As she spoke, she walked out.
I bit my lip and got up to follow her.
She went to the neighbor's house and knocked on the door.
The neighbor opened the door, and upon seeing my grandmother, smiled broadly, "Oh, you're here."
My grandmother glanced at me before turning and walking inside.
I approached the doorway and listened to their conversation.
They were speaking in our local dialect, which I couldn't understand.
But I knew they were definitely talking about me.
I caught a glimpse of the neighbor looking towards the door, casting a strange glance in my direction.
That look was like that of someone eyeing a lamb ready for slaughter.
At night, the heavy iron gate of the yard was locked tight.
Chen Feng hadn't returned.
I lay in bed, tossing and turning, unable to sleep.
In a daze, I opened my eyes and saw a pale face pressed against the window, staring directly at me.
"Ah!"
I screamed and sat up in bed.
It was my grandmother.
She was like a ghost, pressed against the window, staring intently at me.
Seeing that I was awake, she tugged at the corners of her mouth and said, "Nana, you’re not sleeping well. Let me cover you with a blanket."
"You can go back to sleep," she added before turning to leave.
I gasped for breath.
My forehead was covered in cold sweat.
What on earth does she want to do?
Has she discovered something?
I dared not sleep again and stayed awake until dawn.
In the morning, my mother-in-law brought me a bowl of Black-Boned Chicken Soup.
Noticing her pale complexion, I asked, "Mother, what's wrong?"
She shook her head, "It's nothing, just a bit of insomnia."
That day, I gave my mother-in-law the Calming Incense I had brought from home.
I said, "Mother, this is Calming Incense I specially brought from my hometown. It works really well; I light it every night."
My mother-in-law paused for a moment and then smiled, "That's wonderful."
In the evening, I would help her light the incense.
Each time, she would fall into a deep sleep.
The neighbor lady still often came over to chat with my mother-in-law.
They would speak in our local dialect.
I still couldn't understand.
But I could sense that they were plotting something.
"Nana, did you hear any strange sounds last night?"
At the dining table, my mother-in-law suddenly asked me.
I was taken aback and replied, "No, why?"
"Oh, it's nothing," she smiled. "I just didn't sleep well last night."
She lowered her head, looking somewhat flustered.
I frowned.
What is she panicking about?
She said again, "I've been sleeping poorly these days and having nightmares."
I replied casually, "Maybe you've been sleeping too much during the day?"
"Maybe," she said.
Grandma stopped talking and lowered her head to eat.
That night, Grandma didn't crouch by the window like a ghost to spy on me anymore.
The yard was very quiet.
But in the middle of the night, I suddenly heard Grandma's scream.
"Ah!"
I was startled and sat up in bed.
There was a rustling sound in the yard.
It sounded like something had fallen to the ground.
Grandma screamed again.
I quickly put on my clothes, opened the door, and went outside.
"Grandma, what's wrong?"
Grandma stood in the yard, trembling, "Just now... something fell down..."
