"If my brother doesn't marry a wife in the future, then he will definitely die one day without anyone knowing."
"But he has never shown any compassion towards girls, nor is he interested in them; in fact, he seems somewhat annoyed by them. I even doubt his sexual orientation. So you don't have to worry about living with him."
Rao Jie listened awkwardly as Wu Xin criticized her brother. "So he's afraid your parents will pressure him into marriage, which is why you threatened him?"
Wu Xin smiled and said, "Don't be fooled by my brother's bad temper; he has no way of dealing with family. He may seem fierce on the outside, but he's not truly malicious. He just struggles with social interactions and dislikes sudden changes around him, which makes him irritable. But you'll get used to it. Just treat him like he's invisible when he doesn't talk, and live there confidently!"
After hanging up the video call, Rao Jie stared blankly at her phone. She knew Wu Xin meant well and had rationally analyzed the situation, thinking it was the most reasonable approach, but that was because the subject was her brother.
To Rao Jie, Wu Rong was an unfriendly stranger. Being alone in a room with a strange man made her feel uneasy; she was still a relatively conservative girl.
What should she do? She needed to think more about it.
Just as she was about to exit WeChat, she noticed the recent chats at the top.
Besides Wu Xin, there were Bao Ming and Jiang Chuchu.
In the quiet of the night, the only light came from her phone while thunder and rain began to echo outside, seemingly drowning out all other sounds and trapping Rao Jie in this small space.
Her gaze froze, and gradually her eyes turned red, even her vision started to distort. She huffed softly, exhaled sharply, then quickly turned her head and rubbed her face against the pillow.
When she turned back to look at her phone, her vision cleared a bit.
Her fingers trembled slightly but without hesitation, she opened Bao Ming's chat box, where her previous anxious messages to him still lingered. Rao Jie glanced at them again; her vision blurred once more as she clicked on his profile picture and then decisively tapped on the upper right corner to scroll down to the bottom.
Rao Jie hesitated between two options with her finger before finally selecting the one below:
[Delete]
[Delete] instead of [Add to Blacklist]
Adding someone to the blacklist seemed like another way of remembering that person; he didn't deserve any special treatment from her. She just wanted him to disappear from her world entirely.
Next, she opened Jiang Chuchu's chat and performed the same actions.
Then Rao Jie unhesitatingly began deleting all photos and information related to Bao Ming from her social media feed. It was only then that she realized almost all their pictures included Jiang Chuchu; there were very few of just the two of them alone together.
Holding her phone tightly, Rao Jie continued deleting without pause as if trying to erase every trace these two had left in her world until there was nothing left to find.
Her chest felt heavy, and her breathing became inexplicably rapid as countless voices seemed to swirl in her mind, all clamoring for attention until they surged up into her throat, nostrils, and eyes—every sense felt like it might explode from an unknown pressure.
Not only had she been deeply hurt by the betrayal of her boyfriend and friends, but also by the cold selfishness of her family that relentlessly tormented her vulnerability.
She had been out for so long now, yet not a single person had reached out to her.
Finally, she sobbed, trembling like a small beast as she cried out. Afraid of disturbing Wu Rong next door and not wanting to be heard, she bit down hard on her clothes, tears sliding into her mouth, a bitterness she had never tasted before.
