The plane had a long journey and stopped in Amsterdam. Bai Yujing followed the crowd off the plane, and since it was not a direct flight, she needed to wait for her connecting flight here.
Bai Yujing looked at the airport map to see if there were any places to explore nearby. Since her layover in Amsterdam was quite long, she decided to take a stroll around. Upon examining the map closely, she discovered that there was a museum and a casino within the airport, so she decided to check out the museum.
However, when she arrived at the museum, she found that the main entrance was closed, which left her very disappointed.
"You must be on a layover here. It's currently closed, so the museum isn't open. If you have a Schengen visa, you can go out and explore Amsterdam, just make sure to return on time!" said a blonde girl who had been sitting next to Bai Yujing on the ten-hour flight. Everyone had mostly been resting during the flight, so Bai Yujing hadn't had a chance to talk to her yet.
Since her layover was only two hours, Bai Yujing thought about it and decided against it. She was unfamiliar with the area, and it would be troublesome if she missed her flight. "I'm heading to Edinburgh, so I won't be staying here long; I'll be leaving soon!"
"Just like I thought! You must be going to Edinburgh for the International Arts Festival in August! I'm Emma Bruce," Emma said as she pressed some buttons on a nearby vending machine and turned back to Bai Yujing. "Beer or cola?"
"No, no, I can get it myself!" Bai Yujing waved her hands repeatedly, but Emma had already pressed the button and retrieved two cans of beer from below. "Then let's have what I have!"
"Thank you!" Bai Yujing accepted it; since it was already bought, refusing would seem overly pretentious.
Bai Yujing and Emma found a spot in the airport to sit down. "Hello, Emma, I'm Bai Yujing. Are you also going to Edinburgh?"
Emma immediately replied, "I'm actually headed to London, but my father is in Edinburgh, so I'll stop by first before taking a train to London."
Emma looked quite young; she seemed like a college student, probably around eighteen or nineteen years old. "Why are you going to China? Are you traveling there?"
"I'm a member of the International Wildlife Conservation Organization. This time I'm going to China with other members of the organization. However, everyone else has returned already; I stayed a few extra days because I wanted to see some famous sights in China!" Emma said earnestly.
Emma was a charming girl with golden curly hair neatly styled. She wore a white lace long-sleeve shirt on top and blue skinny jeans on the bottom that showcased her perfect figure.
"Oh! The Endangered Species Conservation Organization? That's really cool! Can I ask what your purpose is for going to China? Is it to rescue and protect endangered wildlife there?" Bai Yujing didn't expect this young girl to be part of such an impactful organization; reflecting on herself, she realized she had nothing in her life worth bragging about.
When Emma talked about her work, she became animated. "This is just part of our work. This time we are mainly collecting data on some endangered species in China and their habitats and living environments."
"It feels so cool to save those animals on the brink of extinction all over the world. How should I put it? It feels like being a righteous Messenger; it's something I never even dared to imagine. This kind of life must be incredibly interesting!" Bai Yujing looked at Emma with great interest.
Emma felt a bit proud of Bai Yujing's enthusiasm and smiled as she said, "It's not as exaggerated as you say. However, due to human overexpansion and the impact of natural disasters, a large number of wildlife populations are continuously facing extinction. According to scientific data, species on Earth are going extinct at a rate of one species per hour. You have to understand that Earth is a complete ecological environment with a food chain; the extinction of any species can significantly destabilize the local food chain and ecosystem. Therefore, we should protect these endangered animals."
Emma continuously promoted their ideals to Bai Yujing, who also shared her own views and questions. The two talked happily together. Suddenly, Bai Yujing glanced at her phone and immediately stood up, saying, "Oh no, it's almost time."
Bai Yujing and Emma hurriedly found their boarding gate and thankfully did not miss their flight. Once they boarded the plane, they finally relaxed and exchanged smiles.
They were very close to Edinburgh now, and dawn was breaking. Looking down at Amsterdam from the sky, it resembled a chessboard, with various colored rectangular blocks forming a city. Bai Yujing took numerous photos with her camera from the plane; the scenery looked incredibly beautiful.
