that's great. Teacher Jian, can we have a campus romance in the future?"
His lips brushed against her ear, sending a warm sensation that made Jian Yunong giggle. "Hey hey hey, stop it! This is school. Students and teachers aren't allowed to date."
Huo Jincheng frowned. "Really not allowed?"
"Yes. Stop being so frivolous."
"Then forget it. If I can't date Teacher Jian, it's neither interesting nor meaningful."
Jian Yunong: "..."
Huo Jincheng held Jian Yunong's hand as they walked through the campus.
Occasionally, Jian Yunong's students would bump into them and greet them with smiles.
Jian Yunong blushed and greeted them back.
After getting into the car, Jian Yunong couldn't help but pinch Huo Jincheng's arm hard, thinking he was such a show-off! What a flirt! College students in love usually just walk side by side, but he insisted on holding her hand.
"Daughter-in-law, you are getting fiercer by the day. This is domestic violence," Huo Jincheng feigned innocence. "We are legal; it's just holding hands. Do you think it's not intimate enough? Should I carry you all the way next time?"
Jian Yunong didn't mean that at all.
"Just drive."
Jian Yunong didn't want to engage in a verbal spar with him.
Regardless of what she said about Huo Jincheng, he would come to pick her up from work every day in the future.
After five years apart, he was making up for the time they couldn't be together with his actions.
They had looked at three new houses, all in the Upper East Side. When they saw the first one, Jian Yunong thought it was a bit too big and wondered if the second one would be more suitable. However, the next two houses were even larger than the first.
Jian Yunong didn't immediately express her opinion and told the real estate agent that she needed to discuss it with her husband first.
"Don't like any of them? I also think they're not great; they're a bit small, and the security system in the community isn't the best."
Hearing this, did he actually want to buy something even more expensive?
Jian Yunong hesitated for a moment, her tone becoming gentler, "Honey, we don't really need such a... big house right now, do we? If it's too big, both me and Guai Guai will be scared."
Huo Jincheng turned his head to look at her, "The house we lived in when we were in Nancheng was just as big. I thought Teacher Jian had grown up. Turns out, only her chest has grown, but her courage has shrunk?"
Jian Yunong wanted to pinch him again, "Can't you be a little more serious?"
"Wife. Just tell me what kind of place you like. It's just buying a house; I have the money for that."
This money?
His tone was so casual, as if he was just buying Jian Yunong a delicious dessert.
Seeing Jian Yunong looking dumbfounded, Huo Jincheng smiled wider, "Do you really think I have no money left? I've been working for five years without anyone to spend it on. From now on, you just need to spend it; I'll take care of earning it."
"But right now... I always thought you were broke... Did you lie to me?" Jian Yunong thought Huo Jincheng had nothing left.
"Not exactly a lie. After buying this house, it might be less than twenty million. I have indeed lost a lot. I can't take the money with me, and I've given up my shares in the Huo Family, but my ability to make money is still there. You don't need to worry about anything."
Jian Yunong looked at Huo Jincheng's profile, "Huo Jincheng, where we live isn't important to me; what's important is... having you and Guai Guai at home."
"Okay, then leave the decision to me. You just need to be Teacher Jian; I'll be Teacher Jian's husband."
Jian Yunong laughed at him, "Mr. Huo, you're really sweet-talking."
Huo Jincheng chuckled lightly.
This wasn't just sweet talk.
In Jian Yunong's future life, Huo Jincheng fulfilled this promise through his actions. Jian Yunong rose from assistant to mentor and eventually secured a tenured position; she hardly had to worry about matters in life or her child's education.
A month later, Jian Yunong moved into a villa in the Upper East Side, the one with the best security system, larger than any she had seen before.
This was Huo Jincheng's way of showing his affection for her; spending money was the most straightforward approach.
When Jian Yunong's birthday arrived, Huo Jincheng gifted her a new Bentley. She had no idea about the car's price until her aunt visited her in America and praised her taste upon seeing the car. It was then that Jian Yunong realized how expensive it was.
On their sixth wedding anniversary, Huo Jincheng arranged a grand wedding ceremony for Jian Yunong at a castle.
Dressed in a wedding gown, Jian Yunong sat in a carriage, the sound of hooves echoing on the stone pavement damp with morning dew. In the dawn light, Huo Jincheng, wearing a vintage suit, smiled at her.
The smile on Huo Jincheng's face was more dazzling than the sunlight.
There weren't many guests at today's wedding; only Jian Yunong and Huo Jincheng's close friends and family attended. Apart from Grandma Huo and Le Yi, no one else from the Huo family came. However, Huo Jincheng did not invite anyone else.
On their tenth wedding anniversary, Jian Yunong received a call from Huo Jincheng during her break, asking her to take leave and return to Nancheng with him.
Jian Yunong sensed something was off in Huo Jincheng's tone and asked worriedly, "What happened?"
"My mom has late-stage cancer."
After nearly ten years, they were returning to Nancheng, but this time it was for Huo's mother's funeral.
Jian Yunong and Huo Jincheng caught a glimpse of Huo's mother for the last time; the once strong woman had become unrecognizably thin. Jian Yunong took a quick look and stepped out into the hallway to give Huo Jincheng and her own mother some space to communicate.
She didn't know what Huo's mother said to him; he remained unchanged, only silent for an entire night.
The Huo family urged him to return to the company, but Huo Jincheng hesitated.
At that moment, Jian Yunong discovered she was pregnant. Given her age, this unexpected pregnancy made Huo Jincheng resolute in his decision to refuse returning to the Huo family company. His reason was to take care of Jian Yunong during her second pregnancy.
Huo Company was left to Huo Liangchen to manage. After his divorce from Bai Ru, he met a woman who changed his entire life and mindset, making him much sunnier than before. Jian Yunong even sent a gift for the birth when she had a baby.
In January of the following year, Jian Yunong gave birth to a healthy girl.
Outside, heavy snow was falling, and Xu Yizhi braved the blizzard to visit. Seeing the little girl made him envious. He and Bai Ru had never been accepted by the Xu family. Xu Yizhi had worked hard to marry Bai Ru, but she didn’t seem to understand his struggles. Huo Jincheng could still see the scars behind Xu Yizhi's ears, clearly from being scratched by a woman. Yet, Xu Yizhi never showed any signs of distress; perhaps he felt that since he chose her, he had to endure it all.
Once the well-wishers left, the hospital room finally quieted down.
The obedient one hurried in to see her sister, giving all her chocolates to the little cutie who smiled like an angel.
"Thank you for your hard work, Mrs. Huo."
Huo Jincheng took Jian Yunong's hand and kissed it gently.
Jian Yunong smiled back at him, "Raising a child is not an easy task, Mr. Huo, you need to be prepared."
"I have a lifetime to love you and our child."
The snow fell quietly, and the hospital room felt warm like spring.
As Jian Yunong was about to drift off to sleep, she heard Huo Jincheng softly say, "I love you, Nong Nong."
"I love you too."
