The bumpy sensation of the ride gradually faded away, the wheels came to a stop, and a gentle forward inertia stirred the sleeping girl, who had one eye covered by her hair.
"Miss, we've arrived."
"Mm... Oh, thank you, uncle."
Ma Yihan rubbed her sore eyes, stretched lazily, and instinctively pulled out her phone.
"Um, how much is it?"
"Oh, young lady, this isn't a taxi. We are the designated drivers from the base. We were assigned to pick you up by our superiors."
"Ah." Ma Yihan suddenly remembered that she had asked Liu Xuan if she could come to the base to see him, and Liu Xuan had requested permission from General Jiang.
"I'm sorry, I was a bit dazed from sleep." Ma Yihan squinted her eyes and smiled sweetly at the driver.
"It's fine. Hurry and get out to find your boyfriend, little beauty." The driver glanced at the guard station next to the base gate.
Ma Yihan opened the car door and picked up the dinner she had prepared for Liu Xuan. She walked toward the guard station.
"Oops!"
Ma Yihan suddenly remembered that she seemed to have forgotten to tell Liu Xuan not to eat dinner.
"Oh no, he won't eat it, will he..."
She looked down at the warm Braised Pork in her hands, which was Liu Xuan's favorite dish, feeling a bit worried.
"This won't taste good if it sits too long..."
As she reached the entrance of the guard station, a security guard stood up and opened the door.
"Ma Yihan?"
"Yes. I'm here to see a boy named Liu Xuan."
"My superior informed me; just show your ID, young lady."
"Ah!" Ma Yihan felt as if struck by lightning, "I didn't bring it... What should I do?"
"Uh." The guard glanced behind him.
Great. Ma Yihan bit her lip, only able to blame herself for not being prepared. "Why is it always me who messes things up?"
"No need for an ID; it's her."
A steady yet somewhat gentle male voice came from behind the door.
"Xuan!"
Ma Yihan immediately recognized the voice. If she had rabbit ears, they would definitely perk up right now.
Liu Xuan walked out from behind the door. His bangs covered his right eye, and he wore the gray-white gradient down jacket that Ma Yihan had sent him. His angular face looked particularly dashing, with sword-like eyebrows and starry eyes, a gentle smile on his lips; his handsomeness could not fully capture the aura he exuded at that moment.
"Wow—" Ma Yihan's eyes widened in surprise as she playfully raised an eyebrow at him.
The security guard, realizing he was blocking their way, quickly stepped aside and turned his back to them.
"You... have you eaten?" Ma Yihan leaned closer to Liu Xuan, lowering her head with a smile.
"Not yet. I knew you would take care of me, right?" Liu Xuan gently took the heavy food container from Ma Yihan's hands and placed it on the table.
"Um... are you doing well?" Ma Yihan felt a bit shy with someone else nearby.
The old Liu Xuan would have blushed by now, but the current Liu Xuan unexpectedly wrapped his arms around Ma Yihan, his hand sliding down her slim waist.
"Hey, you... go ahead and eat first; it will get cold if you wait too long," Ma Yihan struggled a bit but then relaxed and nestled into Liu Xuan's embrace. She buried her face in his chest and said, "I still like the smell on you, hehe."
Liu Xuan looked down and noticed she was wearing a dress. He asked, "Why are you wearing a dress in this cold weather? Aren't you cold?"
"Don't you like my legs?" Ma Yihan tilted her head back, lifting her leg clad in white stockings shyly while holding back a laugh.
"Uh, when did I say I liked you..." Liu Xuan quickly jumped away from Ma Yihan's intense allure and looked to the side.
"Hmph? Don't forget what you said."
"I like everything about you..."
"Right."
Ma Yihan burst into laughter, pinching Liu Xuan's cheek: "Still don’t know who always touches my legs when sleeping with me, hmm?"
The security guard discreetly glanced over.
Liu Xuan certainly caught that remark; he felt embarrassed and didn't know where to hide.
"You rascal!" Liu Xuan quickly covered Ma Yihan's mouth.
Ma Yihan turned her head to dodge while shouting, "I don't want to! I want to say it! I'm going to say it! Haha..."
Ma Yihan escaped from Liu Xuan's embrace but was forced against the wall by him. Liu Xuan closed in step by step until Ma Yihan felt her heels touch the wall and decided to lean against it.
"No place to run now?" Liu Xuan patted her head, "I'll let you off this time, hmph."
Unexpectedly, Ma Yihan, who had been facing away, suddenly reached out her arms to wrap around Liu Xuan's neck and pulled him close; Liu Xuan instinctively lowered his head to align his lips perfectly with Ma Yihan's slightly parted red lips.
The sound of kissing made the security guard's heart flutter. He couldn't help but glance over a few more times, but suddenly, he shook his head vigorously and continued to look at the documents in his hands.
"Well... alright." Ma Yihan pushed Liu Xuan away and said, "You're so annoying."
Liu Xuan wiped his mouth and said, "Do you think I've changed a lot?"
