I cleaned the stone slab and wanted to study the symbols on it carefully.
But just then, the construction site suddenly became noisy.
I looked up and saw Old Zhao striding towards me with several workers, looking aggressive.
" Xiao Zhang, I heard you found a stone slab?"
Old Zhao's tone sounded somewhat unfriendly.
"Yeah, what's wrong?"
I was a bit puzzled; Old Zhao's reaction seemed a bit too intense.
"Destroy it!"
With a wave of his hand, several workers rushed forward, trying to snatch the slab from my hands.
"Wait!"
I quickly protected the slab and confronted Old Zhao and his crew.
"Old Zhao, what do you mean by this?"
Old Zhao stared at me coldly, a hint of malice flashing in his eyes.
"Mind your own business; this is not good for you."
I felt anger; these people clearly knew something but were continuously obstructing my investigation into the truth.
Just as we were at a standstill, a sudden scream of terror erupted from the construction site.
"Ghost! There's a ghost!"
I turned around to see a worker running towards us from the corner of the site, his face filled with fear.
"What happened?"
Old Zhao shouted sternly.
The worker knelt on the ground, pointing at a dark shadow in the corner and said, "There... there is a ghost..."
I looked in the direction he was pointing and saw that shadow slowly writhing, as if it had a life of its own.
A chill rose from my feet and shot straight to the top of my head.
The power of the Vengeful Spirit was finally beginning to manifest!
The next day, I went to the city library to research the history of the construction site, hoping to find some clues.
Heaven rewards those who are diligent; I finally discovered a yellowed blueprint among a pile of old documents, which marked the location of an ancient tomb, seemingly right beneath the construction site!
This discovery excited me, but it also caught the attention of Old Zhao.
Just as I was about to study the drawing in detail, Old Zhao suddenly appeared in front of me.
" Xiao Zhang, let's talk."
Old Zhao's expression was not good, and there was a hint of urgency in his tone.
"What do you want to talk about?"
I pretended to be unaware, but inside I was guessing his intentions.
"Stop pretending. I know you found that drawing."
Old Zhao sighed, and his tone became heavy.
"So what?"
I stared unyieldingly into Old Zhao's eyes, trying to discern something from his expression.
Old Zhao was silent for a moment before slowly saying, " Xiao Zhang, do you know what would happen if what’s beneath the construction site were to be released?"
I shook my head, but I had a vague sense of foreboding in my heart.
"The things in there could destroy the entire construction site, even the whole city!"
Old Zhao's voice trembled, clearly not joking.
"How do you know?"
I looked at Old Zhao warily, sensing that he seemed to be hiding something.
Old Zhao took a deep breath and slowly began, "Actually, I was one of the earliest workers on this construction site. I know the history of the site and the legend of that ancient tomb."
"Then why have you been stopping me from investigating?"
There was a hint of anger in my tone, feeling as if Old Zhao was treating me like a fool.
"Because I don't want this place to turn into a wasteland!"
Old Zhao said excitedly, "Think about it. If the site is destroyed, what will happen to those workers? Most of them are from out of town; they have no home or family here and can only rely on this construction site for their livelihood! If this place is ruined, what will they do?"