When they arrived in Edinburgh, it was just morning. Outside the plane was a layer of fluffy clouds and a bright blue sky, with golden sunlight shining down on the clouds. The light filtered through the gaps in the clouds onto the earth below, creating a sense of purification. The scene resembled something out of a classical Western oil painting, perhaps with a devout Christian kneeling on the ground below.
The flight from Amsterdam to Edinburgh only took two hours; however, it was frustrating that Bai Yujing encountered a long line upon arrival. It seemed that many people were coming to Edinburgh. Bai Yujing stood in line for nearly an hour before it was finally her turn.
Under the guidance of the Flight Attendant, Bai Yujing filled out an immigration card. An immigration officer checked her documents and asked about her plans for the next few days and when she would be leaving. After some back-and-forth, she was finally allowed to pass through.
Once out of customs, Bai Yujing looked up at the sky in Edinburgh and felt an urge to shout at the heavens. Without hesitation, she grabbed her camera and quickly took a few pictures. After taking a deep breath, she went to collect her luggage.
With her left hand dragging a suitcase, her right hand carrying a bag, and a large backpack on her back, Bai Yujing finally arrived fully equipped at her destination: Edinburgh. She rested for a moment since she had caught up on sleep during the flight; now she felt energetic. It was also early morning here, so there was no need to adjust to the time difference; both places aligned perfectly.
Now she needed to find her hotel since it was located right next to Edinburgh Castle. Bai Yujing just had to make her way towards that area.
Next to the airport, Bai Yujing saw a passageway with signs indicating transportation options. Following the passageway, she discovered a map available for free distribution. She took one and glanced at it to get an idea of her current location and how far she was from Edinburgh.
After exiting the passageway and following the signs, Bai Yujing successfully found where she could catch transportation. Feeling good and knowing it was still morning, she decided to take a moment to rest.
The airport offered free Wi-Fi, which had good speed after logging in. Bai Yujing decided to post on Weibo about her journey so far and share some interesting conversations with Mr. and Mrs. Marin about the history between Scotland and England as well as her encounter with Emma. She included several photos taken with her phone: drinks Emma treated her to and their selfies together.
Of course, she had asked for their permission before posting these details. Bai Yujing also spent some time enhancing the images and wrote about one or two thousand words detailing her experiences and feelings.
Unexpectedly, there were comments right after the post was made. Bai Yujing took a look and found that it was Wang Yi, who goes by the online name "I Don't Eat My Words." "Wow, before departure, he pretended to be serious, but as soon as he got on the plane, his true colors showed, running off with foreign girls."
A netizen named Old Yin Catches Little J commented, "I'm so envious, he's so carefree! I wish I could go out and explore too!"
Wumiao said, "Being able to let go and go wild, I support Gay Wind!"
Another netizen, Chaotic Times, remarked, "Wasn't Gay Wind supposed to be traveling with his best buddy? Why is he alone and chasing after girls? I no longer believe in true love!"
After seeing more and more comments appearing below, Bai Yujing was puzzled. Who was this Gay Wind? Looking at his followers, he realized that his fan count had skyrocketed from just a few dozen to over a thousand. How could this happen? He hadn't even officially started yet; where did all these people come from?
Bai Yujing scrolled back to his previous Weibo post and immediately discovered the reason.
Wumiao exclaimed, "Wow, flying double with my buddy to Edinburgh! Suddenly, I believe in true love!"
"That's so wicked—abandoning everything just to fly double with a buddy!"
Under a silly face picture originally posted with Wang Yi, there was a long list of comments filled with various wicked and inappropriate remarks, along with all sorts of speculations suggesting that the two couldn't stand societal exclusion and decided to fly to Edinburgh. Some even suggested they settle in France.
Many of Bai Yujing's classmates and friends expressed disbelief that Bai Yujing had come out. He thought to himself that he was clearly traveling alone; how did this rumor even start? Because Bai Yujing's online name contained the character for "wind," everyone began referring to him as Gay Wind.
It really is true that good news travels slowly while bad news spreads quickly. Bai Yujing tried to comment to clarify things but was immediately pushed down in the thread. With no other option and having rested enough by now, he stuffed his phone into his pocket and prepared to set off.