"Yeah," Ma Yihan replied. "It's been almost three years, Liu Xuan. You've gone from being a child to a great hero. If I were your mother... she would be proud of you."
The words slipped out of Ma Yihan's mouth before she could stop herself—how could she forget? Liu Xuan's mother had died for him.
But Liu Xuan seemed unaffected, saying, "Of course, I won't let my loved ones down, including you."
Ma Yihan nodded, pulling up his sleeve and said, "Hurry up and eat! This is made by me; if it gets cold, it won't taste good. You better eat it!"
"Yes, yes, my lady."
"Eat slowly." Ma Yihan watched him devour the food and felt a warm current in her heart. She actually felt very sorry for Liu Xuan—he had no immediate family left and no one to accompany him. She was the only one who could take care of him, yet he still risked his life carrying out various dangerous missions.
Ma Yihan herself was on edge every day, especially after hearing that Liu Xuan had gone on a mission again a few days ago. She couldn't sleep at night, sometimes even tearing up as she thought about it—what if one day she woke up and lost Liu Xuan forever? No one could say for sure.
Liu Xuan was focused on eating while Ma Yihan gently stroked his back, like a weary mother watching her son return from working hard outside.
"Just eat your food; you can listen to me chat," Ma Yihan said. "I should have my scholarship secured this semester. Also, I used the money I earned from my part-time job during the last holiday to help fix my dad's teeth. That guy just doesn't care about hygiene and ended up needing root canal surgery, which cost me thousands. It broke my heart! But then again, money is meant to be spent."
Liu Xuan didn't even look at her, lost in the paradise of Braised Pork.
Ma Yihan pouted and said, "Oh right, someone confessed to me before."
"Huh?!" Liu Xuan spat out a piece of fat and stared wide-eyed at Ma Yihan.
Ma Yihan laughed as she pulled out a napkin to wipe his mouth. Seeing him still staring with wide eyes, she couldn't hold back any longer and burst into laughter: "What’s wrong? Afraid I might cheat on you? You're my husband; I wouldn't dare! Hehe."
"And that guy's reason for confessing was particularly... interesting."
"Oh really? What did he say?" Liu Xuan relaxed a bit.
"He said he would trade his entire life in this chaotic world just for me to smile back at him. Hahaha."
"How do you remember that so clearly?" Liu Xuan stared at Ma Yihan with a blank expression.
"Uh, not really... some of it I made up. Come on~ why are you getting jealous?" Ma Yihan said.
"In this chaotic world..." Liu Xuan pondered for a moment.
"Yeah, it looks peaceful now, but there are really undercurrents flowing beneath. Recently, there have been graves being dug up; I just can't understand what kind of pervert likes dead people so much?" Ma Yihan shrugged and pouted slightly.
"Graves... hmm..." A sudden spark of realization flashed through Liu Xuan's mind.
"What's wrong?" Ma Yihan asked.
"Do you know if there have been any graves dug up recently?"
"Recently, the news reported about it in Tongcun," Ma Yihan said.
"Ah?!" Liu Xuan exclaimed, "Tongcun in City S?"
"Yeah." Ma Yihan suddenly realized, "Then the next one..."
"Shengfeng Village!"
The two pointed at each other simultaneously.
Tongcun and Shengfeng Village are relatively close villages, and both have public cemeteries. Shengfeng Village is Liu Xuan's hometown.
By the way, is your current mission to catch this grave-digging pervert? Ma Yihan asked.
Liu Xuan pulled Ma Yihan into her arms and gently stroked the hair by Ma Yihan's ear. Ma Yihan wrapped her leg, covered in white silk, around Liu Xuan's leg but noticed that Liu Xuan did not react. Ma Yihan pouted and lifted her head to follow Liu Xuan's gaze towards the moon, which Liu Xuan was staring at in silence.
Ma Yihan looked at Liu Xuan's profile, her eyes shimmering like pearls in the waves. The two nestled by the window, unmoving, as if time stood still.
"Stand straight!"
All the Soulless Zombies were making a ruckus, creating chaos. Virgil was trying to count the first few dozen zombies in front but lost track when several zombies suddenly started moving around, making it impossible for her to keep count.
Virgil could no longer hold back; her anger felt like it was burning her face. She slowly floated up, summoning a Chaos Sphere with both hands, looking down at the hundreds of mindless corpses below.
"I said, stand straight!"
With a loud bang, the Chaos Sphere thrown by Virgil exploded among them, its powerful force instantly reducing dozens of zombies to ashes without a trace left behind.
Virgil's eyes were filled with chaos, and her veins shimmered with a grayish-white light. She slowly descended from above the zombies, shaking her head and sighing.
This explosion wasted all her efforts to revive the Soulless Zombies in the graveyard. After all, the Soulless Zombies listened to Virgil; they just acted a bit hyperactive and completely annoyed her.
These zombies were somewhat sensible; seeing their boss lose her temper, none dared to move now.
"Forget it; I can't be bothered to waste Time on you bunch of trash. Whatever there is will have to do," Virgil said as she lowered her hands and looked towards the distant glimmering lights of City S.
"That's enough."
